After a disappointing debut year (2006,) I'd argue that the Sprungs have just as good, if not better, track record of producing solid houses vs other locations at the event. Based on general consensus:

Sprung Hits
The Thing (17)
The Hallow (18)
Dead Exposure (18)
Catacombs (20)
Havoc (20)
The In-Between (21)
Nevermore (21)
Dollhouse of the Damned (24)
Halloween (24)
Insidious (25)
Tomb of the Ancients (26)
Scarecrow (27)
Dead Exposure (28)
Slaughter Sinema (28)
Wicked Growth (30)

Sprung 'Decents'
Psycho Path (16)
Jack's Funhouse (17)
Chucky (19)
La Llorona (23)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (26)
Hive (27)
Nightingales (29)
Puppet Theatre (30)
Descendants of Destruction (31)
Bugs (31)

Sprung Misses
The People Under the Stairs (16)
The Spawning (19)
Alice Cooper (22)
Penn & Teller (22)
Afterlife (23)
The Purge (25)
Depths of Fear (29)

Outside of a few of these (Loved Depths Of Fear, TCM (26), Hive, Puppet Theatre) I mostly agree with this list. The tents have housed some incredible houses.

@thelondonwerecat - I can't quote your post on an edit, but KidZone closes in January so I'm thinking construction will be in full swing by next September! I think they could keep one entrance in that area and just use the ET queue, but the other portal would either be in Springfield or near La Bamba.

I'd assume they don't want to remove a zone. Imagine how pissed the general public/most of the fandom would be. It'd be a very "Disney" move imo

And as far as FNAF, a similar style to Dead Exposure would work really well I think. They could use deep hallways similar to what they use for bungee scares, just with animatronics at the end of the hallway staring. False jump scares such as a phone ringing or an arcade game kicking on could really build tension as well. Could be a good way to get around lack of scare actors!

thank you for letting me know that kidzone closes in January. I don’t think that Springfield would work due to the structure of backstage over there. I think we are more likely to see La Bamba, Bugs Queue and Descendants queue over Springfield. I also think that Fast Food would interfere with the queue.

I’m not quite sure what you mean by that being a very Disney move? They’ve always experimented with scare zones and number of them throughout the event’s history and outside of park wide scare zones, I don’t usually hear complaints. Certainly none when it moved from 6 zones to 5.

Very very fair point, and I must admit of not knowing anything about country at all. That's a good point, and I think some zones or houses 8n the past might have had some country songs if I remember correctly.

I guess no one wouldn’t mention this cause of how universally hated the genre is now since the 80’s with its Middle America aesthetics as one of the factors despite its massive commercial success, but I’m thinking its golden era from the 50’s through 70’s.

My first HHN was 26 so I wasn't aware that they ever had 6 and dropped to 5, lol.

Yeah I wasn't sure how the backstage area was structured behind Springfield. Looking at Google Maps I just said "hey, there's a path that could be walked" and that was pretty much the end of that research lol

Hehe, that’s understandable. Scare zones have certainly been up and down in terms of number. My first year was 16 and they had 4 scare zones. 18-21 had 6, I believe 12 and 13 had 6 as well (only if you counted Boo-Ville anyway). Then they did park wide scare zones for 22-23 before going back to 4 and since 25, they’ve had 5 and stuck with it.

Honestly I think 5 is a good middle ground and why they’ve stuck with it, but I can’t help but feel if they moved some of the food booths, they could maybe plop a scare zone in between Transformers and New York. Not sure how that area would do in terms of crowds or what the logistics would be putting a zone there would entail (you have the Transformers queue there and I believe a bar entrance is there as well). I don’t know of to many other places to put a zone other than where KKFOS was at 28. They would have to remove the lagoon show to do so and while I wouldn’t mind if they did that, many wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice it that I know of.

2007 was a park wide scare zone. It did have sections to it with some definitely being better than others. Troupe Macabre in Central Park comes to mind as the best that year.

Would they need to get rid of the Lagoon show if they moved the zone down further right next to Transformers on South st?

If the logistics of Nightmare Fuel letting out weren't a nightmare, I think World Expo could be an interesting area for a small zone.

Sunset Blvd could be a spot, but like someone else mentioned, it would depend on where the Minions location would dump out.

I think only like 3 parts of the park had stuff in 2097,( or 4)?
But looking at the wiki, 2006 definitely says to only have had 3 zones lol.

2006 had 4 but I believe Horror Comes Home was not considered official. I remember it being named as a scare zone on the site though back in the day. And it was a scare zone. It had scare actors.

In 06, In they used part of the beginning of the Back To The Future queue as a house queue. Not sure how they could handle that by splitting in half for both attractions, even the queue lines for the rides during HHN are longer in recent years.

Maybe by the time the contract expires with the Simpsons deal, it could happen when it gets a retheme for some other IP.

I’d certainly be interested to know what areas are viable for scare zones outside what they already use. And even those (Central Park and San Francisco) are barely able to handle the crowds.

I think it'd be a good idea for them to either move/expand the San Fran area further down toward F&F.

New (or enhanced) Scare Zone location ideas:
  • Expand San Francisco up to F&F, however they need to keep the area in front of Richter's and restrooms clear for easy access, as well as remove the food truck that they insist on using every time that just clogs the entire area
  • (Not happening for obvious reasons) But they could have attempted to move back the two parade house entrances back into Kidzone and put a scare zone by Fievel/Barney
  • The ally between Transformers/new minions could work (depends if they need this for fire lane access)
  • Doing the death eaters at Diagon would benefit crowds as well (Diagon was actually busy this year, but not regular day busy)
Not many other realistic options to choose from.

Yeah I remember a scare zone in Kidzone I believe at 18. Wouldn’t work with the crowds nowadays but neither does San Francisco and Central Park.

I think once minions is finished, we’ll get houses exiting there again and that ally May get too many people pouring in there.

I still can’t help but wonder about that ally on the other side of Transformers. The one between Transformers and New York. Again don’t know the feasibility of it.

At this point best we can hope for is maybe scare zone extension as you and others have suggested. Extend San Francisco, and I believe Central Park a bit out towards Mel’s.

I think extending the current zones beyond their current limits is the best option at the moment. Expand Central Park into the area in front of Mels (just like the church from a few years ago), move the PC zone up into the area up to Today Cafe/Studio Sweets, move New York into the side streets as well, etc.

They also need to stop doing mini-shows/stages in San Fran, there were a lot of bottlenecks caused by it and the area is too small/critical for it.

Exactly. I don’t understand the reasoning behind having shows in San Fran. Such a bad idea.

I remember when scare zones use to extend to the side streets in NY. My favorite scare zone Psychoscareapy: Unleashed did it. So did Survive or Die and The Purge. No idea why they stopped doing that. I feel the others need to be extended more so than NY overall though for sure.

Who says no to CP and Hollywood combining into one huge zone? /s

It's a shame that the Death Eaters in Diagon Alley will likely never happen - it would be a nice draw and definitely would help spread crowds.
