I hope Zelda is great...but no blue when you have a company making you billions on movies you'd risk it....like Uniersal would be able to turn Zelda into something close if not a Billion without trying...but you risk it on a Sony...Live action film. Makes no sense to me

It would suck if they do get to a Smash Movie and Zelda and Link can't show up

Knowing Nintendo’s lawyers I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a clause that lets Nintendo use animated versions of Zelda characters for cameos or ensemble roles outside of the live action movies. Heck, it might even be simpler than that and they have a deal like Disney has with Spider-Man.

I hope, like my god what a fumble if not

Because unless something bad really happens...the hype for Mario is real and this next movie is an easy Billion

We have Spoilers Tags, so if people want to talk about things we can just use those for the first week

Because I'm sure I will have a lot to say after seeing the post credit scenes but also don't want to ruin the magic for anyone else.

The first film was also not reviewing well either

It does suck....that we can't get better films story wise (nothing insane...but look at the Puss and Boots the Last wish...its a family film with a great story and amazing lessons) but most likely most gamer fans and kids will love it...and it will make over a billion

Illumination seems to just want to make the most simple films ever....which works out once again for the box office and memes but....besides not many films I'd say are that great

Despicable Me 1 and Migration are the two films from them I'd say are truly great

Then you have the First Mario Movie which is good but has some flaws, the Lorax which....I don't know why I like it but I don't hate it, and some off the minion and DM films fall into good as well and I know many people like Sing 1 and SLOP of Pets

But mostly....they make films that appeal to kids...and people who drink a lot and just want dumb fun

I agree that just because something is a "kids" movie doesn't mean it shouldn't hold artistic value or be intellectually stimulating. Look at some of the great "kids" movies of the 90's which are still culturally relevant because they told great stories and clearly had a lot of love and craft sewn into them.

That being said: I cannot wait to indulge in a couple "extra-curriculars" and watch a late night showing of this Friday night.

Saw it last night. If you liked the first one, you'll like this one.
It did not do a "FNaF 2" IMO.

Does it do anything different? Not really.
Does it swing for the fences in any regard? Not really.
Does it service the brand? Yes.
Does it keep you entertained? Yes.
By my count, it does its job - so i don't know what other people necessarily expected to happen here...

I have two points i will note below in spoilers that i don't think would be giving away anything but don't want to spoil anything for anyone regardless.
1. they VASTLY improved the music. if anyone isn't familiar with the horrible needle drops on the first movie, they ORIGINALLY had an entire score you can listen to online. Brian Tyler did an amazing job and they absolutely demolished his work by doing nonsensical pop songs during sequences that should've AND COULD'VE had Mario's ICONIC music. The founder of illumination FORCED them into the movie and made it noticeably worse as a result.
the second movie has ONE needle drop and it's SHORT and FUNNY AND near the beginning of the movie so ONCE IT'S DONE you can move on and enjoy yourself. if y'all weren't aware, check out #releasetheTylerCut of the original movie.

2. the ANIMATION STYLE is also not just improved but experimental in a fun and creative way. There is an anime sequence. There is an 8-bit sequence. There are several story-book sequences. There is a hand-puppet sequence (that's animated but LOOKED like it could've been real at first). There is a LOT of great stylized action and fighting and flying going on. It alludes to Smash Bros in MULTIPLE fight scenes with character's moves. It alludes to other Mario games even more literally than that (one scene will stand out near the end). What charm the first movie taps into for only brief moments this one brings IN SPADES.
Everything in me wants to say it IS a better movie, but it does have SOME downgrades I'll save for another discussion. One of my favorite Nintendo characters is brought to the screen in near-perfect clarity, so i can't really complain after feeling the dumb smile spread across my face while watching it last night. lol

I'm happy its a fun time....If I enjoy it then cool

But people want it to be not just a fun film but have a message like Puss in Boots, Aladdin, studio ghibli films Etc. With the current studio I just doubt it happens but I would not be against the movies being both fun rides with good messages and emotional moments like other well loved animated movies

Anyone who goes into a Sing or Despicable Me movie expecting a life-changing narrative might want to seek professional help. lol Puss in Boots 2 was GOOD, but it's not ART like Studio Ghibli; And neither is this nor anything Illumination has made.

Sure, there can be metaphorical meaning found in a film, but it's a kids movie at the end of the day and it's meant to be a product and sell toys. Sing tells you 'never give up on your dreams' and Despicable Me tells you 'everyone can find a home (and a family) somewhere.' The first Mario Bros. movie's message was more or less 'heroes can come from anywhere' and this one's message is pretty bare-bones 'family will always be family.'

This studio knows its audience, they saw that with the first one.
I'd expect this movie to be just as financially successful as the first.

I more or less agree with all this. Despite not being a particularly deep film, I did enjoy it a lot. It's pretty consistent in quality with the first film, so whatever someone thought of original is probably going to carry over here, good or bad.

Agree to Disagree but Puss in Boots 2 for me is art

It does an amazing job showing anxiety, its about not fearing death but respecting the life you have, and also while more common the found family and not needing a wish to be be happy, but to see the things around you as what you already want but are taking something for granted.

Along with having having one of the funniest Villains ever, and one of the best modern antagonists, great action scenes with beautiful animation and great music

If you can make a deeper then surface level movie about Puss in Boots then they can with Mario but....its Illumination and they clearly just want to make fun, colorful movies with the most basic plots you can. It works for money but I know we could get a deeper Mario film

I'm going into this with expectations of it being just fun but there are writers and directors out there that could make just as fun of films with deeper messages and moments

Hey man, i'm all for a difference of opinion and i'm glad you feel that way about that movie so strongly. Like i said, i think it's GOOD and i ain't gonna knock against it, but (as an art school student with a BFA) my own opinion about "art" is too muddled to get into on a forum about a kids movie that is anything but (Mario). lol

My point is just to say that Illumination more specifically knows their brand. They know their goal. I don't think any of their movies will ever be #deep. And -i'm gonna level with you here- I don't want the Mario movies to be deep. This is a much more convoluted conversation about character and i'm going to summarize it by saying i don't think i WANT to see Mario depicted as anything but a generic plumber bro who rolls with the punches and yells wahoo when he's excited. I don't need to see him have a life-accurate panic attack so i can relate my real-world anxieties to him; I don't go to these movies to relate, i go to these movies to dissociate. lol

While it works for some movies, i don't think it would work for Mario and that's fine; Sometimes an animated kids movie can just be an animated kids movie, especially if that was the goal the entire time.
