I still think some sort of Victorian, Steam-punky observatory will be the icon

I actually like this idea more. Would love to see a Discovery Bay-esque Main Street. With the colossus statue, it seems limited to Greece, which has already been covered at Port of Entry.

I'm leaning that way as well and it makes perfect sense given that there will be different worlds to explore.

My only concern is that it might seem like a copy of Planet Hollywood Observatory or Space Mountain in DLP with the steam punk look.

For the hub, I think I would like a mix of Gaudi's Barcelona meets Forest Elf Kingdom meets a Neo Noir Victorian steampunk. Instead of Metal its rock and wood but at the same time industrial...almost like the hub is a living thing.

Eh. Like 1% of people going to the park have any idea what DLP's Space Mountain looks like, and I don't think Planet Hollywood is iconic enough to matter

An interesting possibility for the new park?

Maybe something like the Cloud City from Bioshock Infinite

The end of that game (and entire series) blew my mind.

Sounds like direct transportation between the parks and hotels.

Autonomous driving on public roads just isn't there yet but on private roads it's good to go. This sounds like it's an in-park high tech train or people mover over public transit.

I was thinking private roads with bridges to cross public roads direct to hotels.

Really it doesn't matter who owns the roads, it's about obstacles and unpredictable situations. While cities may have many oddities with situations that don't quite fit design standards, the paths between Universal properties are pretty straight forward and can be programed into the algorithms. In the time it would take to design, approve, and build an additional network of private roads with overpasses driver-less vehicles will become much more mainstream. And that stays closer to the price and limitations of other tracked options anyway. We have driver-less vehicles on the road today, they've just been scaled back to be extra timid and cautious in situations where the risks are not quite understood yet. That is the big jump from driver-assisted to full-auto, now it's just collecting data and fine tuning.

All of the proposed uses for this patent are for transporting guests within a theme park.

More oriented towards the Disney 'scooter crowd'. Universal's demographic seems pretty fit for the most part and probably would never use this. An in park system is kind of the epitome of laziness and sloth.

This tech would be great in airports to replace the electric golf cart guys taking people to terminals.

FW concept video...

Universal wouldn't be able to patent the idea of a driver-less vehicle that picks people up from one location and drops them at another location. IDK if they do have realistic plans for this patent or if it's just to block competition from the idea, which is more involved than a bus or taxi.

Or did anyone seem to think this is Universals way to take people and transport them to other worlds....that was the biggest question? How are we to get around? The vehicles could be your portal.

Which... what if the “hub” is actually a massive moving highway of people mover vehicles delivering guests from world to world?

I kind of figured we’d be using our legs to get around.

1) This shouldn't be a Disney vs Universal point
2) In park transit solutions are more than "laziness and sloth"
