According to WDWMagic, Space Mountain has a massive rebuild on the way, announcement coming soon (maybe at D23).

I’m glad they’re going with the retrack route. It’s the original, so it deserves a touch-up…not a full blown replacement that Tokyo is doing.

I will kinda miss the bobsled-style seating, but I could see them pushing for side-by-side seating like DL has. I don’t blame them as that would literally double capacity. I feel like it would make things slightly trickier given that style of seating would require slightly larger track and bigger clearances.

This is overdue. Glad to see the OG Space Mountain will likely get some love soon.

I've been hearing some very bad things on the WDWMagic forums.

Rumors include:

A new building (no more iconic Space Mountain building)

New queue (Classic SM BGM gets the ax, as does Star Tunnel)

Vekoma

Faster speed (potentially as fast as 60mph)

Completely different track lay-out

New load station/stations

New cars

Single track

A launch

Peoplemover would also go down for a few months or longer.

I want the same treatment for DL’s Space Mountain.

*ahem* this would count as a full-blown replacement, just so you know.

I wouldn't hate something like what they're doing in the Tokyo remodel. Otherwise, (x) doubt.

Losing the music would be an L, but the queue is dated to hell and back.

The company that does basically every Disney coaster? Checks out. Fine by me and unsurprising.

Doubt, but neat.

Might be a hot take, but go for it. I always have a blast, but I'm also not here to pretend the layout is anything special when it's essentially a wild mouse. It can absolutely be improved upon.

Sweet. Also wildly dated and could be dramatically improved upon.

Not a huge fan, but it's also not like they duel or anything dramatic. If it means a longer ride, I'm intrigued.

Bummer, but so it goes.

-------

Overall, I'll be sad to see a long downtime, but the ride is beyond overdue for a retrack. I mean, my god, they had one planned 18 years ago and cancelled it. If they can update the theming at the same time, even better. I can't even begin to pretend that the current theming is up-to-par with Disney's capability for a space coaster.

They better keep the layout. Not just because it's more fun than Disneyland's layout, but because of the historical significance of being the first and original Space Mountain*.

And removing the music loops should be a non-starter. We've already lost too much evocative theme park music.

*Not that I expect Disney cares much about that last part, given that they're in the process of gutting the only WDW attraction Walt Disney directly oversaw...

Genuine question. Should they keep the OG layout in perpetuity, essentially? Or is there a certain amount of time when it becomes acceptable to change the iconic old stuff? Curious where the line is for the true fans of maintaining the park's past.

I see no reason a throwback layout is inherently a bad thing at Space Mountain, especially when there's an ultra-modern new coaster that was just added right next to it (and another modern sci-fi based coaster was just added at Epcot, too). Space Mountain should retain its retro charms.

But the track absolutely needs to be rebuilt, in any case.

I think they can play with the layout a bit as long as they keep the "bobsled" dual track experience.

Yeah, the ride needs a re-track (not a new layout) but that's really about it. I'm of the opinion "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". cal.

My worry is losing the 70s coaster design. I don't see them adapting a two wide into this layout and design, it's just too much to change. I'm hopeful but anxious, which hysterically is different than my COP take!

Well, what's the importance of perserving it? SM is Disney's first indoor coaster and the first computer controlled coaster. I think the layout is different than anything else on property so it offers something unique (wild mouse vs mine cart for example). But I think the layout is good! It's fun and has some surprise drops and is worth saving. If it wasn't good and didn't have any historical context I'd say rip it out.

I know my meme seems to contradict what I just posted earlier, but while I would prefer they would keep the classic layout with a new track, I would be fine if they went the Tokyo route.

With WDW having so many coasters, I would prefer the classic layout be kept and let DL have the Tokyo Space Mountain. They're long overdue for something thrilling. If they do indeed go the Tokyo route here, then fine by me.

How much of peoples love for the current MK Space Mountain is based on nostalgia, vs reality and objectivity?

Is it actually a good coaster currently? How do people who ride it for the first time in 2026 feel about it?

Disney needs to think long term here, and towards new guests that they want to turn into repeat guests.

The drops are really the thing, especially in comparison to Disneyland's layout, which felt like it was 90% turns to me (that's hyperbole, but it gets the point across). Still a good ride, but held up to Magic Kingdom's version, I think MK's is much more dynamic (even with the nostalgia goggles removed).

And hopefully someone on the team realizes what makes the layout special. I don’t see why it can’t be a full redo, and still contain an exciting coaster with drops.

Just seems like the entire internet is lit up with hysteria, over something we know zero about, for a ride we all knew was up for a major redo.
