I'm not sure what a Chinese or Indian company investing in Paramount has to do with a 3rd Universal park.

Reliance is partnered with Universal through Amblin Partners for production and distribution which would give them access to titles and IPs they currently don't have access to. In a sense going back to the 70s,80s, and 90s where multiple major studios would invest in films together and share rights and profits and Universal has a 50 film deal with China's Perfect world film who is they buy in will also give them an in as well as Wanda film.

This also leans itself to a complete sell of Paramount pictures which Comcast probably will buy into mainly as it lacks a lot of children based IPs which Paramount owns.

That's not exactly true. Smith and Torn show up in the queue video, and Fraiser does as well in the Mummy.

I guess I just do not see proof that it's "very popular" in the slightest. Maybe it's just my circles, but even in my geeky circles Star Trek holds very little sway.

It's true about the queue videos, however I was focusing more on the on ride experience. The queue video impact is far less than on ride experience. As Gringotts as showed us, there are ways of enhancing the queue experience without resorting to queue videos featuring main actors as set up (doesn't Gringotts queue have only one instance of the Big three showing up, and in only shadow form at that? Outside of the moving Daily Prophet images, which were mostly taken directly from the movies). That same approach could be taken with just about any future attraction Universal plans on building.

And I can understand not seeing Star Trek's influence if its not part of your circle. It isn't in my circle either. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Nintendo, comics and horror films are the driving geekdoms in my group of friends. However, I am a massive convention junky. I travel all over the country, from SDCC to NYCC and countless other inbetween every year. The influence of Star Trek is enormous at every one, with the Star Trek actors having among the longest lines for autographs. Just last year I attended a convention where Marina Sirtis from Star Trek NG (I think?) was in attendance. Her line for autographs was the longest, at almost a 2 hour wait at one point, with people of all ages waiting. And that was against other massive geekdom favorites like Stephen Amell, and some others I can't for the life of me remember. I myself swung by Robert Englund's table, talked to him for about ten minutes and was in and out of the autograph area in about 15 minutes lol.

I thought the point of all of this was about pay for the actors and how much involvement they had? Being in a queue video is probably no less effort than being part of the ride in some form or another.

I think queue videos can ground the ride in the reality of the parks. I think having John Hammond talk to us before getting on JP:RA adds a great deal to the ride.

Again, I would beg to differ. How long and how much effort do you think it took to record those queue videos? Or even the short end of ride clips on MIB and The Mummy?

And then how much effort and time do you think went into the filming of the actors portions on attractions like Gringotts of Forbidden Journey? It was certainly a LOT more due to the special effect nature of it all and I'm sure the cost to pay the actors involved was also much more. When involving the more prevalent actors from the series, that cost most certainly rose even more.

There's a lot of factors involved with the cost and effort. The John Hammond one would require the actor to fly out to the location (Probably the park) and get back in character when they're not shooting a film. Fair enough HP is more impressive, but there's no extra effort for the actor as most of the technical stuff is done after. They just have to act like they normally would. Also, if I remember correctly, most of the scenes for Gringotts were done years before the ride was finished.

Edit: I've got my dates wrong. I thought the scenes for Gringotts were shot at the same time as Deathly Hallows Pt 2.

There was a time in the distant past when the Star Trek "Trekkies" far outnumbered any group, including Star Wars, at the Comics & Fantasy shows. Since the late 80's though, that's been reversed in favor of Star Wars. But Star Trek is still a strong lure in those circles at least.

You may have a point for that one instance involving the John Hammond character, but that was an anomaly when compared to the simple close up, characters seated head shots from Will Smith and Fraiser that could have been easily filmed anywhere in a mater of an hour (though let me point out I don't remember ANYTHING about Will Smith in the MIB queue video, just the end of ride video, so more could have been involved there). In the case of the filming for Gringotts and Forbidden Journey, that took WAY more time, involved on set special effects and no small amount of stunt work even before the post production effects are added.

In fact, this is making me want to go back and listen to a podcast from last year where the director of the ride recounted the filming of the queue video. If I remember correctly, they approached the actor and filmed when he was available in town. Also learned the fun fact that Speilberg has a cameo in the queue video after walking onto the set interested in how the queue video shoot was going.

Which I have mentioned. Star Trek is not as big as Star Wars or other IP's anymore. That doesn't discount it as a popular IP in its own right. It's like the discussions that were taking place after Star Wars Land was announced concerning Harry Potter.

Stitch: I was agreeing with your post concerning Star Trek. i had added a sentence at the end in a quick edit, probably between when you looked at it. Just adding a little history trivia from personal experience.

As a very light-casual fan of Star Trek (mostly due to the newer movies) - Am I right on with saying other than maybe their uniforms, maybe Starfleet type apparel, the tribbles, and phasers; there really isn't much for merch opportunities?

I'v yet to ride Gringotts and I've been avoiding details to not spoilt anything for myself so I really shouldn't be commenting on it. I'm just working from experience of the rides I have been on.

Not sure if that's true. If you've ever seen the Trekkies at conventions, they kind of dress up like a who's who of the Universe. And when they had the Star Trek Experience in Vegas they had tons of merchandise for sale.

Eh, there's way more than Avatar, and that's getting a whole 11-acre land.

... Spock ears??? LOL

In all seriousness, in terms of merchandising I don't think we would need more than what you stated along with typical themed t-shirts and such we see from other attractions. I personally see Star Trek as a stand alone attraction and not in need of a fully themed area akin to Harry Potter, so I wouldn't think the immersive merch we see with Harry Potter would be needed.

Off topic a bit, but I found that Gringott's is one of those attractions that get better the more times you ride it, cause so much happens so fast that you miss a lot. So when you ride it, give it time. Like a good wine. I'd say my fifth run was a 100% better than the first. Plus different seats have completely different experiences. But I won't say anything else as a Spoiler.

I've been thinking about the merchandise at Universal and Disney recently and I probably buy about 10x more at Disney than I do at Universal yet I prefer Universal. I think the main reason is that Disney is so much more iconic. I'd buy A storm trooper helmet piggy bank and or a Mickey oven glove but Universal doesn't have anything like that. The Christmas store in IOA is just a huge disappointment.

Those are conventions though. The hardcore fans. I'm speaking in terms of merch that the GP would be more inclined to purchase.

I wasn't trying to justify if it needed a land or not, just discussing what merch opportunities are there.

That's why I mentioned the Star Trek Experience. That was basically general public and they had a huge amount of merchandise. Between all of the shows & movies they touched on a lot of themes and areas. They also had a very large bar/restaurant with an amazing number of themed drinks and food. And it was quite large. The Cantina pictures from Star Wars Land on the Disney 60th show are almost copycat. That existed until about ten years ago, so it wasn't too far in the past.

I'm not a HP fan in the slightest, my wife has tried and tried. I've made her a deal if she watches all of Star Wars, I will watch Harry Potter so I should be up to date before I ride. You're one of the people who convinced me to stay at Cabana Bay, so that early entry to HP will be you're doing and I'm grateful.

I understand that, but I think you missed my point. This whole issue arose from payment of actors to appear in the ride. My comments were meant to convey that it is possible to create an attraction and a story for an attraction with minimal to no use of the main actors.

I totally missed that point, I apologize and I was wrong.
