Out of curiosity (although I think it is ruled out at this point), did the two-park HHN years have two Assistant PMs, or was that also designated to one person?

One. The two-park years also only had 7 houses, though.

The design process is becoming a little more streamlined, too - at least as far as houses go. The basic structure for a lot of scenes will reappear from year to year, just with new scenic on top of it. The warehouse staircase in Purge was identical to two Walking Dead houses. The subway car in Dead Exposure was identical to Deadtropolis. The design of the slanted floor in Seeds was identical to Forsaken, complete with scare locations (you just walked the opposite direction). There's also the potential of the Sprung Tents or MIB to just get new scenic/paint and creatures for a "new" house with the exact same layout (like the Spawning into Havoc; they didn't even strike that house).

That definitely saves time on the most time-extensive part of house design. It ALSO complicates the actual house production, because it requires coordination in ensuring that key props/scenic pieces are available. If multiple houses have similar design needs, this is even more important.

Time is ungodly short on getting stuff ready for this year. Starting 6 September means everything has to be "show ready" two weeks earlier than last year, and last year they barely finished in time. The extra production assistance is critical in helping smooth that sort of stuff out.

Sucks to hear. Obviously, they need to keep from becoming what Hollywood has allegedly become (just re-using the same scares over and over and over and over). Novelty is what makes the event strong.

I think there's a difference there. Reusing basic set-ups for scares is different than Hollywood using the "trigger, strobe, sound, pop-out" formula.

Believe me, I'll take re-used props over black hallways any day of the week, LOL.

Still, they do need to continue bringing novelty to the event. DE2 in particular had several effects that impressed me (monkey puppets, subway room, moving platform statues), but I maaaaaaay not be the best to judge on such matters.

Universal has the benefit of a remarkably deep catalogue of ideas. When they reuse something, it's something that likely hasn't been seen in 3-4 years. It's like the spine rip or the tunnel. It's not a new prop - or even a new set-up. It's the same stuff year after year. It just "feels" novel because you didn't see it last year (or in any of the other houses).

To be fair, Orlando already uses this formula for a lot of scares.

If you haven't been to Hollywood/ seen the videos of the past couple of years...Orlando doesn't even come close to the amount of times Hollywood reuses this tactic.

There were a lot of puppets and armatures used last year that could easily be re-skinned into new creatures.

I do have a question!

What do they do with all these props after a season of HHN? There seems to be so much extra stuff added for the events that it would be quite a task to house all this stuff.. . Where do they put it all? Do they save it all does some get thrown out? Resold?

I missed this specific post.

Monkey Scare - Zombiegeddon
Subway - Deadtropolis
Moving Platform - Walking Dead
Statues - Wyandot, Dead End, Winter's Night, etc...

Most of them are stored in some warehouses of Sand Lake road. Anything that is deemed unusable is trashed.

So for example like a house specific puppet... the ghost from Poltergeist... Would they just put that in storage in case they decide to have another Poltergeist house or would they scrap it for parts right away? I find that pretty fascinating... Then stuff like basic bedroom furniture/bookshelves/sinks/patio furniture etc... do they just hold that for another generic house too? Or are they going to thrift stores every year? Very neat.

Oh I'm fully aware that the statue trick is nothing new. I was specifically referring to how they combined the statue trick WITH the moving platform--specifically, that one of the zombies on the platform was an actor.

Point remains, novelty is needed.

It's all stored. Most of what you see is years old. Puppets they'll keep because they can potentially be repainted/reskinned for future houses. They'll only purchase what they need each year, and they only need what they don't have.

I’m sure Stranger Things 2 is gonna be mostly reskinned props. They have the Cave/Tunnel sets from AHS Roanoke, Fallen, etc., the Arcade set from Slaughter Sinema, the entire Byers House + Hawkins Lab, the height balcony for the Mindflayer scene from Dead Silence and Gothic, and the puppets from AWiL. Aside from that all they’d need is the pumpkin patch set and the possession sets

Gee, it's not like they have a bunch of rotted pumpkins sitting around. (Sarcasm, obviously.)

. Excited to see Twisted Tradition and the Stranger Things crossover. Speaking of ST2, I’m really curious to see how they handle the kids again. That alone took the house to a whole new level of quality for me since they actually casted real people for the kids

Especially because, this time, they'll be planned from the beginning.

So do we basically know that Stranger Things 2 will be at the event?
