Man, there really is not a ton of aesthetic throughline between these houses. Chuck E. Cheese, nuclear wasteland, summer camp, 19th century Spain, wild west, and now Toy Story. I dig all of these and I'm glad El Artista is the one that's "setting the tone" but I'm starting to feel funny about all that optimism around the cohesion they were talking about at Spooky Empire. Hope Sergio and the Creation House have a decent presence in the scare zones.

I guess I don't really expect much cohesion between the houses — I'm more interested in seeing that in the areas outside the houses. Scare zones, tribute store, music, etc.

Realistically, how would the cohesion happen house to house? They could definitely do it with scarezones like they did with Oddfellow, but even years like Lady Luck and Bloody Mary really stretched having all houses connected to the icon.

Yeah, I'm largely the same, I just thought it was interesting that they specifically talked about being able to shape a theme around the IP houses at Spooky Empire... before announcing a theme that had nothing to do with the IP houses (or even most of the originals). If they can sell it in the scare zones and the houses are good on their own then it doesn't really matter.

Yeah, that's fair enough. When creatives of any of these events start vamping about immersion or cohesion or whatever I mentally take out a gigantic bag of salt.

I will admit to rolling my eyes harder than I've ever rolled them before when they said the keyword this year was "immersion." Really had to dig deep for that one, huh?

After last year’s complaints, I think they were trying to make clear they’re coming into this year differently and aware of the chatter - so they’ll rely on the marketing buzzwords and jargon.

Dollhouse of the Damned is one of the houses from the past that I really wish I could’ve experienced so I’m super excited for this one.

I think the point they were trying to make at the panel about cohesion and how the story fits is "things coming to life". That's the tie-in for the houses.

Toys come to life. A legend comes to life. A movie comes to life. Etc. Some will definitely be stretches, but I agree - I want to see the bulk of that theme cohesion throughout the event, in the streets, etc.

I'd also argue there's a common theme of different art forms being represented through each house, though I admit it might be a stretch.

WWE - Wrestling/performance art
El Artista - Paintings
FNaF - Animatronics/themed entertainment
Graveyard - Architecture
Terrifier - Extreme cinema
Jason - Slasher genre
Fallout - Science fiction
Vikings - Legends
Dolls - Toy creation
Hatchet and Chains - Westerns

I think that it might be "coming to life" and/or "transformation". Just from the initial SZ descriptions at least.

glad you can admit it’s a stretch, these things don’t feel connected. They get popular IPs, they make good originals. If they wanted them to be connected I feel like they would’ve made it a bigger deal. Look forward to the possibility of connected scarezones.
