Undertone was... okay.

Superb sound design was a MUST and they did nail THAT aspect but a lot of the writing and character-work/acting leaves the movie wanting. It's a purposefully isolating movie experience 'for plot' but there are multiple sequences where i questioned the choices of the MC. I found myself asking why the lead was in this situation to begin with multiple times, and i do mean that in a literal sense: If the movie is audio-driven, she really only has to take the headphones off and leave - it's actually kinda funny. They never present you with an alternative to this idea or even support evidence that if someone were to do so there would be a ramification for the action until it's too late. It really is a little befuddling how the MC more or less let's the movie happen to her; Even if it IS painted as ignorance or skepticism, it's still dumb for this person to simply KEEP LISTENING. Also, as someone who has been running a podcast for 10 years: "that's not how that works" came out of my mouth a couple times, but it's equally hand-wave-able for the simplicity of the plot.

To me, it had a lot of the same problems i had with Skinamarink - despite being totally different movies in narrative and execution - they have a lot in common. There is some REALLY great stuff here -some experimental shots and sequences- but you're constantly waiting for the 'dime drop' and (tbh) i don't think it ever comes. Like Skinamarink, it has some GREAT moments but then it just kinda ends. You can see them finally getting to the part we've been waiting for, some fit finally about to hit the shan, and then -boom- cut to black. End credits.

I don't typically recommend movies to people when they're 5/10 or lower, SO -while i LIKED it- it's scratching through at like a 6/10; Which is the same score i gave Skinamarink, and I'm saying the same things THEN as i do NOW:
It's not gonna be for everyone and others will definitely DISlike it.
It's a slow-burn; And the worst of its kind in the regard that it's hard to justify the journey by the time you reach the end.
While it has some GOOD hidden in that runtime, it needed MORE and never quite does what you WANT nor EXPECT (which is both a surprising subversion and disappointing expectation at the same time).

Ain't no way in blue hell that podcast coming out weekly every Friday, that's a new episode dropping every three months with that recording schedule.

Undertone is not my cup of tea but does what it does pretty effectively. If your bag is the patented A24 foreboding, deep, dark and lush atmospheric horror with some buried subtext creeping around the upstairs bathroom like your on-her-deathbed mother, you'll enjoy this. Definitely worth checking out, especially in the theater with the amplified sound.

THE BRIDE! - I think the biggest issue is that the back half is really boring. It's never totally consistent but that first half, where all the weirdest swings are, really had me half-in and half-out. The back half lost me by being really kind of dull though, I just didn't care about characters this vaguely defined.

The Bride! Is a pretty interesting take on the Frankenstein mythos, even if I couldn't understand what was going on half of the time (why is Mary Shelley evil here). It’s also one of those movies where it’s very hard to criticize it lest you either sound like or attract the attention of a certain group of goobers. I would have liked to see more of the “female revolution” that only consisted of 2 scenes, one of which was at the mid-credits scene. The Monster Mash playing in the end credits makes the whole movie worth it.

following the Bride! situation has been wild lol :lmao:

personally I have never liked Maggie Gyllenhaal, I never liked her attitude in roles she played, I felt like she ruined the Dark Knight, ( compared to what Katie Holmes did with the role) I just personally never liked Maggie's style.

but I was interested in this movie just because of the theme and the characters, I was REALLY curious, it sounded like an amazing idea,
but the reviews have not been good at all,
(outside of the political trolling going on)
ive seen some women on YouTube give it a really bad review, really bad.
it's been kinda brutal to see the YouTube reviews,

but then you have a lot of trolling towards the movie for it's more political subjects and takes.
it's been wild.

Between Amy and Michael, horror represents 50% of the acting wins at the 2026 Academy Awards!

Loved seeing Sinners, Frankenstein, and Weapons take those wins. I was even surprised to see The Ugly Stepsister be nominated! Great year for horror.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one underwhelmed by Undertone. It's a modern-day Paranormal Activity with a great gimmick. Unfortunately, terrible pacing and poor direction de-rail what could otherwise have been a worthy entry into acoustic horror. The cinematography and sound design are strong, but this flick splits its time up between our lead taking care of her near-death mom and recording her audio podcast. Her day-to-day duties involving her mom are uninteresting and most of the scary things that occur involve a water faucet turning itself on or her mom appearing to say prayers (which shouldn’t be possible considering her condition).

There are enough freaky or creepy moments here that a viewing (or a listen) isn’t a total waste.
The audio recordings our protagonists are sent starting to slowly correlate to what’s going on with our lead actress is certainly concerning enough, and the final minutes of pure auditory chaos is pretty cool. As far as actors go, Adam DiMarco as Justin is the stand-out. He only ever appears as a voice but he fully and believably inhabits his role. This should have been exceptional, unfortunately it’s only average. See it in a theatre at matinee price or wait till you can stream it with headphones on.
