Undertone was... okay.
Superb sound design was a MUST and they did nail THAT aspect but a lot of the writing and character-work/acting leaves the movie wanting. It's a purposefully isolating movie experience 'for plot' but there are multiple sequences where i questioned the choices of the MC. I found myself asking why the lead was in this situation to begin with multiple times, and i do mean that in a literal sense: If the movie is audio-driven, she really only has to take the headphones off and leave - it's actually kinda funny. They never present you with an alternative to this idea or even support evidence that if someone were to do so there would be a ramification for the action until it's too late. It really is a little befuddling how the MC more or less let's the movie happen to her; Even if it IS painted as ignorance or skepticism, it's still dumb for this person to simply KEEP LISTENING. Also, as someone who has been running a podcast for 10 years: "that's not how that works" came out of my mouth a couple times, but it's equally hand-wave-able for the simplicity of the plot.
To me, it had a lot of the same problems i had with Skinamarink - despite being totally different movies in narrative and execution - they have a lot in common. There is some REALLY great stuff here -some experimental shots and sequences- but you're constantly waiting for the 'dime drop' and (tbh) i don't think it ever comes. Like Skinamarink, it has some GREAT moments but then it just kinda ends. You can see them finally getting to the part we've been waiting for, some fit finally about to hit the shan, and then -boom- cut to black. End credits.
I don't typically recommend movies to people when they're 5/10 or lower, SO -while i LIKED it- it's scratching through at like a 6/10; Which is the same score i gave Skinamarink, and I'm saying the same things THEN as i do NOW:
It's not gonna be for everyone and others will definitely DISlike it.
It's a slow-burn; And the worst of its kind in the regard that it's hard to justify the journey by the time you reach the end.
While it has some GOOD hidden in that runtime, it needed MORE and never quite does what you WANT nor EXPECT (which is both a surprising subversion and disappointing expectation at the same time).
