Spent a quick weekend in New York City with my buddies Jeff and Felipe to do NYC stuff - shows and close a hotel.

Maybe Happy Ending was a wonderful show that I managed to snag $100 per ticket. We sat stage left and the reports of cutoffs on the stage were true - I saw only half of each apartment and some other details. Despite that flaw, the staging is impressive and reminds me of the 2022 Company but evolved and updated. The direction was great too, actors were easily seen even from the sides. Darren Criss and Helen Shen are wonderful in the show, it's really a two-person piece at heart and they make it work. The two side characters (a crooner and father/son) are great, but for such a show only one woman on stage kinda sucks. The music is fantastic and the show is deeply moving, it's a big breath of fresh air in this season's shows. Also there is some really solid comedy in the show, it's not all emo robots.

HWABOON 4 LIFE

Apparitions. We closed Sleep No More and now it was time to close The McKittrick Hotel. I'm a wee new babe to this whole venture but it was great seeing the hotel one last time. My "time" inside there was nearly doubled during the parties, plus they didn't take our phones away so I got lots of photos! The whole thing was a blast, from taking shots with Caroline in Malcomb's backroom to watching the giant paper boat rock back and forth as a tale about the moon played or the Nurses' Rave which gave me a whole idea of a new immersive show to all the performances on the ballroom. Wow, so much. Watch videos on YouTube, I can't link more here as many are Rated R.

I will be going to the Portland stop. I’ve wanted to see one of the musicals for years.

Also, saw the national tour of Parade yesterday. It’s an exquisite show, and an extremely masterful production. Probably one of the “tightest” performances I’ve ever seen in a national tour. While a lot of tours I’ve seen all felt slightly “off” from their Broadway counterparts, this didn’t. This felt like a Broadway quality show.

I can’t say it’s a good time. The show is constantly jabbing you with reality before delivering an absolute haymaker of a finish. But, that’s the point. It sticks with you, and it’s a great example of how theater SHOULD stick with you. I love fun, popcorn-faire shows (I’m seeing Beetlejuice in three weeks), but this is a necessary show.

The book isn’t perfect. I have some definite qualms with parts of it, but I generally have some issues with Jason Robert Brown anyway so those qualms kinda jive.

EDIT -

On a similar note, “Indecent” on BroadwayHD is a must-watch too.

So this is such a last minute thing, we may have an opportunity to see Life and Trust finally this Saturday, but one question I had (and feel free to DM if too spoilery) was about the use of stobes?

My fiance has a bit of a photosensitivity issue when it comes to heavy strobes, and having questioned my own sanity during the SNM rave, I was wondering if there were any places to avoid, or any moments in the opening or closing scenes where prolonged or intense strobing were present? If it was quick, like lightning flashes, or telegraphed in a way he could get his eyes closed first he usually is fine, but it can definitely knock him for a loop if unexpected.

Any help is appreciated! I know the show is still young, so not as well documented as SNM, but especially for the opening and closing scenes it would be appreciated!

(also also, reviews will be coming in at SOME point, but have pretty much nothing but positives to say about Death Becomes Her and will be seeing Twenty Sided Tavern this weekend too!)

(Some very light spoilers for Life and Trust ahead)

The old/original version of the preshow did include a brief flash of strobes (about 2 seconds in total) to conceal a quick change/shift. However, as of last week, that preshow has been reworked (...and frankly, sounds like it still needs more work), and I do not believe it includes the strobes any longer.

With the caveat of I haven't looped every character, I can't think of any obvious set piece in the show itself that uses intense strobes. The finale is intensely lit, but no strobes.

Does the electrical escape with Marie and Sybil use a strobe? I could have sworn it does. What about the boxing matches?

Thank you so much! I kind of heard some reworking has been done, so I am hopeful it won't be an issue!

Luckily he's a frequenter of haunts and other theatrical stuffs, so in a lab-like setting he'll be on the watch already! The curse of photosensitivity and loving that kind of thing has trained him to keep an eye out when it's telegraphed by location, etc. Mainly the super unexpected or out of left field ones are what he's worried about.

(personally I am also looking forward to the boxing match, Marie, and the vaudevillians, but am definitely also not trying to get my hopes up about any specific scenes [also also trying to show some restraint and go in as blind as possible, haha])

Joe is right - I've only seen the entire electrical escape twice (it often fails to run and they do alternate choreo if there's a technical issue), but there are indeed some flashing lights then. There is a huge build-up to the flashing, however, so you'll have a very good idea when it's coming -- you can easily just close your eyes for a few moments at the climax of the sequence and probably be fine. You don't need to worry about strobing in Marie's lab proper -- note that the electrical escape occurs in Destiny Park.

The boxing matches... those have what I'd call dynamic lighting, but not really strobes, no? It's been a minute since I've seen the Valentin vs. Marco (now Rafi) fight, but I feel like the Valentin vs. Conwell & Mephisto fight is pretty tame, lighting-wise.

I can't recommend Mr. Vaudeville's loop enough. One of my favorites in any of these shows and largely unaffected by the recent changes. Prepare for some crowds on him, potentially, as a fan favorite performer recently assumed the role. Then again... you're going on a Saturday, where fans are less likely to congregate. Could be a cool opportunity.

Definitely looking forward to it all! Thanks for the heads! He gets a little anxious sometimes, but if he reacts like I did the first time in SNM (this is his first immersive show like this), he will be in such a trance-like state I'm not even sure how he will have time to register being anxious, haha.

So curious how much evolving this will do over the years. Having only seen SNM earlier last year it was well and truly solidified long before I ever stepped foot into the McKittrick, so I am very curious to come back and see how things change over time here!

I asked around and did get one additional warning -- Dorian and Basil Conwell's reset scene together does involve what has been described as an aggressive strobe, so your partner may want to exercise caution if he's following either of those characters following the big gala.

Do report back! Would love to hear what you think.

There’s also an accessibility guide for the show, I’d call and see if they can advise beyond what we’ve crowd sourced.

That being said….

So, longer format review at some point, but my thoughts are generally:

I liked it! I took a wholly different approach to experiencing this show than I did with Sleep No More, and so I can't lie, I definitely feel like I need to get back and just experience it again. SNM, I just let the night guide me, with no particular interest in following specific characters, and so maybe saw a handful of scenes play out. With L&T, I don't think I made it 3 or so minutes without finding another show scene, so definitely felt the increase in actors wholesale.

Strangely enough too, I found myself following a specific character for most of the night, Davenport, Dr. Kellog's assistant. I have no particular reasoning behind why, I just found myself drawn in by her, starting with a scene
where she and Dr. Kellog share a, uh, drink together
. Over the course of the loop it had a lovely little arc that played out, so it was really spectacular to follow a storyline this time around
From the spectral shower scene after the poisoning, to getting her fortune read (complete with some fun séance magic, blood letting and leeches, down to her drunkenly bursting onto stage with the vaudevillians
. I am sad I didn't get to exactly follow her further, as I lost track of her after the last bit and I didn't want to be that uncaring black mask who runs through a scene to chase a character.

Structurally I think I did feel as if it was shorter than SNM. I ended up with the last time slot, but our reservation was very last minute anyway, so I can't complain, but the lack of a distinct reset also made the whole night feel as if it was one big story, rather than loops. I know demonstrably it was the same length as SNM, but perhaps it was a combo of only two loops, no banquet style scene (or I completely missed it at least) and the later timeslot that did it to me.

I did very much enjoy the world building with the preshow (no strobes!) and the finale was incredibly high energy, which I did love! Definitely going to need to do this at least once more to really start to get a feel for things! And I absolutely know there were at least four or five rooms I never even set foot in!

My fiancé was very impressed by the vibes and atmosphere, but he definitely struggled a little with the non-linear storytelling and movement focus. He has been jokingly exaggeratedly dance-acting random small things around the house for weeks now (think Liza Minelli Turning Off a Lamp, but more dramatic, haha) so at the very least it DID have an impact on him, whether he wants to admit it or not, lolol. He has said he would go back if it was a slightly discounted price and he could read more into the lore to know what to piece together.

All in all, I would say positive, but I may have enjoyed SNM just a tad more as a first time experience! Can't wait to go back for more eventually!
