I haven't watched any of it but this was supposedly a plan for the Scream TV series wherein a season of the show would pull back to have the actors on the show becoming targets of a killer and they would go to either the characters from the films (i.e. Sidney) or the actors in the films for help, can't remember which.
The weakest part of 7, for me, has to be the writing. It just feels like a super, super rough draft. Super underbaked and just not crafted with the care it should have been. The why of that will likely never be known and it's likely a combination of everything (the fallout from the unjust departure of Barrera, a shortened development cycle, script leaks, etc.).
And it's a shame because the kills are excellent, the score is great, the directing is fine and the cast does well with what little they're given. I really do think Scream 8 has a chance to be one of the best in the entire series if they have a better, more solidified story going in and are able to stick to it but with the news of Williamson wanting to move on the person at the head of steering the franchise's ship is up in the air.
I also think they're boxed in pretty hard in terms of moving forward. Will another 'legacy' style Scream with Neve and Courtney at the top of the marketing push bring in the throngs again? I think they'd possibly face some diminishing returns. But for as fine a job as she did in 7 I don't think Isabel May is at the level to lead a Scream film on her own. So then do we just re-hash a new target that is somehow related to Sidney so she's involved? Do we push on with yet another Sidney-centric story with a killer who are Stu and Billy's long lost nephews that were babies and saw Sidney murder their uncles? Creatively I would love to see just an entirely new cast of characters tangled up in a web of slashings set in a world where people use the Ghostface mask to commit their brutal crimes but good luck selling that to money hungry execs.
The franchise can't die but it has no real place to go without dragging along the same victims it's held hostage for 30 years.
