Good job cutting out the rest of my explanation, as it allows you to try shifting the goalposts of your stance. But the argument stands, as the “artist” presenting a POV in reality TV is the production team (camera crew, producers, editors, directors) the same way it is in any television show.

I’ll reiterate - Reality television is the equivalent of surreal photography.

I wasn’t in any way trying to “shift the goalposts” or misrepresent you. My understanding was that you were attributing the artistic intervention to the offscreen individuals - the crew - while what was being filmed was “a moment of the real world,” whether or not the external artists attempted to “distort” it. I think the assumption that “a moment of the real world” was involved at all is very questionable, and the fact that the entire production works to make the nature of the “real world” unknowable or even irrelevant - there is no distinction between real and performance - is the issue. It gets back to the kayfabe Jake brought up. It’s not “artists” distorting “reality,” it’s the entire concept of “reality” being destabilized.

While that may apply to more traditional reality TV, the wrestlers are a part of the art. They are the actors who put on the show while the crew makes it a spectacle.

Literally anything made with intention to illicit a response from and intended audience should be considered art.

Is Cirque Du Soleil art?

Are dozens of artisans creating a live 2hr show featuring multimedia and superhuman feats of athletics art?

All I'll say here - watch Shawn Michaels VS Ric Flair at Wrestlemania 24 and tell me wrestling isn't performance art.

Or - watch CM Punk's Pipe Bomb, and the entire Punk/Cena Angle for Money in the Bank 2011.

Shawn Michaels VS Undertaker at Wrestlemania 25 and 26.

If you're not into wrestling, that's fine. But saying it isn't art is a bit over the top (rope)

And by the way - even without the theatrics and story, sports can be art. You ever see a beautifully executed trick play in football?

Well, the academic definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.

I like Halloween, can we talk about how cool jack-o-lanterns are again?

I just hope there’s tons of pumpkins somewhere this year.

As much as I would love to see a comedy show return, I just don’t know that we are in the day and age of comedy anymore. I don’t know how you can make a comedy show without offending someone.

Yeah, I wish people would stop being offended by EVERYTHING they don't agree with. You can dislike something without throwing a hissy fit about it

Who would have guessed that after a 3 page discussion on the art of the WWE that it would still be my least anticipated.

I think we'll definitely see the pumpkins in the trees in Central Park again this year!

I agree with this. Terrifier is unquestionably art. “Art” is not a judgement of quality - it can be good or bad, elevating or destructive. And Horror, despite periodic moral panics, has elevated and illuminated more then destroyed.

Perhaps the exact definition of “art” is academic, but I’ll return to a question I asked earlier (not just to Jake, but to everyone) - is reality TV art? What is the boundary of what cannot be art (not that this will be clear cut)?

Sorry, i'm late. Art students are usually outside smoking while everyone is inside talking.
I'm sure i probably don't need to cite this example to most, as it is pretty well known to fans of the 20th century avant garde movement, but for those who may not know, here's a bit of art history from the Captain!
1753456495556.png
In 1917 Marcel Duchamp posed this exact question to the Society of Independent Artists at the Grand Central Palace in New York. Duchamp got up there with a literal porcelain urinal that was signed R. MUTT in reference to MOTT WORKS, the manufacturer of the commode, and a cartoon strip that Duchamp was a fan of. He did not alter the urinal in any way, he simply signed the side of it very shoddily with black acrylic paint.

The exact quote of his submission that shocked and beguiled onlookers for years, to the point that he had several more commissioned in the 60's, was thus:
"Everyday objects (can be) raised to the dignity of a work of art by the artist's act of choice."

Therefore, i feel a bit like Syndrome from Incredibles when i say "If everything can be art: nothing is." But that's also kinda the point.
