My basic take on Terrifier is that there's always been a level of sadism in slasher movies (I mean, obviously) but it's tempered by cheap effects or cutting away quickly or otherwise being so over the top and not revelling so much in the pain that makes it easier to accept as entertainment. For me *personally*, Terrifier's sadism crosses the line where it stops being fun and starts being weird.

Others might disagree, that's cool, opinions are like that. That's probably how normal people think of my Jason obsession.

Ironically, I feel Art is at his funniest when he’s trying to be human and relatable (the sunglasses, the flirting).

I don’t think Leone had any other intention for the first film other than to make a horror film has gory as possible. Once it started becoming clear he had something, he started trying to add a lore and narrative.

That's the line right there.

These are all about frivolous gore. Gore and kills that go so far they become ridiculous. A truly twisted version of The Three Stooges.

That's the line that torture porn didn't cross. It always stayed more somber and serious in tone.

You can’t tell me a franchise that literally dumps salt (and bleach) in the wound of a still-living mutilated, eating razors, and forcing a live rat down a person’s throat “didn’t cross” the line into torture porn’s focus on human pain. Sure, the ridiculousness of the gore has grindhouse sensibilities, but the scenes (and the presentation of extended brutality) strive for the visceral discomfort associated with films like Saw and Hostel.

This exactly, the best parts of all 3 movies are always when it's just Art trying to act normal, DHT's comedic timing is great and it's genuinely funny.

But as someone who's a huge fan of Saw (and in great gory kills in general), Terrifier still just makes me uncomfortable, and not in the good way.

Which house queue is going to have the most annoying folks talking about gooning and skibity toilet and other ultra processed pop culture: Terrifier or FNAF?

Besides Artiste, the soundstage house I’m most looking forward to is… FNAF. Which is nuts.

On the bright side, seems like a great year not to be messing with the soundstage queues too often.

I just wanted to add that it is totally fine to like what you like. There is absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with being a fan of those movies, or any other horror films for that matter. Just because something isn’t for me, doesn’t me it can’t be for you, and that’s ok. I’m also genuinely excited for fans of Terrifier to experience the house at HHN and I hope you’ll get to see everything you want to see from it.

My only point was calling it what it is, because there’s no need to justify liking something by changing what it is, nobody needs to justify liking anything that they like.

Nope nothing wrong with you as long as everyone understands that people have different thresholds for extreme violence and gore, which the Terrifier movies tend to float towards those who are fine with it. The sawing scene in the 1st movie definitely put me off.

That being said, still interested to see what they do with the IP for a house.

For me it crosses the line where it’s just so ridiculous, that it becomes even more unrealistic and therefore easier to digest?

That’s not to say some of the gore doesn’t still have me hiding behind my hands.

…..the head/ cloche scene had me laughing for longer than I’d like to admit.

I'm similar... Terrifier in it's display of gore is so camp and over the top that I just giggle at it. Now on the other side of the coin I find something like SAW so gritty and plausible that I can't watch it

I loathe the Terrifier films not because of how graphic and unquestionably brutal they are but because it's the same joke over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And over. And Over.

Prolonged torturous death scene after prolonged torturous death scene after prolonged torturous death bookended by just meh storytelling and character work. DHT is legitimately great at playing the character and the effects crew do some wonderful work but they just don't do anything for me.

Tom Savini has said that he never likes showing a fake head for longer than three seconds because if you look at a fake head for longer than three seconds, your brain will just know it's fake. The Terrifier films make you stare open eyed ala Alex DeLarge at the fake head for over 2 hours a pop.

No Terrifier movie should clock in at more than 90 minutes but they are so overlong and overstuffed. They're an exercise in tedium. :lmao:

But I AM looking forward to the house. I think it'll be lots of gory fun.

It's unquestionably great fodder for a haunted house attraction. Just last year I went to a smaller scale (comparatively to HHN, I mean) haunt that had a section dedicated to Terrifier and the character, gore and settings (bit of Christmas theming, a laundromat with an overclocked machine, etc.) made for some of the best parts.

Did you mean the new changes to Stay and Scream were never actually a thing? Or the removal of Express?

I guess to throw my hat in here - I've mentioned multiple times that I hate Terrifier. I watched the first one and felt absolutely zero need to watch the sequels.

That said - a good friend of mine messaged me yesterday in pure shock because he truly never thought Terrifier would come to HHN. He is truly floored by it, and that's great.

Another friend, who has never attended HHN, is currently making plans to go this year because of Terrifier. (And I'm curious to see how many of these people exist)

I was about to come on here and make a comment like this. I appreciate the FX work growing up around it and doing it myself now, but there's just something I really dislike about these films and the emphasis to consistently follow the torture.

I was in the shop today listening to some HHN YouTubers and every single one I listened to made a comment along the lines of "Yeah Terrifier isn't my thing, but here's what the house is going to be like". I thought maybe if it's coming to the event, other people are "excited" etc., maybe I could understand the appeal if I just gave the next one a shot. I watched the first a while ago, decided to watch the second tonight (or try to) to see if it had was better than the first. Spoiler alert, I turned it off.

I love scary... heck I love fake gore and over the top film kills. Ones that make you go "WOAH did I just see that?" when it happens. But this film is the first one where I've had the combination of knowing how a lot of it was a done, a lot of it very obviously looking fake, but the idea behind it being so demented and sadistic I literally felt like I had to take a shower when I turned it off, without there being any entertainment value of it having an interesting story, characters, etc. to keep watching. That scene @Legacy mentioned above is when I audibly said "are you kidding me right now?" and turned it off.

That's not to say people can't like what they like, by all means have at it. From a house perspective though, the "aftermath" of a lot of these kills looks like a lot of the props I've seen personally in haunts I've worked on/in. I still don't think the house is going to be nearly what the movies are. Yes, it'll be bloody. Yes, you will see the aftermath of things. Yes, perhaps there will be some gross effects like water spraying too, to make it seem like blood is coming out. But I just don't see it being as bad as people are thinking it's going to be. It's probably not that difficult to throw a fake corpse in each and every room based off the kills, splatter some fake blood everywhere, and boom suddenly it's the goriest house HHN has done. I do worry that maybe the focus of this house is purely going to be on that, and not on anything else that actually gives the house "value" or makes it one of the best of the year. Every haunt I've ever worked in and every haunt I've experienced, the best ones didn't rely on gore or blood, and yet there were some rooms that I did NOT want to walk into. Just something to think about.

I seriously did not mean to start a 3 page discussion on whether Terrifier is Torture Porn or not and it was def an offhanded comment, but I'm happy I did haha. Super cool how differently everyone views this franchise, and should be super interesting to see all our opinions on the house too and how they vary.

I very much agree. If DHT wasn't Art, these movies would be trash and they're what keep me going with them. The lingering on the violence is just long enough to drag me from "shocked/scared" to "is this really necessary"? (see: pipe bomb that blows up a bunch of kids).

People were asking who would pay for S&S this year. I'm paying for S&S to avoid the lines of these non-deodorant wearing folks lol.
