If I may throw my hat into the ring:

What would be one IP that could fit the “Islands” theme, be a huge IP, sella crap-ton of merch, and attract a huge fan base that’s more popular than Zelda but uk there with Pokemon?

What if the replacement is One Piece?

In an effort to draw more international tourism, a land based on an anime property not going to Japan first would be very interesting.

For the record, I don't think One Piece is the LC replacement, but I don't believe it's an implausible suggestion either. The one thing that Universal Orlando has that the other parks don't is significantly more space to work with. USJ would have to get really creative with their available space, or demolish a whole section of the park if they wanted to add something of that scale. Anime properties certainly have a very large audience here in the United States, so I wouldn't rule them out.

I'm not sure how the licensing works, exactly, but the Warner Bros park in Australia has a land devoted to Oz. It would probably be Wicked, if anything, as it was released through Universal Pictures. The book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is public domain but they would have to be careful not to use any copyrighted material as well.

This is why I still lean towards Zelda, Pokemon, or another domain. Less conflict.

Compared to Pokémon or Zelda, it would actually be easier for them to do Wicked. The movies have already cleverly dodged copyright issues with WB, and like you said, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the rest of Baum's Oz books are public domain.

The Wicked book series also leverages the entirety geography of Oz from Baum’s books, so leveraging Wicked allows them to “own” Wizard of Oz without owing Wizard of Oz.

It’s basically how Disney is able to “own” various fairytales without actually owning the fairytale.

I could maybe see TL being rethemed to One Piece.

Saw a YouTube video that mentioned Monkey's pirate ship would be placed in the lagoon as a weenie (spec or rumor I'm not sure), which would be a unique draw to that fanbase. Also suggested the "rocking boat" ride developed for Creature in EU could be repurposed, and yeah, that makes some sense.

I find it hard to dismiss the IP as too niche when the same park features Marmaduke and Gasoline Alley on one island, Skull Island on another. It would be a gamble for sure but you have to wonder if an ulterior motive of Fan Fest was seeing which IPs punch above their perceived weight class.

I just don’t see them doing something like One Piece in Orlando before Japan.

Like I said, if they really wanted to do an anime land in Orlando. It would have to be Pokémon.

I’m sorry, but I don’t think anyone who makes vacation planning decisions knows what One Piece is. I just looked it up and it looks like all the other Manga out there— there is no appeal to anyone who doesn’t already know what it is.

I’m not a gamer, but I can recognize Nintendo, Zelda, Pokemon. I would absolutely be interested in any of those, or Wicked/Oz, or LOTR any day.

One Piece to me only sounds like a skimpy KFC combo…

Yeah, I don’t think the idea of a One Piece land is preposterous by any means. But it would really surprise me to see a land like it built in the United States before Japan. Not that it has to be this way, but it would be in line with how the stateside parks have considered anime (very little until very recently).

Toon Lagoon was built with the Park 20+ years ago. Skull island is King Kong, so not niche.

Just ask yourself what the lowest profile IP that has gotten a land since Hogsmede. That's the floor when discussing what IP's get a land. It's a pretty high bar.

If Pokemon ends up at Islands, that park would certainly end up with the strongest IP lineup of any Universal park. Themed lands based on Jurassic Park, Marvel, Harry Potter, Dr. Suess, and Pokemon? It's a lineup that is hard to top.

I believe if we get Oz, it fits far better in Studios than anywhere else. I believe Pokepark, Oz, F&F Orlando Drift, and BTTF would be an unbelievable improvement for USF; but it seems like they want to spread those first two lands throughout the resort instead.

I had to look it up as well. My first through was a swimsuit although I knew that couldn't possible be it.

This is why I hope it doesn't go into LC. Pokemon really needs to go into USF where it can be the main draw to the park. I'd also love them to have more space and LC feels very boxed in. I'd rather Pokemon go into Springfield+Animal Actors spot or the (sad, but inevitable one day) MIB+FF spot.

Ya know, if Pokemon does come to LC, the SLOP ride system and attraction layout may be nice for this. Compact building with queue on the lower level, high capacity dark ride through various biomes with tons of AAs packed in there, etc. That would free up more of the LC space for other things.

Brian at ParkLore (formerly ThemeParkTourist) made his blue-sky buildouts of Islands and Epic Universe and that was his lineup for Islands, plus Zelda. His lineup for Epic was adding Wicked and LotR. I don't think it's much of a contest as to which of those two hypothetical IP lineups is more lucrative--so naturally, I would prefer his proposed lineup for Epic (though including a raptor version of Alien Encounter in his Islands lineup makes it close).
