‘Backrooms’ Box Office: 5 Takeaways After Kane Parsons’ Horror Hit Obliterated Opening Weekend Expectations

Why "Backrooms," a horror film from director Kane Parsons, defied box office expectations.
variety.com variety.com

Backrooms and Obsession killed it last weekend

So yeah, people don't mind new IPs when you make good movies that are interesting to audiences.

Over all really liked Backrooms, definitely went in expecting a vibes movie and was not disappointed. They captured the feeling of liminal spaces perfectly, and kept the dread and unease building, all of that punctuated by some wonderful performances.

I didn't expect to get a great explanation of things given that has never been the point of the meme, and was certainly not surprised when nothing was really offered, but with a sequel being hinted at, I have a theory:

The main explanation Clark offers for things that seem to appear in the world of the Backrooms is that they are like memories, imperfect, constructed out of almost photocopied instructions. You can get close to something, but never quite all the way there. The dog metaphor is used a couple times, and does a good job of cementing this as the thesis behind the structure and substance of what appears in the Backrooms themselves.

To continue to back this up visually, we have the descending shot from Mary's childhood home as the structure of the room seems to warp and degrade, almost as if you were to show the original image to someone briefly, have them describe the room to someone else, have them recreate it, and so on down the line.

Additionally, you have specific memory markers from Clark that seem to have been introduced into the world, but perhaps not originally when he appeared there. You don't really get much specific to Clark's memories (beyond generic furniture) until after he is knocked unconscious by an unseen force and then found several months (?) later by Mary.

Likewise, Mary's memories don't seem to manifest in the world either until after she herself is captured by Async (the degraded storefronts, her own doppel, etc)

My theory here is that Async's MRI machines have something to do with the "why" of how things came into existence in the world of the Backrooms. Within the MRI is an echo, a photocopy almost of the brain's makeup and pathways at the time it is taken. No real soul behind it, just the pure data. There is a potential that this data has effectively been accidentally copied into existence. Imperfect, but yet eerily familiar. The theory would be Clark was captured by Async, scanned, and let back loose in the Backrooms, as it is only after his capture we see Captain Clark, his store replica, etc.

This would also explain why so many shared collective images seem to be there, as it is an amalgamation of many individual memories all manifesting together. Obviously there is no real specific explanation, and I am just ultimately trying to piece together a "why" when that's kind of the point, not to know, but still

I haven't done much research into the Backrooms lore any deeper than the first couple YouTube videos and the original copypasta, so perhaps this theory is nothing new, but still fun to play around with!

Backrooms was fantastic. Dreadful, tense-filled slow burn that culminates in a delightfully horrific finale (albeit with a VERY sudden character shift). You might not like a twist about the mythos if you more prefer the quiet, liminal canon over Kane's more psychological take.

Also, this needs to be a house at HHN next year.

for hhn, I wonder how a house would work since the backrooms are so well lit and bright. they have so much light. ( universal could make the house dark but it would kind of defeat the purpose)

it's kind of insane that the backrooms was born out of a very random anonymous photo posted on 4chan of all places,

I wonder what the original poster is thinking right now. they gave birth not only to a beloved paranormal meme, but now a multi million dollar movie (soon to be a franchise)

Backrooms has astonishingly superb production and set design, a wonderfully foreboding and thick atmosphere, fantastic acting, and a few set pieces that really get the heart pumping and the terror rushing to your brain. That said, I was slightly disappointed by the narrative and it hits you over the head with its thematic messaging to the point where it feels slightly forced. These areas are where I think Kane Parson's age and newness to the film medium show the most. There were also a few parts where it dragged just slightly too slowly for me and the basic shot composition in real world scenes feels dull but in a way I think that does amplify the strangeness of the Backrooms.

3.5 / 5 for me, it might shockingly be in a fight to make my Top 10 for the year!

I just watched Frozen (no not that one), thought it was pretty solid. The first half is quite heart-pounding and the second half is much more character dev focused that makes you root for them imo, though maybe it should've been reversed?

(I guess I'm on a survival horror binge--it was still nowhere near as horrifying and dread-inducing as Open Water, though, which now that I've had time to sit on it is easily in my top five scariest movies ever.)

If this moves forward (which I am skeptical of), then no. It would not be a similar situation.

Just thought about something funny with Obsession that I hope they (At least in passing) address in the upcoming spin off movie:

Ian literally created a billion dollars out of thin air. That guy just screwed the US economy. Everything is going to be more expensive now that there is literally a billion dollars more in the US currency. Although Bear wasn't a good guy, the real villain is Ian. Not only did he ruin Bear's chance at "bringing back" Niki, but he just screwed over the US economy and everyone's ability to pay the bills. Nice going Ian.

I like your joke about the billion but Bear was never going to save Nikki, he proved time and time again he only cared about himself even up to the final moments when he tried barfing up the pills. That group though was a mess from Sarah not even doing the bare minimum in checking on Nikki after she stabbed herself in front of everyone, to Ian egging Bear on when he knew he already had a thing going on with Nikki. That entire movie was really about toxic relationships.

I do think your point is something that he wouldn’t overlook though.

Fun little tidbit in this article: the next Evil Dead movie (after Burn) will take place in 1972! (And also will apparently have some "coming-of-age sexual hijincks," which is unexpected)

Knowing Tapert, I suspect he's building hype more than anything else (though I also wouldn't be surprised if sexual stuff gives the MPA more pause than the gore stuff).

The MPAA slapped ARMY OF DARKNESS (initially) with an NC-17 rating -- despite easily being PG-13 worthy -- as retaliation for Raimi and co. not submitting EVIL DEAD 2 for a rating at all. That got negotiated down to an R (still a fairly absurd rating for the actual content of ARMY OF DARKNESS), but I can't imagine WRATH will end up being a tougher battle with more at stake (had ARMY's NC-17 rating remained, it would have basically terminated its wide release).
