I think people have trouble figuring out how Pokemon can work in a theme park environment. It's not that hard though. Build a new land (ala SWGE) a grand dark ride and some type of interactive show along with an interactive game (like the wands) thru out the land. A restaurant with unique food items and a ton of merch should help pay for the land quite quickly.

*cough* it’s probably going into KidZone around the time the new park opens *cough*

So, Universal’s got 3 out of 5 of the biggest media franchises in the world. One of them being #1.

Just adding my two cents. I work in retail and we have two or three Pokemon shirts that almost always end up on clearance. They just don't sell. We have about 30 Mickey and friends shirts across the store in mens, womens, and kids, and I have never seen a single one on clearance. We have about 15 Mario shirts in mens and boys (more in boys though), and they also sell pretty well too. They don't have the throughput that Mickey does, but I rarely see them on clearance either.

Taking personal experience into account, Pokemon doesn't belong in the top five franchises right now. We sell a lot more Groot shirts, Deadpool shirts, even Bob Ross shirts in mens. The Disney franchises and DC heroes are by far the biggest sellers in branded boys gear, with Minecraft and Mario having pretty decent sales too. The rest are just begging to be touched really.

Yeah a simple personal anecdote doesn’t actually prove much in this instance. Pokémon is easily a huge worldwide brand and sells tons of merchandise. Numbers don’t lie.

The numbers are sourced from wikipedia, and represent total cumulative sales. The Ford Model T is the 3rd highest selling car in history. How many do you think Ford sells now?

I was gonna say, the amount of cultural relevance that Pokemon has in modern day western society is minor and relatively niche.

Pokemon is a proven seller in the merch and the game department. There's a reason the anime, card game, and game series are all going strong

My experience begs to differ. Do you have evidence that the franchise is strong today?

The games sell 12-15 million copies all the time, which is more or less unparalleled for a console exclusive game. The card game is still going strong. Pokemon Go makes 2.5 million dollars a day.

again a random retail store not selling shirts is evidence of nothing.

Two words: Pokémon Go. It seemed like everyone I knew was playing it when it came out.

Context is key though. Around 2016 Nintendo had sold about 21,500,000 3Ds in Japan. Looking at the sales for 2016 what was the top selling game in Japan? Pokemon took the two top spots. 20% of 3DS owners in Japan were playing Pokemon. In the US? It didn't even make the top ten.

Sun and Moon were the fasts selling Nintendo games EVER in North America. They sold 3.7 million copies in 2 weeks.

To say Pokemon has a niche reach in NA is just not true in the slightest

For comparison, Deadpool sold 42 million tickets in the United States alone. I'm sorry but niche is exactly how I would describe the modern Pokemon franchise.

Let's compare when they were for sale at full price, which would've been about 39.99 (not counting key chains); Pokemon Sun/Moon in total (even without tax) earned about 147.9 Million dollars in the United states alone.

Now, there are fees that'd have to be done for retailers that are selling the game, but that's just like with film.

Now, it doesn't hold a candle compared to Deadpool 2's earnings, but that was riding off of a surprise hit for the first, along with the marketing campaign on a domestic level.

In that case Mario is niche as well. Odyssey has only sold 10 million copies.

You can call the franchise niche all you want, but there's a reason Pikachu is one of the most recognizable characters on the planet.
