I have D60 and LOVE it! I am hoping to get at least a 55-200mm zoom for Christmas, a 300 would be nice but BIG price difference.

I need a tripod bad too.

I asked for the 300mm because I do some wildlife stuff (when you live in the woods in West Virginia its easy pickins), but that is about the only time I use a telephoto.

I know next to nothing about cameras, but what is a telephoto lens used for?

It depends on how high end of a lens you get. It ranges from about 200 to 11,000+

Yeah I am opting for the 200mm, it's about $250-300.
The 300mm jumps up to like over $600, so I will settle for now.
