Do we know who is in charge of design of which house of the announced ones so far? Like I know Ramon Paradoa did Madlands and Dylan Kollath did Jack v Oddfellow. That's one of the nerdy behind-the-scenes things my husband and I are trying to get better at learning/recognizing from year to year but I never know where to find that out for each house. I just happen to stumble across that fact for SOME house sometimesss

Are there usually consistent people in charge of IPs vs originals? Like I know Dylan Kollath usually does the scenic houses, so I'm assuming he's usually/mostly originals but maybe that's not always the case?

I always love it when they swing for the fences with a sci-fi house that’s high-concept. Honestly the Vanity Ball-style house spec was exciting, I was eager to get gay as hell with things again, but this took me by surprise and the premise is super cool?

I’m surprised considering the houses they’ve built in the past that they’ve had ideas they consider too disturbing. It’d be awesome to see some of the napkin sketches that they’ve had there. Put out an art book, y’all!

I’m probably gonna catch some crap for this but imo the recent house announcements have been not great. The artwork continues to be ChatGPT, the descriptions and ideas sound like they’re coming from a dart board. This plus the new Stranger Danger house has so far been underwhelming.

And to clarify, I’m still going. I still love the event and have nothing but respect and admiration for the amazing talent that brings these to life. I’m just not feeling it yet and that has me a bit concerned.

The only year I felt underwhelmed by the House Announcements was HHN 33. And even then I enjoyed that year despite its *many* flaws.

I don't think HHN 35 will be a weak "anniversary" year like HHN 30.

I have to completely disagree with this.

The ChatGPT artwork and throwing darts at a board come across more as being different, original and unique.

I think the stylized key art is inspired and awesome (the stuff for the originals, not so much, but that’s always the case).

For the houses, all our speculation for the originals was “HHN 27 house mashed up with HHN 31 house” wishes (I just made up those numbers). But instead, they turned out to be completely new houses with the exception of HR from 15 years ago and the obligatory Jack anniversary house.

I think the key art shows a fun new look, consistent across IPs and Originals, and the original houses seem to be taking what would be logical assumptions for HHN super fan nerds and zagging from what was the safe expectation.

A Terminator/Matrix ripoff vs BzzzzzzCon/Vanity Ball v3.0 mashup is a huge win in my book.

Universal doesn’t get credit for the shortcomings of our own speculation. Every rumor is immediately speculated as some sort of returning idea or sequel and it happens year after year. Fans rarely consider the possibility of new ideas during speculation. That makes any “new” (to them) idea feel like some great, original concept when it speaks more to their lack of imagination than what Universal is creating. For YEARS, Universal has done mostly new ideas but speculation’s default is “this is coming back.”

That said, Universal leverages pre-existing resources all the time - ESPECIALLY costumes and decor. It saves money and it saves time. Cybergorium is likely going to reuse decor from Fallout. Sinners and the alien house will likely reuse components from Hatchet and Chains and Jason Universe. Chaos and Control will likely reuse stuff from Terrifier. That’s fine. The repackaging is honestly impressive. But it’s still repackaging. The original Havoc was a HotY. It was also a repaint of the reviled Spawning with the performers in tank tops.

If anything, I think the storyline for Cybergorium feels forced - subversive for the sake of being subversive. I also think the key art for the originals is pretty mid.

So far it looks to be Ramon Paradoa directing Sinners and Bloodengutz, Matt Flood directing Madlands and Cybergoria, and I believe Charles Gray directing J&O.

As for designers, Dylan Kollath is working on J&O, Manuel Cordero on Sinners, David Hughes on Cybergoria, Nick Collins is doing Bloodengutz and a newer designer (Cam Batz on twitter) is working on Madlands, who is also the one who pitched the idea.

I don’t think details on the treatment and design for ST5 have been disclosed.

All this was found via tweets among the creatives and what was discussed in the published articles.

Exactly my thoughts summed up. Cannot wait for this event and will always, but something about this year’s originals, aside from the anniversary houses, feel so lifeless, distant, and random. Really disappointed in the descriptions we’ve been getting, as it honestly just sounds like a random jumble of ideas thrown at a board, that are genuinely more confusing than remotely scary. I know I will be pleasantly surprised once the event starts, and I have always been an odd one out, where I favor IP’s more anyway, but yeah just a lot of bottom of the hype list stuff for me this year. That’s okay though, after last year’s great event. Just happy to be back in the fog soon, & to go through the awesome IP’s announced so far!

My wife was a theater/production kid so one of her favorite things to do during HHN is spotting props/decor from previous years.
