Just wanted to share my overall thoughts for this year's Fan Fest. I think it's a winner. Operational issues aside with the Sailor Moon meet n' greet, I'm breaking the options down into a few categories.

Subjective wins are:

Sailor Moon - My wife has been a fan her entire life and she's gotten me into it recently, too. Have been loving the original anime so far and am nearly 150 episodes in. I do wish the show were in 3D (it's clearly better if it were) but I just think it's sort of a miracle to get to experience it at all, even if it doesn't come with all the bells and whistles it may have had in Japan. Saw it twice because I'm hyped on the show atm and it's so stinkin' cute/fun.

Jurassic Park - I know they're just meet n' greets and photo ops but I loved it to death both nights. Huge fan of the franchise (especially the early stuff) and just being able to wander the area and experience the characters and old photo ops with virtually no wait or effort was just wonderful. Really made me feel like a kid again when I used to take goofy photos with the Spinosaurus when it used to be in the Lower Lot or the former Raptor just outside of the entrance to the old Jurassic Park ride.

Universal Monsters x Scooby-Doo - Loved it, loved it, loved it. Mostly the Universal Monsters part (again, big fan). There was a tiny bit of a "learning curve" involved, sure, but once you know the lay of the land and know what's going on, it's really great. Second night was way better than our first (thanks in part to Universal's team making minor changes through the course of the event) but I feel like arriving for the event just to wander these sets and vibe is worth it. The actors here are killing it and you can really tell Universal has them out in force for this experience, which didn't go unnoticed with us. I wish the merch for this experience were a bit better, but that's about the only nitpick that I have with it.

Objective wins are:

Dungeons & Dragons - I am not a fan of the franchise. Like, at all. Still, it's hard to argue against the Production value of the walk through experience. The sets and figures are all very impressive. I had fun despite having never wanted to partake in anything D&D related. Was it good enough to get me into it? My friends wish, but no.

Forbidden Forest - I like Harry Potter but certainly not as much as I once did (mostly because of all the JK Rowling nonsense). I have fond memories of it from when I was a kid and also being there for the opening weekend of Hogsmeade in Orlando but otherwise can pretty much take or leave anything Potter Universal throws at me these days. That said, this was really well done. Much better than I was expecting it to be. I think being there in the dark helped but I almost couldn't believe I was just meandering the old outdoor extended queue for Forbidden Journey, the transformation worked that well. Did it once, did not feel the need to do it again (same as D&D) but can totally see why folks are waiting in long lines to experience it).

One Piece - Again, not really a super fan and I have no desire to sit through 1,000+ episodes to become one. I have a passing knowledge of the franchise from watching a few episodes with friends or it being on while we're having dinner in a ramen shop or two but I once again respect the quality of the product here. A fantastic use of the Waterworld venue and a fun show (MUCH better than Purge) and I agree that the fans who fill the arena for this one really help bring something special extra to it. We were lucky enough to watch it with the Express Pass (which means we got front row, center seats) and all the effects work really well when sitting there. That said, seeing the show from the side on YouTube, some of the effects were a little less believable, so I think where you sit has an affect on the show.

Failure:

Yoshis in Super Nintendo World - Look, I'm a big Nintendo guy. You'll find me defending them and purchasing their product probably until the day I die despite whatever bone-headed decisions they make. Maybe classifying this offering as a "failure" is a bit harsh, since it's basically exactly what is being advertised but I dunno, as much as I'm a Nintendo guy, I'm not a Yoshi one. I already don't think the meet n' greets Super Nintendo World offers are all that great (there is something really mechanical and lifeless about the way the performers are forced to move in the provided suits) so a bunch of different colored versions of a character I don't really feel anything for isn't really even an offering, to me at least. The idea behind the scavenger hunt is cute but after seeing the booklet online, it's something I could have filled/figured out without so much as even needing to lift my head given how familiar I already am with the land. Scooby's puzzle isn't rocket science, either, but I feel more effort went into that one. I guess your mileage will vary on this one but even as a Nintendo super fan, I took one look around inside and said, "Nah, I'm good".

The Food:

Wanted to touch on this one briefly. We tried a lot. Fan Fest exclusive stuff we had was: Luffy's Meat on the Bone, Franky's Loco Moco Burger, every One Piece-themed drink, Moon Scepter Churro, Sailor Scout cupcake, Sailor Moon Bento Box, both Sailor Moon-themed drinks, Tuxedo Mask Milkshake, Three Broomsticks Scotch Egg, Scooby Snacks, Raptor Bites and Carnivore Meatball Sub from Jurassic Cafe', Cockatrice Hot Wings/Gelatinous Cube from the D&D tavern and uh.. yeah, that's it but it's still a lot. If you asked me which were worth getting at all, it's the following:

-Franky's Loco Moco Burger (tots were a tad disappointing/overcooked but the burger was good enough to make up for it)
-Luffy's Monkey Punch
-Zoro's Santoryu Strike
-Moon Scepter Churro
-Sailor Scout Cupcake
-Moonlight Love Sparkle
-Raptor Bites (Jurassic Cafe')
-Carnivore Meatball Sub (steak fries made up for the aforementioned overcooked tots!)

Everything else after that was just "meh" or not great. But the above offerings were good to me. We skipped the Yoshi drink because we tried the only flavor we would have wanted while we were in Epic Universe last year.

Phew, that about wraps it up from me. This event was unique for us because how much value you'll get out of it is sort of predicated on what fandoms are featured. I looked again at the lineup for last year and am reminded why I never went because there wasn't enough I was interested in. Actually, there was basically nothing for me last year. Fingers crossed for next year!

Thats crazy that the OG Sailor Moon had soooo many episodes, I watched the remake of the Anime (has not filler and updated animated) the remake Anime has 39 episodes and 4 movies....so interested to see what the Filler is like in the OG show.

If you ever do want to give the show a Try the Live Action is very good and captures the spirit of the manga but the characters are more grounded. I liked Sanji but him and Nami are for me even better in Live action when they are allowed to show more emotions and be more human then always doing a gag about Finding woman hot or wanting money. Also next year Netflix is having the Remake One Piece anime and it will be much quicker with no filler and some amazing art

Fair enough on Yoshi but the mini moment gets like insane crowds for how small it is and the lines for the characters move at lightening speed compared to last year so for me its a win...but agree we need more. The Drone show, Bowser or like all the princesses or something more.

But glad overall you had a good time

I originally tried watching Crystal many years ago as my first foray into Sailor Moon. Hated it. Could not get into it. But the 90's anime has me hooked. I love their characterizations and interactions with each other so much more. I also prefer the old art style over the sanitized look of Crystal. The shorter show may be more faithful to the source material but that doesn't make it better in my eyes. Basically, the old show has way more "life" in it despite the filler*.

Regarding One Piece, I just have zero interest in getting really into it. No shade on any super fans. But even if it were shortened greatly (anime or live-action), I still feel like it'd just be one of those things that's fun to look at in passing but not really get all that into. The fandom feels like a bit much, too. I've already got my own plate full with so many others, hah.

Yeah, the Yoshi thing is a subjective thing for sure. My brother was big on Yoshi Story and plays as him in Super Smash Bros so he was stoked to see it during the brief time we were in there. Just not my character or cup of tea. But see, that would all change if they brought like, DK over from Epic Universe or somehow got a Rosalina costume going or something.

*Also editing to mention that I prefer the ViZ media dub to whatever they were doing in the original 90's take. I get some people grew up with those voices and love 'em but that version of the original show does not do it for me.

It was mentioned on the forum the UBE ip was going to a rebranding, and they were going to go retro but backed out last minute due to said rebranding. To my knowledge TMNT is sort of rebranding with TMNT Mutant Mayhem getting a new short film (and I guess more sequels?) so that would make sense. The two movies couldn't be any more different.

TMNT Mutant Mayhem:

TMNT 1990:

To really get the turtles in real life I imagine they'd make suits like the movie, but more modern and breathable for such long shifts. Maybe we'd get paired with an April O' Neil actress after bumping into a Foot Clan Hideout and we're guided as the Turtles fight our way out.

If this is true, I really hope it makes it next year. Me and the person that went to Fan Fest for both years mentioned that the event is super retro oriented, so it'd be a perfect fit.

I am happy to report that Scooby snacks are now sold in the snack shop in the upper lot!

I'm glad to see it, I think it definitely takes the edge off the carts during FFN. Poster also makes me hope they stay past FFN. It'd be a nice move considering Scooby Doo is already a meet and greet and it wouldn't be far from the M&G spot.

Would be nice if it was also in Mel's in addition to the sandwich (which I'm still very unsure of trying)

There's another Scooby Snack stand by the tables where you pick up the mystery guides and pens, just the boost one would need for mystery solving

I dunno if it was said already, but I learned the final showtime for the raptors in the JW fan zone is at 11:15PM. Wish that was posted on the wait time screens and whatnot since I haven't gotten to see it since opening night.

I started with D&D, went to Jurassic area to talk to characters and saw some of the show before heading up and doing Sailor Moon then over to One Piece for the first show, then got lucky and HP was 20 mins and took less then that, then off to the Yoshis and got one picture and saw them dance sadly the green yoshi line was too long, so I walked onto the Scooby Tram and was there for 20 hours....saw all the monsters and characters, saw the show then saw the last One Piece and they didn't close it until 3 mins before the show, then went downstairs to Jurassic for a character interaction or two and got on the last D&D which had 6 people in it

Has anyone been able to get a recording of the FFN equivalent to the "opening scaremony" that plays right as it hits 7:30? It consists of an audio montage of all represented IPs, and I've yet to get a clear recording of it due to start of the evening priorities on my most recent visits.

Throwing out, but since 2023--Universal Studios Hollywood has been having a continual relationship with the Jim Henson Creature Workshop. In what started as the statue animatronics for Behind The Screams, it has since blossomed and branched to include Chucky from HHN2024, Xanathar from D&D 2025/2026, and FNAF for HHN 2025.

Could be possible that say, Universal wanted to work with Nickelodeon and Paramount to bring the classic 90's Turtles to FFN as a walkthrough experience, to the point of having Jim Henson Creature Workshop involved. But as a result of differences in creative decisions, TMNT was pulled and they couldn't get a replacement IP in time.

If that would be the case, one has to wonder how it fell apart; and if things might be still mendable post 2026. I'd love to see what modern JHCW could do with the turtles .

My understanding is this was not the FFN IP that was lost. Possible TMNT was also explored early on. Unfortunately not at liberty to say what the cut one was right now.

I think I've got a review of my own ready now that I've given the event a go 4 times, so here goes on the main stuff so far:

General Things
  • I really don't know what were they thinking making the event start later and end earlier than HHN/last year this time. I think that really stacks unfavorably with how hard it is to do everything in one night, and each night I've gone, I've had to skip out on at least one experience (though the easiest choice past opening night was HP). It kind of makes the lack of one in the TWD space look like a blessing in disguise.

  • The anime M&Gs eat up so much of the night if you try to do both SM and OP. And for OP, I wish it was communicated a bit clearer about which Pirates would be out. It's kind of a bummer that which ones you see is a toss-up. Last time, Luffy was with Zoro and Nami when I got there thanks to show exit priority, but they swapped out when I was close, which sucked since I haven't met them in the new spot or let alone with Luffy despite meeting them last year. Though the time before my latest one, which was after the showtimes for the OP Show were adjusted, it now seems getting to the M&G after the final show's not a good idea. Line was closed for the night by then, and even then it wasn't all pirates anyway. Issues aside, both meet and greets were a blast to do, even with light knowledge of the source material.
Experiences/Shows (Going in order of what I experienced on Opening Night)
  • Sailor Moon - Despite having little knowledge of the source material, it was still very enjoyable, and I loved how vibrant the theater effects were, as well as the projection mapping. However, as I expected, it was once again hard to fully take them in (especially the first time around) with being forced to read the subtitles as to not miss the dialogue (though I will say it wasn't as bad this time, but that's probably because any time an attack or transformation is called out, it's spoken in Engrish). The issues with subs only in a 4D ride still remain and that's all I'll say since I know we've been over it. Still holding out/gunning for these to be dubbed in the future, and I really hope anyone here who feels the same has been throwing their hat in the ring for that, be it on the surveys or even at guest services. Though considering I did see little kids who were SM fans in line for her meet and greet when I did that, I can only wonder if they had trouble with the subs too, especially after someone here mentioned that with their little ones.

  • DND - Seemed like it had better soundproofing and mic usage than last year's? Might be just me but I'm pretty sure it was the case, and it was really nice to be able to hear the live performers more clearly. Though I regret doing it during early access where it was a 30 minute wait. It had a much lower wait the rest of the night. Anyway, while it's nice to see it refined, I'd be more happy if we get something different in that space for year 3.

  • Jurassic World: A Journey Through the Eras - It was very fun despite the simplicity, and no wait into this thing is a huge boon. Though on opening night was hard to see the raptor show from a distance if you're not part of the immediate crowd. I have yet to see the show since they added the monitors to make it easier, but as mentioned in an earlier post, I really wish the showtimes in this place were communicated better, since I've missed it all other times. Other than that, this has been a place I've been trying to do each night, and it's thanks to how fun the face characters are too in particular; I can't get over how well the casting was once again. Nedry and Ian were easily the best in my opinion, and I've had different interaction ideas each time. Managed to sneak in a reference to "Driving all the way the work on a Saturday" to Nedry, and most recently getting the clever idea to ask them all about the Yoshis using the SNW pamphlet with varying results. Ian Malcom took the cake intially thinking it's a "Cartoonasaurus" and then comparing the colored Yoshis to nerds candy, while Nedry basically disliked them as much as any other dino. Special mention from opening night goes to Nedry improvising as soon as the Raptor show ended and he said "I went to the bathroom, what happened!?"

  • Colorful Yoshi Celebration - Felt much more smoother than last year's Yoshi event, and the Yoshis' entrance was very cute and I loved the usage of the Yoshi's Story theme (which I presume is from Yoshi's Adventure since I hadn't heard it before). Though I didn't know you could basically head right for the reward photo op if you figure out the scavenger hunt password (which is "Power up"). As a result, only met the colored Yoshis on opening night, and the line for the reward photo op was too long by the time I figured it out the first time. Subsequent visit, speedran the password and got out quickly close to the start of the event. I think I've gotten my fill, and it's really nice how you can meet the colored Yoshis in one fell swoop. That being said, I now see why there's only four other colors, given that they're positioned at different parts of the land (and I also later noticed that Red Yoshi never really had much of a presence on previous Yoshi merch from the park, so in hindsight the writing was on the wall for the other colored Yoshis).

  • Scooby-Doo was really fun, and it was nice to walk through Little Europe in the process. Loved how the atmosphere leaned into the classic Scooby-Doo vibes and humor, and it was fun seeing Mystery Inc interact with the monsters, and I do like the revisit value with the different culprits each night. So far, I've seen Max Flash and Arty be the culprits. Here's hoping I can see the other two on my final gos before watching a video. Didn't realize it until going there that it's really nice to see Scooby-Doo get some kind of standalone attraction at the park for once.

  • One Piece Grand Pirate Show - I think everyone praising it took the words out of my mouth; despite having very light knowledge of the source material (and also deterred a bit by how long it runs), I still enjoyed it a lot, and it was amazing seeing how much new stuff they could do with the existing Waterworld set. This, I can see being the regular reoccurring thing at FFN, though I could see them coming up with a new story each year.

  • Forbidden Forest - Definitely exceeded my expectations for something put together in the extended queue for FJ. The darkness definitely aids in keeping things hidden and the Hippogriff animatronic(?) looked impressive. It was also surreal going backwards in the FJ main queue for it.
Food
So far, I've had these:
  • Luffy's Meat on a Bone - My favorite so far, that I had it twice. It tastes like a crispy meatball, and the seasoning adds a lot of flavor. The rice compliments it, but as someone with a low spice tolerance, it was almost too much for me. That said...
  • Sanji's Seafood Rice - It was nice until I ended up taking in the spice, which was so bad for me I couldn't finish the dish. Though it's on me for not catching that the food was gonna be spicy, and I'm not sure if they could have removed it for my order. I don't think I'd like the katsu for that matter.
  • Yoshi Smoothie - Had Mango Banana. I'm glad it tasted more like a smoothie, but I'm still bugged by how the "whip cream" is once again a bunch of frosting. It made me unable to finish my drink.
  • Sailor Moon Bento Box - I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the whole dish. Easily my second favorite so far for the quality and how filling it is.
And that's it so far. Overall, still solid and was able to have fun each night, but there's definitely some to be desired, mainly with the hours this time and how much that limits things when you're on the move. I can only hope that this year's just a sophomore slump in that regard and next year manages to be more refined in what I think still needs to be addressed.

I agree that going backwards through the FJ queue was an odd treat

Last Friday was my best night, I wont top it things just worked out

Some Notes from last weekend

Thursday seem to have different times for a few things like how there are 3 One Piece shows and not 4 and the One Piece meet and greets seem to start at 6:30 some days and others at 7 PM.

HP does have some rare times the line goes under 30 mins, so hopefully this weekend the same happens so people can see this attraction

Also note, the anime characters while I love just eat up too much time. When I don't meet them I can easily do all attractions and meet the Yoshi's and Jurassic characters, so the issue is with how popular the anime characters are compared to the other meetable characters. Last Thursday the line for the 6 PM Sailor Moon was cut off before 5 PM....meaning if you got in at 6 PM if your lucky you could meet her at 7:30 PM

The Invisible man now looks out the Window( near where the show happens for the monsters near the fountain, fan and Mic ) It doesn't happen all the time but enough where if you are around the area for a while you should spot him

Also while there are 4 suspects for the Reveal show, only 3 of the characters seem to the Phantom and one is just there to throw people off

The DJ was doing some Kop Demon Hunter the other night but just no one is there....there is an Anime Cover band coming to citywalk right now. No idea why they didn't try to get that band for Fan fest...you put up a sign sing Anime Cover Songs featuring One Piece and think that would have soaked up some crowds

The Mario and Yoshi Meet and Greet seems to have a long line past 8 PM, so just a heads up if your trying to get a photo with them

Will be there this Friday night! Getting excited, not only for FFN but to be at Universal in general, it has been kind of a long time since our last visit. Me, my wife, and the kiddo, gonna be a blast. My wife handled the tickets and I didn't realize it was gonna be the second to last night of the event. We got Express because that's just sorta what we always do (kiddo occasionally has a hard time regulating emotion so waiting too long in a line sometimes means a visit to meltdown city), but now I'm thinking it might be dead and might not have needed it? Idk what do you guys think.

There are a few things Express can be good for but mostly HP

HP gets long lines and only rarely lowers under 30 mins

One Piece you do get first dips on seats but like in theory you could save a seat for someone

D&D is not always a long wait but can be over 30 mins, so it can help there if you don't rope drop it at EA or at the your night with it

Scoody-Doo normally doesn't get a long line but can the longest I've wait is 20 mins mostly its under that with a few exceptions

But Jurassic, Yoshi and the meet and greets it doesn't matter what ticket you have...and Sailor moon show is normally also about the same time for you if you have express or not but express does get into the pre show first
