I just love how full circle this is. La Llorona was the first Latin American lead character at HHN Hollywood and now shes capping off the Monstruos trilogy. It's like poetry, it rhymes.

“One wails. One bites. One beguiles. La Llorona, La Muelona and La Siguanaba await in the dark. Three legends La Muerte wants you to meet, but you’ll wish you never did”.

La Llorona obviously wails. But for the other two, it's a bit unclear - according to some preliminary googling, both La Muelona and La Siguanaba beguile men, luring them from the path, and then biting (leading men astray and biting either with sharp teeth or a horse head).

I have loved Monstruous 1 and Monstruous 2 in Hollywood, so have no doubt Monstruous 3 will also be good, but I'm curious how they will distinguish these three sufficiently.

From Wikipedia, La Muelona means "Big molar woman" so I assume she's the one that bites (also the key art seems to have her in the big teeth Cucuy masks).

The chasm of Latin American legends and myths is vast, and it feels like they are choosing choices that don't feel like they are pushing what Monstruos *could* be as a concept.

i mean, i guess? i just don't think this is the same as "playing it safe" or what this has to do with twitter. i'm also not all that worried about these legends being too similar to what they've done in the past, but that's admittedly because a lot of these legends, ah, rhyme with one another.

How has it been "run into the ground" when it was among the best houses the last two years and there's literally no indication that this one won't be good, as well?

Hated last year's house: awkward layout, telegraphed scares, masks were awful to wear, it was just the '23 house with a fresh coat of paint. We've done La Llorona three times now I want something new new not kinda new.

Love that La Llorona is coming back, so count me excited. Wish Chupacabra came here in some way, but this is interesting.

Gotta say, one real nice thing about these houses is that I end up learning something from them. That's kinda cool.

I didn't know who El Charro was until last year. Ngl he sounds like a dick.

I guess I just don't see your distaste for something -- which is totally fair and valid, don't begrudge you feeling that way -- amounts to it being "run into the ground," but that's cool.

Also, and I say this as a former scare actor, one's feelings about the masks being awful to wear (frequently valid!) is 1) not specific to this particular house and 2) not typically a guest-facing concern, meaning it doesn't impact the house's design quality.

Reusing La Llorona is a bit of a shrug, but I'm intrigued by the other choices.

The El Cucuy mask was super fun to look at, so I am kind of excited if a version of it is back

People forget the dark days of inescapable Walking Dead and Purge I guess, in the case of the latter we still haven't really escaped. I've always kinda been of the opinion with Monstruos and Universal Monsters that so long as they do something conceptually new with it each year I won't be dissatisfied. Variety is the name of the game for me and I'd much rather see one of the 1 to 1 repeats replaced with an original rather than see Monstruos get canned given the option, even if we're seeing diminishing returns.

100%, I don't have a personal annecdote to that point, but I've heard from others that uncomfortable masks seems to just be the nature of the situation with every mask from magee fx. No slight to their work whatsoever, it looks incredible, but from everyone I've heard from the visual quality and craftsmanship absolutely comes with the trade of personal comfort compared to the wider mouth and eye holes of the boneyard fx days.

I mean, if it was just La Llorona in increasingly dull iterations I could see the argument -- like if we've reached "Malibu Stacy w/ New Hat" levels. But the two houses were super varied from one another in terms of subject/concept and I'm sure we'll see a fresh perspective on the character now that she's back. At the very least, there's no reason to assume it won't be fresh, so to say it's "running into the ground" is just a weird take at this point in time. Sure, maybe we get there and it ends up being dull. Totally possible. But there's no reason to think that right now.

It will be interesting to see if next year comes to pass with no Latin American horror house.

I don’t think they will be getting rid of the Dia de Los Muertos courtyard (and La Catrina) since they are undoubtedly huge moneymakers, so I would guess it will go it alone in future years.

My money is on a horrors of Asia going into the lower lot next year.

The segments are always hit or miss but we have had some breathtaking ones, so I will still be excited for our (probably) final Latin American horror house.
