Any ideas on what the second two gates would have been? I'd have to think that it would be kind of hard to come up with fresh ideas for not just one, but two whole separate parks. Maybe some people who were following Universal's development pre-2001 know?

I would think that when Islands of Adventure was originally planned to be Cartoon World, Universal left a lot of potential themes un-tapped. That essentially left anything non-cartoon related to fill in the extra parks they were supposedly planning on. But Islands of Adventure isn't Cartoon World--it's themed to several different things all being vaguely tied into adventure and/or literature. Those just happen to be about the two broadest themes you could come up with--lots of IP's/theme park-friendly ideas happen to be based on ideas of adventure or literature.

For example, let's say they wanted a jungle-themed third-park (a la Animal Kingdom...makes sense to reflect the competition a little bit). This would have been neat and non-redundant with The Studios and Cartoon World adjacent. However, since Cartoons got the axe in favor of IOA, jungles are repetitive (since IOA has Jurassic Park). They could've also done a more realistic, DisneySea-type park, themed to exaggerated versions of real places--however, with IOA next door, that's now become repetitive due to Port of Entry and (more or less) Lost Continent (which wouldn't have existed in Cartoon World).

I feel like the wide variety of theming found in IOA kind of puts them in a corner. Obviously, the massive resort plans got cut around the time of construction since almost none of the original hotels made it to the final product. Maybe budgets got severely cut during the actual planning period and that's what led to putting everything on the table into IOA? Obviously nobody saw the success of Potter coming, and maybe they thought that whatever concepts for additional parks wouldn't be needed.

In any case, I don't see a third park coming any time soon. There's a lot that needs to be done to their existing parks first. But even if IOA and Universal were absolutely perfect and a third gate was to begin construction tomorrow, I don't know what kind of theme it would possibly implement. Maybe you guys have ideas.

The way I see it is that they can go with another type of media outlet, since the first is movies and the second is books, the third one based around all time favorite video games would be a great addition.

- Warcraft/starwars
- Nintendo
- Halo
- Assassins creed
- 1-2 other IP's

I think it would work as a great outlet in bring in crazy crowds.

For those who think this wouldnt work for kids/girls, youd be surpirsed. Women liek those cutesy rides when they are at disney, but they love the thrills as well.

Losing the land was a blessing in disguise. Now with comcast they are pushing to optimize the land that they have for the next 7-8 years before we truly hear about anew gate opening. And even then, they will still replace old rides for new.

Before anything can happen with a 3rd park, we will first see

- New Kong IP
- new JP ride
- new suess ride
- Replacement for TL and lost continent
- Replacement for MIB area, expansion plot
- Replacement for Kids zone
- Replacement for twiter and T2 areas

This about it liek this, we were expecting to see Kong, JP and Lorax in 2015. But we should have thought smarter than that, the execs said that we will pretty much be seeing 1 new ride per year for years to come. I expect some years to see a little more action than just that (I expecta new kids zone or MIB area replacement with the opening of a new suess ride - 1 ride per park for a few of the years).

But lets say that they choose 1 new ride/area per year. That means that in 8-10 years the parks will be considered NEW

- 2014 DA
- 2015 JP
- 2016 Kong and/or LC
- 2017 Kid zone or/and Suess LC
- 2018 Kid zone or/and suess LC
- 2019 toon lagoon
etc.

My optimal plan would be 1 ride/zone per park. Orlando has 2 parks

2014 - DA
2015 - Kidzone/JP
2016 - Kidzone/Suess
2017 - T2 Area/ LC

That was more stuff is done faster

so we have time to discuss a third gate later :)

oh, how amazing it would be for the expansion to open on that day... major major blow to Disney. Plus seeing as "the battle for 2017" is goes to Universal, I can see maying people leaving the dark side that is disney to go to universal. New benches at animal kingdom arent going to cut it

That's an oddly specific date for the third park to open; I'll mark my calendar  So, about the theme of said third gate- so far we've come up with video games and animal/jungle-themed parks as possibilities- anyone else have any ideas? The only other thing I could think of would be a generic theme park theme, like Magic Kingdom (and no, nobody can say that Magic Kingdom has a magic theme :bonk:)...

Video games would be more original and fit the overarching theme of each park being based on a media format. Animals/jungle wouldn't work since JP and Kong are already in IOA. Aside from JAWS and Dora... what else could they put?

Mario/DK/Yoshi's Island (mesh of all 3 for a 20-25 acre mega-land)
Zelda (fairly straight forward)
Pokemon (Kanto/Johto for nostalgia and timeless reasons)
Miscellaneous (Kirby/Pikmin/Jak and Daxter/Crash Bandicoot/etc)
Horror (Castlevania/Resident Evil)
Sci-fi (Halo/Star Fox/Metroid/Space Invaders/Asteroids)
8 Bit (Pac-Man/Frogger/PunchOut!)

There's room for 7 easy-to-flesh-out lands and the opening area can be a regular urban city (Grand Theft Auto/Call of Duty/etc)

This is all true, though I just can't see a video game theme park being very popular, primarily due to the fact that it's never been done before (to my knowledge), and that kinda would suggest that no one has ever thought it a good investment (at least no one with the power to make theme parks)...

lets start with IP's they have access to.

WOW
Halo, since they were apart of the team that was going to make the original movie, im sure they can pull some stings and get that IP for a park

What would be cool

Assassins creed
Mario/DK/Yoshi Family Island

so thats 4 Lands, 2 more and you have a park

I personally would enjoy a video game theme park, but I honestly don't see this happening.

Video games are still viewed as a niche market by the big corporations. Movies based on video game franchises have a history of bombing at the box office. Now this could simply be because the movies have generally been terrible. But these under-performing movies give the impression to organizations like Universal or Disney that video games lack mass appeal.

Yeah, but lets say you get microsoft or bungie to back you up... then you can get their creative ideas into the mix...

Also, and this is blue sky to the extreme, I was thinking about this for LOTR, but how cool would it be if you can have a virtual reality room where you enter into the world of warcraft and you battle against more people. Like in disney quest, I dont know if they have it still but they use to have a virtual reality simulator. Imagine being able to go into a 25 vs 25 virtual reality battle. Would be crazy

I agree. Although there are games that sell very well, they arent theme park friendly at all. You cant have a Men in Black type ride themed to Call of Duty, or a Grand Theft Auto Test Track ride. Those are the games I hear about (I dont really play so Im guessing that theyre the most popular since Ive heard of them lol) and those are the games that wouldnt fit in a theme park. Personally, I wouldnt go to a video game theme park because I would think its for nerds and Im sure Im not the only one who would think that

The thing about virtual reality is that it gets repetitive (look how many people freak out at the anount of simulators Universal already has) AND its very low capacity. Perfect for a venue like DisneyQuest, but not so much for a world-renowned theme park proper.

If you don't play video games, then it would be hard to understand the video game theme park idea. But there are MANY families with kids who would disagree with you. Kids know who Mario is, they know who Luigi and Princess Peach are. They know Donkey Kong and Pokemon. They know Zelda. They know Angry Birds. I would say they know these characters a lot more than they do Woody Woodpecker or Popeye, and probably even more than Mickey Mouse. Think of all the people who went crazy over the Wii console. And all the kids with DS handhelds. All the mom's who play Candy Crush. And this is not even taking into account the "fanboy" market. All the people who grew up with video games in the 80's and 90's. My opinion, I think its an untapped market.

Totally forgot things like Temple Run, Angry Birds, etc. could be included. Video games are easily the most underrated sector of media today and are popular enough for a theme park if done right.

Not to mention a video game theme park would usher in a new era of what themed attractions could be: highly interactive, dynamic, immersive, and visually stunning. With UC's know-how and Comcast's cash flow, just imagine the possibilities.

And you know they'd be up to the challenge. Look at IOA. That whole park was one huge experiment. So much innovation that astounds fifteen years later.

There are timeless video game franchises, like Mario and Pokemon. And besides, I say it time and time again, compare the popularity of Toon Lagoon with the relevance of those characters. Look at Splash Mountain. How many kids have seen Song of the South? People come for the things that are familiar, but they stay for the things they fall in love with.

The creative genius of UC and the makes of that particular video game (Halo, Call of duty, assassins creed)

That would be awesome.

What dark rides could there actually be tho?

Halo Dark ride on a worthog would be sick, or a walk through an actual covenant ship (PERFECT FOR HHn)
Pokemon - yes, but I see this going into japan (MIB, if possible) as a dark ride
Assassins creed dark ride? "journey through history"
Mario bro's saving peach from bowser maybe
