Correct me if I'm wrong but the "Flash (on, fired)" designation on Flickr would say that even if he was using an external flash yes? If he was at the event in any media capacity, he could've been using an external flash with a soft diffusion and bouncing the light which wouldn't be as harsh.

EDIT: Just looked at the photos you linked and they definitely look a bit staged so maybe he is a TM or is friends of one?
