I can see how it would be difficult to escape HHN if your circle of friends works the event. As for the rest… maybe I’m just an old guy, but disconnecting from social media and even avoiding this particular forum can be beneficial. You’re a good poster, so it would be this forums loss, but HHN fandom is such a small, esoteric bit of the net it really can be avoided.

And yes, the Terrifier conversation was great. I’d love to see more discussions along those lines. Horror is such a tricky, multifaceted, socially relevant genre that there’s a lot to explore.

I do appreciate the kind words. It is definitely a rather small problem reflected and echoed greatly by my personal and fairly singular spot in life currently. The repetition has definitely begun to grind though, and it's coming from far more places than just here.

It's certainly nothing I would leave the forum over, (I've been here since the Wet n' Wild closure, yall ain't never getting rid of me at this point haha!), because even here the HHN thread is an anomaly. It has its' own flow and expectations compared to the rest of the forum. It's a lot more fast-paced, antsier, and a lot more reactive. Not as much of the larger, Terrifier-type discussions as other threads. A lot of regulars are here seemingly exclusively for Halloween discussion, and rarely dip into the larger part of IU. One can definitely enjoy the site without engaging with HHN threads much.

I do find it surprising just how ravenous this thread can be; especially with information that by all measures, they already basically know all that there is to know about it. It's just such a different beast compared to the rest of the site, and while I may have understood the appeal at some point, by now the novelty has worn off and I'd honestly rather they just drop the event information all at once on August 1st or something. I just don't get the intensity of it, or how someone can just be in constant, vigilant HHN mode for literal years and not get even a little tired of it.

It just feels like ... say, if back when E3 was a big event; when it was the Christmas day for gaming news and announcements that it was for decades; What if by St. Patricks Day, we knew about 80% of the lineup of game reveal trailers for the presentations in June. and right after that week of big reveals, there was constant buzz and energy towards digging up the next year's reveals, and that energy about E3 just .. never stopped. For me, it would absolutely grow stale.

E3 was special because we didn't actually know what was going to happen; and because it was unusual and unique for so many games to be announced all at once. It was the singular week a year where any possible upcoming game could be shown off. Would it be fun to have that E3 energy all year? Maybe at first, but honestly after awhile, it's just overwhelming, and there probably wouldn't be all that much to talk about over a full year, and eventually I just kinda wish I could enjoy the actual reveal trailers again without them all being spoiled 8 months ahead of time. The events are special because E3, and HHN, aren't always happening; but for me, E3 kinda never ends? And it's unfortunately difficult to tune out of completely.

As I brought up in my original post though, I totally get how someone out-of-state; who isn't surrounded by the event year-round; that gets to experience seasons in a regular way; or anything like that might want to anticipate their upcoming trip or get ready for the chill autumnal weather. If this is anyone's thing, all power to you. It's just something that was on my mind regarding this speculation scene in particular, and my relationship to it.

since I moved to central FL, I've learned that the UoR employees get their 'info' from these same interwebs as the superfans. Am I wrong for hoping the next HHN announcement is for a Purge house just 'cuz I want to see what type of meltdown it would cause?

You know, I hadn't really thought about it in these terms until today, but it kind of felt like the IP houses last year worked in spite of their properties -- does anyone actually care about Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire? Does anyone even remember the name of the last Insidious movie? A Quiet Place is great but it felt like it had its moment half a decade ago.

Comparatively, this year's lineup feels crazy strong. The only thing that feels like it might be a little past its prime is FNAF (would've been outrageous around 2016 if that Vegas haunt hadn't gotten the rights), but the movies have given those animatronics a second wind among the GP. I guess you could argue Jason is a bit dusty too, but there's a definite timeless aspect to a nice hockey mask and machete pairing. Fallout, Terrifier, and even the Wyatt Sicks are all great fits for the event with huge current fanbases and recent popular projects. We'll see how the houses themselves fare but on paper I just keep getting more excited about this year.

I wouldn't count FNAF as past it's prime. The first movie is less than 2 years old and did phenomenal at the boxoffice making almost 140 million in the US alone even in the face of it releasing day and date on streaming. And its sequel releases this year. It's insanely popular in a way that has started to cross generations, which is the sign of a good IP.

That being said, I 100% agree with your take on last year's IP's and this years overall feeling more impactful.

We had this discussion on the boards before FNAF was green lit as a film. It was popular for what it was but not HHN popular. Once the film was on the horizon (and did well), a lot agreed that it would eventually make it way to the event.

And here we are!

Real talk, aside from one subplot that makes no sense, Frozen Empire is a better movie than Afterlife and does some real interesting things with the setting.

The Red Door sucks unmitigated ass but those other four movies are pretty awesome if you approach the first two as “I wanna watch a neat horror movie” and wean yourself into “I want to see Lin Shaye do stuff.”

This year is so interesting to me because there’s really no big hook that immediately pulls me in, but the “there’s something for everyone” approach actually feels earned this time and is making me excited. It doesn’t feel like marketing or fan hype driving the train, there’s a genuine swell of “I like what I’m seeing here”.

It’s just a good feeling going into the event, and I’m hopeful for a major bounce back after last year.

FNAF is definitely still a big franchise but I think folks (especially people who weren't in the age demographic at the time) don't remember how big it was in that 2014-2017 stretch. Six games came out in those three years and they were all among the biggest success stories in indie gaming history. There was a time when you could have a fairly lucrative online career exclusively talking about Five Nights at Freddy's. I can't find any exact numbers but I'm fairly sure the first Markiplier FNAF video is still the most-viewed game playthrough on YouTube (for reference, his most recent FNAF video, uploaded three weeks ago, netted about 1% of that view count -- Markiplier is obviously not at the peak of his career right now, but I still think that says something).

The series is probably, as you said, crossing the generational boundary a little more cleanly now, but as someone who was in the thick of it at the time, there's nothing approaching the mania that surrounded FNAF back then. If the movie had actually started production in 2015 like they originally planned, I am absolutely certain it would have been much more of a phenomenon.

I think something to note with FNAF is that a lot of the younger kids/pre-teens who made the franchise the overwhelming pop culture behemoth that it was during the 2014-2018 era are now old enough to attend HHN and buy their own admission. Not to say every fan of the franchise is younger, but as someone now in their early 30’s, FNAF was the generation behind me in my 20’s so I know it predominantly skewed younger.

Would parents have taken pre-teens if say HHN28 had it that year? Absolutely, but I’m not sure a large majority of them would have made it to the event.

Now the predominant fanbase has aged up- some have aged out, but a lot of those young people still have an affection for those characters and will be making FNAF a priority this Halloween season. The movie has made the series more cross generational, and the sequel will only expand that reach.

It seems late, but I think now is the best time for the series to debut at the event.

Yeah, I think this is a stronger case for the timeliness of the series' inclusion than the movie argument. I don't think FNAF has that rabid of an adult fanbase right now, but there are definitely a lot of people my age with disposable income who have a lot of nostalgia and fondness for the franchise. And of course there are still plenty of tweens and teens who will beg their parents to fly to Orlando so they can see Foxy in person.

Whether or not people think FNAF is past its prime, not the target audience of the event, etc, murderous animatronics in an arcade style setting seems like a no brainer for a unique haunted house

It's just a totally solid horror concept. If it wasn't already a really recognizable IP, it would make for a wonderful original house.

In that way, I hope they don't go too "book-report" with the house and overthink it. Don't try to emulate the movie too much. Just utilize the simplicity of creepy Chuck E. Cheese animatronics, and the solid and simple world-building of the pizzeria from that first game.

What’s funny is that I think that’s where the movie fell apart for me- it got too bogged down in explaining the lore when a vast majority of us casual fans just wanted to see pizzeria arcade scares.

If they dedicate any time to dreary forest dream sequences with ghost kids in the house, it’s going to be disappointing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are minimal scares from the animatronics. I’m kinda expecting the puppet to human ratio in the cast to be similar to something like Chupacabra. I’d love to be wrong though. This could be a very effective haunt if they stay focused on the pizzeria.

Honestly for me the only thing they really have to get right is the atmosphere. If there’s more than one appearance from each of the animatronics I’ll be pleased, but what will really elevate this one is set, lighting and sound design. If they nail that, the rest will fall into place.

This is my biggest worry with the movie basis. I don't care about Josh Hutcherson, I don't care about those ghost kids, I don't care about that mall or the woods or Josh Hutcherson's conniving aunt(???), I just want to see the robots doing scary stuff in the pizzeria. Which somehow doesn't even really happen in the movie!

Wait...what? Ok. Now I really have to watch the movie. Isn't that like...100% of what the game is?
