My feeling too. Let’s be honest here, Uni’s been doing this with WWoHP and SNW’s power up bands. Disney’s actually late to the game.

Here's the deal though: both of those are not at the possible expense of other guests' experiences on an attraction. If it's additive to an already fun attraction, it won't matter. If they make the attraction less fun for those who do not have the devices then it will be bad.

*edit* Want to add to my last sentence "or makes a not fun attraction actually fun". It all depends on what we get and why I think we have to wait and see.

Power Up bands lead to an exclusive attraction you wouldn’t otherwise be able to experience without purchasing one. Same goes for the lightsaber workshops in GE.

I agree it’ll suck if the experience is tailored to an upcharge accessory, but it’s going to make them a ton of money. Plus, the customization of the experience to the accessory is a very cool idea.

Maybe another part of it is that Disney always seems to try too damn hard to change the game when they could just make simple but consistently good rides.

They could have just made a neat Spider-Man ride with some cool sets, but instead it's got to be this innovative ride with a unique controller-less interface and merchandise integration.

It's like the only two rides you can get are high-tech extravaganzas heavily dependent on new tech or middling flat rides meant to supplement the e-tickets. It doesn't feel like Disney on its current course is ever going to be make something like Pets that leverages pre-existing tech to make something that is humble yet nonetheless effective. Although that might also be an issue of inflated budgets, i.e, massive spending necessitates massive return which must be assured through IP integration and tech utilization.

EDIT: Despite all that, I have hope that this ride will be good. Still holding out on neat sets transitioning us to various parts of the campus.

Right? Heck, I would’ve been happy if the land had a Doctor Strange take on the Haunted Mansion/Mystic Manor formula where we journey through the Sanctum Sanctorum! But that’s not “game-changing” enough, so oh well…

That actually brings up another major failing. In seeking to create a land that unifies all the disparate aesthetics of the Marvel movies, they've missed out on replicating some of it's most iconic locations. Where is Asgard, the Sanctum Sanctorum (which is practically made for projection mapping), Wakanda, or the Quantumn Realm?

This is probably why Guardians works. It wasn't beholden to the aesthetic of the land. It could replicate the aesthetic of the film without fear of thematic inconsistency. I suppose in another timeline, Disney could have leveraged the portals or multiverse concepts to create an Avengers land where you are easily transported to disparate locations.

I thought this was a cool addition that I was not expecting, only to come here and see some interesting meltdowns over it...

I like @Alicia 's take on it:

Yeah interactive toys you can use throughout lands are the next generation of theme park merch

At least you can actually use them for something, unlike lightsabers

that is the problem with the Marvel Universe ot is all over the place. I think Wakanda will be in Disney forward but with the space they have to work with in DCA I think the campus concept is fine.

I use this weird flexible rubber/wire spatula thing to flip my pancakes but I think it might work on flies. Not sure tho.

We now how have an electrified swatter that looks like a tennis racket. It's fun but there is a part of me that wants to touch it to see how much juice is in it. Fear has, thankfully, held me back.

This has been one of my chief complaints, along with the unbelievable amounts of money they spend on just one ride, about Disney's modus operandi. While pushing the envelope can be awesome (see Forbidden Journey), guests really just want fun and enjoyable rides. It doesn't need to be so overly complicated.

That's why I hope the Avengers E-ticket possibly chooses a reliable system (not a roller coaster, but maybe an EMV or the now-old kuka arm format). That space behind Guardians could probably fit two rides, so if they're going to fill it with a mega E-ticket, it better be reliable.

EDIT: It would also be neat if they fully took advantage of the space and made the Avengers building a multifloor mini-indoor land, with offshoots into various activities and rides. Like Nintendo.

You've already put more thought into this than Disney has ;p

All new lands should be multi-level imo, especially in California.

What I would've done if I were calling the shots: Spider-man still would've been an interactive digital mapping ride, but it would've been a smaller scale MMRR. Dr. Strange would be a Vekoma madhouse.

I think they wanted to encapsulate the Avengers into one "land" experience. The Avengers as a whole aren't necessarily indicative to a specific location....except maybe SHIELD HQ, which is for the big E-ticket down the road.....which got postponed.

New info and guide map. Also confirms they will be doing a virtual queue for Spider-Man.

First Look: Guide Map for Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure Park

Recruits, it’s almost time for you to gear up for the opening of Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort! To assist you in planning your mission, we’re excited to share a first look at the Avengers Campus map.
disneyparks.disney.go.com

EDIT: "Similar to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, virtual queue enrollment times will be twice daily, at 7 a.m. and 12 p.m."

EDIT 2: A new wrinkle!

EDIT 3: I guess we'll see how this goes, but hopefully it's a smoother experience than Rise. I hope this is a pandemic exception and not the norm for rides going forward. Imagine having to contend with vqs for Tron, Ratatouille, and Rise all at once.

Having to join a squirrel lottery at the crack of dawn for a slightly good chance of getting to ride should not be the norm of any new ride they reveal. I really hate this. It causes so much unnecessary stress. It sucks for people who pay for a day only to find out they can’t ride.
