I'm guessing this work can't be prudently put off any longer, as many building elements have likely reached the end of their expected service lives. Refreshing the show itself is more of a bonus to get another marketing bullet point and help justify the expense.

Yes. And that's worked well for WDW too. Like having a new attraction....almost.

It works well so long as the updated attraction is at least as good as the original iteration. The Amazing Adventure of Spider-Man is probably Universal's best execution of this kind of upgrade. Both Disney and Universal have had some misses.
