Went to Over Texas' Fright fest last Friday and was actually pretty happy with it. The Strangers house was a big surprise. It looked like they put way more money into that than they did Stranger Things, which was in the same location previously. They also plussed up Conjuring a good deal.

All Houses were open

MY favorite was Trick R Treats they improved the layout and its just such a fun Halloween house every inch is just such a Fall/Halloween Vibe and Sam and his friend's had lots of fun places to hide and some fun new effects here and there

Saw my first run through was fine but man...the second time I went in the Pig guys were relentless, very fun house and my current second favorite I think

Carnage is my Third favorite house, it has some impressive sets at the end and some fun set pieces along the way. The actors were having fun with this one

Willoughby's: Ressurected is one its last year but the cast and layout design this year are the best in years. I have been going to fright fest since 2010 or before and this house has always been here and its last run is very well done

The Conjuring Universe is fun and about the same as last year but the one more actor was added and I think the most like last year of the IP houses.

The rest of the houses had some great casts and my late night runs of those were super fun

The Opening Scaremoney now takes place in the middle of the city Scare zone and the fire tower and DJ are also located here this year and the opening show is the best its ever been with Carnage leading the way

Margo Rita's Monster Ball is a blast almost a perfect show for that stage, I saw it twice and its a fun time excited to see it more and wonder if more then one character will win it. The first night the same character won it twice. Thank you Six Flags for the amazing show and please bring this energy to holiday in the parks

Sliders of the Night has heart and you cant tell the sliders trust one another and did a great job in helping create this great stunt show, one of the highlights being one slider surfling on another slider. A very well put together show

The Scarezones were fun but one of my complaints is some scarezones had just too little actors in it. Oz was cool and Dorthy is a nice addition but I did not see the Tinman or Lion
Alice was also great and the actors killed it but no Red Queen or Mad Hatter. But a well done zone that I cant wait to go back to

Thunderbolt Alley had some fun actors but the ice cream truck was cut or not there night one. But the actors killed it

The rest of the zones were great as well, just tired and can right more later

But great/amazing event so much fun but heads up there is a new bag policy after 6 PM, so look up the rules before going

Great to hear! Kinda disappointed Conjuring didn't change much (they really need to do something with that "attic"/wood slats only for a long time section), but excited to hear the improvements on the others, the new maze, and the show!

I hadn't heard this was the last year for Willoughby's... is that confirmed? I would get why, it's been around for a very long time, but to me, it's still pretty classic and I always get a lot of scares in it.

Went last night. Everything was open, and park felt relatively crowded, but lines for mazes weren't too bad overall, and generally, I think this could be one of the stronger FF years! Impressions of mazes:

  • Trick 'r Treat is the standout for me! It's been totally redone, and essentially has no black walls anywhere! Feels very much like a Knott's Scary Farm quality maze. Yes, there is one long hallway, but even it is lightly themed, and (should it be staffed), there's a surprise at the end. There's also a great cornfield maze at the end where we genuinely got lost! Felt it could use a few more scareactors, but to me, this was one of the best mazes FF has recently created. Not super long, but for FF, highly detailed and themed.
  • I think Carnage will be divisive. There's some good bones here, and it's certainly an improvement over ST's super large rooms. Not 100% clear about the theme/story, and there were not a lot of scareactors in the first half. But when they did show up in the second half, they were very interactive... at one point, we were given a handstamp to enter the "bar"! I think this needs to get its sea legs, but it seems to me they're going more for interaction than jumpscares. It'll be interesting to see how this maze develops over time, but I think if you come in with the proper expectations and go with it, it could be pretty fun. And I'm not necessarily a big fan of large projections in a maze, but there is one at the end of this I found fairly impressive.
  • Saw is mostly the same inside, but most of the rooms/scenes have been rearranged. They added a lot of quotes from the movie painted on the walls throughout the entire maze, which is actually a genius move: it's a low budget way to honor the movie, theme things, and create a distraction for the scareactors to get you. Speaking of which, the scareactors were much, much more aggressive than last year, and a lot more prominent. I suspect the rearrangement created backstage space so scareactors can cover multiple rooms, making the scareactor cast feel larger than it actually may be--but it works! Yeah, it's all pig mask villains and victims, but they're omnipresent.
  • Conjuring is about 95% the same, with some very minor (and one major) improvement. They added one of the "banger" machine in the attic/slat room space. And surprisingly, it creates a heck of a lot more tension. Towards the end of the maze, they added a projection that makes it look like spirits are writing on the wall. Best for last... FF got their first (as far as I know) large scale puppet, and it's actually pretty good! Worth going through to see that. It also had virtually no line after about 8/8:30 pm
  • Willoughby's, Vault 666, and Truth or Dare have minor improvements (which, unless you've gone through them a lot, you wouldn't be likely to notice), but they were well populated with scareactors. Oddly, Condamned had one of the longest lines of the night, and after doing it so many times over the years, we skipped it and will do it on a future visit.
Shows and overall impressions:
  • Margo Rita's show is the gayest straight drag show I've seen--this is a complement. :) Just Margo and Tequila bantering, introducing other monsters (who all appear to be doing their own singing--and they're quite good!) and some dancers. Nothing special on paper, but fun to watch nevertheless. They also do a very short shout out to Spring Break. It also makes HHN look even more sad that FF can now manage a live show, and they can't.
  • There's DJ"s in a few locations: City Under Siege, and the area in front of Full Throttle. Their music rocks, and really adds a lot of great energy to the event. Only downside: when they go on a break, it's dead silent, and the energy drops like a rock.
  • Be aware there is a new policy that there is NO PARK RE-ENTRY after 6pm. Also, bags much be no larger than 12x12x6 after 6pm. This was mentioned to us as we pulled in the park, there were multiple signs on the walk over, security mentioned it, and it was said as we exited.
I do think my prediction of fewer houses are meaning better quality of the ones we have has come true. On the whole, staff was on top of things, and most things operated smoothly. I didn't miss Aftermath at all (Sewer of Souls, a bit, haha). Are the mazes HHN quality? Of course not. But on a relative scale for Fright Fest, this may be one of their better years. I do love they are able to pulse groups in, and avoid conga lines. In fact, there were many mazes where we felt like we were in there alone, which really elevates the experience.

Went tonight

As long as you can enter before 6 PM you can keep your backpack, so nice to confirm that

Big crowds at the opening show, Carnage took me almost to 7:30 PM because of how the Ops work (group by group instead of a Conga line)

Skipped Saw it had a 40+ min wait every time I checked so it and Carnage for now have the biggest waits

Walked on everything else, did Conjuring twice and still have not gotten the Nun coming out of the photo......its the best effect in house but so rare to get at least for me

Oz had the Tinman and Lion out tonight and the Lion make up is very well done.

The crows in the Grimlore Ridge were super wanting to talk and perform tonight which was fun

Wonderland I saw most of the characters but still not see the Mad Hatter myself

Thunderbolt Ally seems to moved away from the ice cream/yeti story line they had and more just about the Greesers and other old timely people its a more fun chill zone

Carnage to me is just...kind of weird he does not want you to be on your phone...but literally thats how you show how cool the event is by videos and pictures just weird to me to make a character who hates consumerism at an event aimed to make money. For now I will back off talking to him because he seems to really not enjoy tech/phones.

Event is super fun and just not that crowded and glad it was open tonight and heard scary farm was not....just why Six flags?

Anyway if anyone from Six Flags is reading this I'd encourage characters to take videos and photos, I've seen many try and a few just seem to walk away but the joy people get when a character is down to interact is priceless and think for the actors that want to lean into this please let them because its what sets you apart from HHN. I'm just saying lean into being interactive and hopefully the videos and pictures work as advertisement and draws in more guests

House count

Saw zero tonight and 2 total
Carnage 1 tonight and 4 total
Trick R Treat 1 tonight and 4 total
Willbuys 1 tonight and 3 total
Condemned 1 tonight and 3 total
Vault 666 1 tonight and 3 total
Conjuring 2 tonight and 4 total
Truth or Dare Zero tonight and 2 Total
Saw Marga Reta Show tonight so thats 3 total

I don't think it'd odd for a character to ask you to put away your phone, especially in a maze. There's safety considerations, as well as privacy ones. Also nothing wrong with just being in the moment.

This is the scarezone, I'm just saying creating a character who is like put your phones away when....thats how the event gets more traction. Also they are a corporation that uses social media....

Nothing wrong with the moment but the event needs people posting about it so others hopefully come is my point

Also HHN/Sea World/Knotts has let phones be used for year, how if you don't have a light on is it a safely thing in the houses?

I took it off since we can't get political but if your going to make a show or event with a message...stick with your guns. If your going to talk about an evil empire don't give in the second they put lite pressure on you

It can be a safety thing because if you're (and not you personally, but anyone filming) gets distracted and trips or bumps into something or someone and falls, the park could be held liable

And social media is far from the only thing that promotes an event. There's a reason parks have a marketing department. Social media from others can help, but I don't think it's their main focus (mainly because it can also hurt them just as much... a person can be filming and later post, "look how terrible this event is!" Not all publicity is going to be good publicity.

Knott's Scary Farm had no social media for it's first 50 or so years of existence, so...

I mean, I just looked up Six Flags MM fright fest commercial and found none for this year

I know we are all different because we are super fans but when I want to see an event, I look up videos on youtube and normally people on there give good layouts of what is being offered and assume at this point most people kind of do the same or they just go directly to the website and buy without knowing much

Fair enough someone could make a video saying "this sucks" but to me that would be more a reflection on the event, USH isn't worried about that and for now at least Six Flags seems to be fine with filming since people are going in small groups or just by themself in a house.

Anyway, I doubt it will do much good but I'm telling everyone I know to go to this event even just for the scarezones and shows. Its a fun time and less people then HHN which is a plus to many people, I hope they just lean into marketing that shows the actors talents here because for me at least thats what brings me back is the actors they really put everything they have into making the event great

I doubt it will come back but even just a small version of Scream break would be cool, like maybe no houses just have shows and scarezones around the park and its free nighttime event to draw people in and maybe have a food festival at the same time
