Hi all! Haven’t posted in quite some time but still been lurking all throughout spec season. Regarding Evil Dead, I have a theory…I got the impression from marketing, and even more so after seeing the movie, that the “main” Deadite’s appearance was intentionally kept hidden until the film. I’m wondering if this Deadite is featured in the preview merch, such as being the collectible figure for the carousel display, and Universal has held off on the house reveal until the movie has been out long enough to avoid spoiling that? Just a thought at least!

This is my thought. Maybe they wanted to let it be out for a week or two before they revealed what the deadites look like. Who knows, maybe they even want to use the post credit scene in the marketing, so they want to let it be out for a bit.

Not to mention, once it gets announced as a house, ticket sales may increase a bit. Maybe they want tickets sales to increase after opening weekend.

I personally hope it doesn’t get cold. I was very excited about evil dead rise. I was very bummed to see it. Get pulled last minute. I would love
To see the post credit scene be the final scene in the house. Give Ellie a chance to shine in a house, even if it is for just a scene.

If it were to get pulled, the only thing that I could hope would be that maybe in the future, we get a combination Rise/Burn/Wrath mashup house.

They announced “Horrors of Blumhouse” before Black Phone. They didn’t announce “The Black Phone.” There was a clear difference in what was getting announced and the movie.

Announcing a house near or on a movie premiere date has the potential to confuse audiences of when the movie is actually coming out, because now two dates get associated with it. Studios don’t want that. Historically, the only time Universal has announced a (standalone) IP house before the IP is actually released is if the IP will release after the event starts (trailer houses). When that happens, it’s weeks in advance of the release and can prevent any confusion.

I’m not saying your feedback is wrong and I appreciate it, but Horrors of Blumhouse was announced the day before the Black phone with the Grabber being prominently featured alongside the Freaky girl. To me that’s smart advertising (made me want to see in theaters more). If their theory is the general public would be confused then let them look for it in theaters to find out correct date. Anyone interested in seeing that movie should find it easy and still creates more awareness.

This may not be the norm but I think is a smarter strategy then announcing something after it’s lost any steam it had. Even weeks before is still much better, just my humble opinion.

HHN is currently running Spotify ads for an Ozzy Osbourne house that was never officially announced. They announced the biggest shift in ticketing policy in years in a random customer service reply. In 2017 they had a massive weekslong countdown for what turned out to be a contest sweepstakes. These things happen.

Feel like people treat marketing like their the precogs in a pool from Minority Report instead of just, like, random people in an office. It could be as simple as someone didn't sign the right approval or marketing plan before going on vacation. Not unique to Universal, I've run into it plenty of times in my work as well. There's a million reasons why something could be delayed and 999 thousand of them are boring, so I'd probably wait until more credible rumors come out before I start sweating about losing an IP.

Yep. I feel like the fandom latches onto some random release date or movie anniversary every year and then gets shocked when it doesn't lead to an announcement. Remember Ghostbusters Day lmao? Instead, the house was announced randomly a full 3 weeks beforehand.

HHN notoriously times stuff in the weirdest way humanly possible. Trying to understand it is a lost cause. EDR may not be announced yet, but neither is Ozzy and they're literally running ads for that house already like you said.

Active lawsuits that make the creation of the films look incredibly bad. The accusations include creepy, illegal stuff behind-the-scenes like taking non-consensual nudes of the actors, mistreating them, and not appropriately paying people what they were owed/breaching contracts. Definitely stuff Universal would probably like to detach themselves from.

Like, A Quiet Place: Day One was dropped June 28th and it would've made total sense to announce the house at the same time since it's peak announcement season. Instead, the house was announced randomly a full 3 weeks beforehand.

For better or worse everything about that actress’ lawsuit that wasn’t financial has stricken out by a judge so it’s all financial now. Doesn’t mean her accusations aren’t real, it’s just not legally actionable. The financial issues are more then enough to keep Art out of HHN.

Sooo are we thinking Ozzy announcement on the 22nd, anniversary of his passing or would that be distasteful. I see his hometown is honoring him that day.

EDB being pulled because it's "bombing" is crazy. It will leg out decent profitability on its $20 mil budget. It also had minimal marketing (which is a contributing factor to its non explosiveness at the BO).

Edit: I don't believe that to be the case. "crazy" is about the idea of that happening

Maybe if his hometown declares an "Ozzy Osbourne (Remembrance) Day" then it wouldn't necessarily be distasteful if it's honoring his legacy you know?

I’m sure everyone has already said everything I’m about to say, but I guess I’ll bite too. While I don’t know how IP‘s work from a business perspective, the one thing I will say is that I just don’t see how universal or any company would pull an IP for performing badly. If they’ve already paid the money for it, made merchandise, cast performers, and built a house around it, there’s just not a world where I see that happening. It would be a gigantic waste of money for what ultimately does not change an event whatsoever. People are not going to cancel their horror nights plans just because EDB is going to be there, and they certainly aren’t going to make new reservations because Hellblock 2 electric Boogaloo is coming. Imagine having to change a house and spend even more money on something after you’ve already acquired the IP, and then having to change all all the merch spending even more money. That would be a financial loss. The only chance I see of anything like that ever happening has to do purely with legal reasons. Which absolutely happens, but I have not heard that in this case.

Also not my thing, but apparently they’ve had full-blown concert within Fortnite. So it could be something like that.

The only way I could see Evil Dead Burn dropping is if WB wants to use the space for a different IP and was able to get quick sign off to make a switch, but they still can use the marketing at the event for VOD rentals / HBO Max subscriptions. Switching to a last minute original like Hellblock Horror isn't going to do anything for crowd flow at the soundstages, so there's very little upside for Universal to drop the house at this point and strain creative.

There's just no way Universal agreed to develop and build an Evil Dead Burn house if their ability to use it was contingent on the film's performance. That isn't a thing. If something happened, it's unrelated to performance.

But again: I don't think there's any real evidence that it isn't coming. They just haven't announced it as fast as some here would prefer. I actually think the theory that they're holding because the key art features the concealed look of the Deadite is compelling.

That's my biggest thing. The "they scrapped it for performance reasons" logic implies that Universal would rather waste extra money retheming the house incredibly last minute, scrap all IP perks (marketing, merch, etc) for an original house, and potentially even affect their partnership with Warner Brothers/New Line Cinema all because the movie wasn't a Sinners-level box office smash? It doesn't track. Contracts exist, they understand the risks of working with not yet released work. etc.

Granted, I dont know much about media rights and licensing IP among entertainment companies, but to play devil’s advocate, couldn’t the benefit to Universal being avoiding paying the licensing fee for a property that’s not evidently moving the needle?

Sure, the house is built, but can’t imagine too much money went into designing anything “Evil Dead”-specific (the movies are all relatively generic in their iconography). Plus so much has been made here about how much HHN recycles props/layouts during construction anyway.

My assumption is that the biggest loss would be presumably eating the cost of merchandise, but if it’s not gonna sell anyway who cares? Shelf space is valuable, maybe there’s an equation that says bumping that merch for more Sinners/Stranger Things is worth the hassle of the last-minute pivot?

Again, this is all out of my element so I’m genuinely curious. I get that, even setting aside dollars and cents there’s probably a risk of straining the relationship with the studio, but given how that’s gone in the past (Conjuring, Evil Dead Rise, etc.) was it that great in the first place?

I don't have a direct answer about the loss/gain ratio for those factors, but I guess my biggest question would be: "why?"

They've seemingly already recouped financially, as the box office is already over double the reported budget ($51.4 million worldwide on a $20 million production budget) and it's sitting solidly in the 71% & 77% on Rotten Tomatoes/"Generally Favorable" on Metacritic. Nothing about it is a whopping failure. Nothing about it is steeped in legal issues. Nothing about it is facing a controversy. Why would anything about the current scenario warrant a last-minute scramble for Universal? Especially when they already have to deal with the likely scrap of any Terrifier merch/material/etc (which fortunately isn't a house at least).

I say all this as someone who has not seen the movie yet and has no strong allegiance to it coming to the event one way or another.

From what I’ve seen, the rumor really snowballed after people convinced themselves an announcement was coming during premiere week. When it didn’t happen, the conversation shifted from “maybe our assumption was wrong” to “something must have happened behind the scenes!”

The incentives just aren't there. It's a lose-lose-lose for Universal.

Universal wouldn't have agreed to feature the IP in the first place if they didn't think it would be a draw of some kind (or it services a relationship with a company they want to do business with in the future. Take Evil Dead now, get something like It down the line.)

Your assumption that they didn't put too much money into designing anything Evil Dead-specific is a false one. Everything IP-related has to get final approval from the party/parties that control the IP, and Universal's whole pitch is to realize the film worlds in a physical space. In other words, they absolutely put the usual amount of resources and effort into building/sourcing sets, props, costumes, makeups, and masks that closely resembled what's on screen. Recycling is more permissible/feasible for original houses, though obviously props are props are props, so some things can get repurposed in IP settings.

The merchandise would be another issue, but probably not the biggest one. With that said, reprinting house shirts to exclude Evil Dead Burn this late in the game would be a considerable expense and hassle.

The actual problem would be replacing the house itself. The Horror Nights design and production workflow is not built in a way to facilitate last-minute pivots, period. These houses call for something like 15+ months of planning from conception to execution (not sure what the actual number is these days, but for a while, it was around here). Yes, they've already built sets, which now need to be modified enough to conceal what they originally were to the satisfaction of WB. It's hard to say how much of a lift that is without having seen the movie or what they've constructed, but the event starts in just over a month.

This means they would have to rally creative teams of all stripes to quickly brainstorm a new concept that can work with what's there for the least amount of money, because they didn't budget for this. These teams are also swamped with actually finishing the rest of the event, and some vendors may have already committed to other projects. Still, they somehow either need to build (or more likely, again, recycle) costume, mask, and makeup assets that ideally align with the casts they've already assembled. Then they've gotta clear the new house name and description and commission new art assets...

...all of this for a haunted house that they know is more likely than not to be a dud and rejected by guests. Hellblock Horror was not good, and word got around fast.

All this to say, this isn't something that Universal would do unless they were forced to.
