I really like Craig Gillespie as a director, so I'm not letting the mixed-negative reviews dampen my excitement. Seeing her tomorrow!

I am seeing it tonight......but....I just don't get how DC keeps letting this happen. Like your building a new universe, why even make the film if it doesn't seem like any passion is put into the project. Why not just do another hero you have a story for? Anyway, going in for another movie that will I guess just disappoint me

don't understand why James Gunn is trying so hard to make Supergirl seem so unlikable. Grace Randolph on YouTube had a review saying how Supergirl is just unlikable and like, rude.
not sure why Gunn does this. she doesn't have to.be happy all the time, but this isn't great either.

I assumed it was to make her arc from rough to more a hero

I’ll find out tonight how it ends up, I’m hoping I like it but after mandalorian and Toy Story…I feel like I’m just not loving main stream films that much any more.

Like it’s insane to me that backrooms is the film I’ve had the most fun with and these movies have all this talent and money but make 7/10 films

The CW Supergirl by Melissa Benoist was criticized heavily for being too well-adjusted and optimistic and not being angsty and dark like the original comics self.

The 1950-ish Supergirl was a clone of Superman for girls. Superman, of course, is "Truth, Justice, and the American Way". Apple pie and all that. In the edgy 90's, some fellow super heroes even called him the Big Blue Boy Scout.

Tom King, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, wrote a story that really differentiated her from Supes. This movie is loosely based on that.

They just didn't want a female version of the same hero.

I'm looking forward to seeing it this weekend, hope it works out. Between Creature Commandos, Peacemaker (and Vigilante!), Suicide Squad, and this, we have the strangest (and best?) collection of superbeings ever. I hope it works.

Its not like the worst movie but....its just kind of a wasted film

Like its just another ok DC film like the flash and what not.

There are times there are cool ideas and then it just becomes kind of just another Super Hero film but in space with not much to really do in a way that is interesting

I think if they just made Super girl in space gets to do a bunch of cool things because she is not on earth and she can go all out....would have just been a better use of the film if your not going to make a movie with an amazing story then make it just a fun movie showing off what the powers can do

The back story stuff here is interesting enough but because of how they frame things for me the emotions of it doesn't work well.

Also a watered down Lobo is in the film....he is watered down not because its not rated R but because he's a fan favorite character and won't let him be a bounty hunter after money.

Anyway would be surprised if this makes much money I'd say go see He Man if you want a better dumb fun action film and hope the next Superman can get people hyped for this because for me this new DC just isn't good enough to need to be a thing yet
Creature Commandos was a great show, Peace Maker season 2 was for sure weaker then season 1. The last Superman was fine but still I think My adventures with Superman is more interesting then whats going on here.

Let me start by saying I did not hate this film. Overall, I’m pretty ambivalent about it. It’s trying to be a mixture of Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars, but doesn’t do either well. There are elements here that work well enough on their own. Too bad they’re attached to a dud.

The editing by Fred Raskin and Tatiana S. Riegel is a jumbled, god-awful, convoluted, non-sensical mess. The screenplay by Ana Nogueira doesn’t fare much better. She gives us zero reason to get invested in either of the two main plot lines. There are great, meaningful messages that land with a thud due to the film they’re attached to not being very good. There are also contrivances and conveniences aplenty. I honestly was expecting a multitude of people to be credited for the screenplay with how poor and messy it turned out.

Matthias Schoenaerts is the worst offender of the actors as main villain, Krem. He’s a space bully who is more annoying than he is threatening, intimidating, or memorable. Krem is about on the same level of bad as many First Phase MCU villains, if not worse. I farfanooging hated him.

Eve Ridley as Ruthye is not good. She is a more annoying version of Athena from Tomorrowland, but with far less to do. Ruthye had her family butchered in front of her by Krem, and Kara had Krypto shot with a slow-acting poison by Krem. This is what binds our two heroines together and sets the plot into motion.

Milly Alcock as Supergirl, Jason Momoa as Lobo (who only gets around 15 minutes of screen time), David Corenswet as Superman, and David Krumholtz as Zor-El are the stand-outs acting and character wise. Jason Momoa is letting loose and having fun as Lobo, a bounty hunter with a real devil-may-care attitude. He’s a lot of fun but isn’t of much import to the proceedings. Maybe one day he’ll get his own movie. I’d say he deserves one (so long as the talent behind the camera is of higher quality than the crew we have here).

David Corenswet continues to prove he’s perfect as Superman in his few all-too-brief scenes. Milly Alcock as Supergirl does great (the scattered scenes of her backstory are certainly better than most of the rest of the film). Kara is essentially the female version of Star-Lord. Her development is very well done and it’s appreciated that she is heavily flawed.

It’s a shame that the film bearing Supergirl’s name doesn’t live up to her character. She deserves a better movie than this. I can only hope she has roles to play in upcoming films, maybe then she can truly fly. There is no unified, creative vision for this movie. It feels like Craig Gillespie did not have full creative control (studio meddling?).

Supergirl, unlike its main lead, lacks personality and a unique identity. I genuinely don’t know who to blame for this one. Did James Gunn or the studio take too much of a hands on approach? Does Ana Noguiera deserve to take most of the blame for her poor screenwriting skills and lack of vision for the product she churned out? Did editors Fred Raskin and Tatiana S. Riegel kneecap the movie with their choppy, confusing, and scattershot job? Maybe it’s all three? Either way, the end result is the same: a disappointing, unexciting superhero flop that sinks instead of soars.

2 STARS

Craig Gillespie recently confirmed there is a 3 hour HARD R cut of the film that Gunn forced him to cut down, so maybe it really IS Gunn's fault this film is lacking!

Yeah, most people are coming away from the film being like....Well at least we got a likeable Superman

Also I don't think a 3 hour cut of the movie would help....I think it would just make it a longer film 2/5 film
