Some of my favorite pictures I've ever taken were night shots at IoA back in 2003. I have always thought it's one of the best lit parks at night, too bad it's been so rarely open after dark!

Random question here that I didn't want to start a whole new thread for:

Really want to level up my HHN photo game this year so went looking for photos on Flickr that I like and I stumbled on Mark Walter. And the dude is just getting stunning photo after stunning photo. Like what do I have to do to get my shots like that? I went stalking though his camera settings to find out and it all looks pretty milquetoast to me until I get to this:



Oh well there you go, he's got his flash on! I lurked through the old HNN forums and I see lots of people talking about bringing in flashes.

Curious: did that used to be okay? I know nowadays whenever people use flash, they get scolded (for very good reason!). Was it just the wild west then or did these "famous"/big name HHN photogs just get a blind eye turned to them by actors because they knew each other?

Back then, it was a different time, but I think he was working with the actors and had permission, too.

Also, I think he was controlling how bright the flash was, and with an external light already in the actor's face, it wasn't a jarring photo to take for them.

It’s hard to remember a time when the event was “chill” enough that you could get that kind of time and space with a performer haha.
