We all bemoan the lack of original films but this movie is gonna make a billion dollars. It is what it is.

Hopefully this sets Deblois up for a more interesting live action career.

I'm not shocked but I would also like to see the actual quote before I get outraged. "Barely changed the script" sounds like a distortion.

Edit: This quote otoh has an unmistakable aura of sadness (source):

After ‘Dragon 3’ came out in 2019, I spent the next four or five years pitching, selling, and writing original [live action] screenplays,” DeBlois told IndieWire. “Several at Universal. COVID happened, and they weren’t greenlit. And then, all of a sudden, I got a call from Universal saying that they were looking at the library with DreamWorks and considering this idea that we might do a fully realized live-action, big-budget version of ‘How to Train Your Dragon.’

To do some arm-chair psychologizing here, I guess Dean tries and fails to get multiple live-action projects off the ground and gets offered a HTTYD remake as a jumping off point, a movie he feels obligated to make both for professional reasons and to make sure the franchise is stewarded properly (because if he won't make it, someone else will).

26 years ago, the PSYCHO remake was universally hated and trashed by all critics,
it was universally rejected,
it was too close to the original. it failed bigly.

now, with this movie, it's just business as usual, no one bats an eye. it's just normal. no one will trash it. it will do well at the box office.

Also animation doesn't allow their directors to get royalties compared to live action....so now he get royalties on art he contributed in creating.

I wouldn't take that bet. Even back in 2019 when people were more willing to go out to theaters, the last film only pulled in $500 million WW. It won't help that Disney has burned off a lot of goodwill people had towards live-action remakes of beloved movies.

That's absolutely logically sound but this is one of those cases where I just can't ignore the metrics anymore. Each trailer gets absurdly high like counts (the teaser outdid Jurassic World Rebirth) and the Super Bowl trailer was the fourth most-popular ad of the entire game.

Lot of millennials out there that grew up with the movies have kids now, I guess. I expect this one to hold up overseas too, unlike Twisters and Wicked. We'll see, though.

1) This is admirably honest

2) Every interview so far has sounded like it came from a blindfolded hostage.

I don't know, the reactions I've seen -- while predictably hyperbolic -- do not sell me that there's anything new to see here. It's just the first movie... again.
