Alice Cooper. Slash.

But The Weeknd is in another realm of popularity. It's possible, but not a slam dunk.

Alice Cooper did came back a few times at Hollywood, but only once at Orlando. The Weeknd could break the streak.

I know some have said that WB related IP may not happen since they've been unreliable partners. However. If i'm leading up HHN, I just don't see how you could watch that premiere of The Last of Us and not immediately want to pick up the phone to bring a house to the event. I sincerely hope they find a way to make it happen.

I can't imagine any reason for the last of us not being in hhn this year if they were already trying to get it before.
One thing is delayed projects, but now that it is out , I can't see why it wouldn't work ( unless universal just doesn't want to)
Who knows what happens but I'll be shocked if it's not here for hhn.

Maybe it's just me, but it feels kinda incredible that there is already a roster of IPs where we're all pretty much like, "Yeah, I could see those happening", and it's still January.

And half of those were tried years before like scream. Half of them are cancellations or delays lol.
We are due some of those houses lol.

I think someone online ( Twitter or reddit) said that the hhn survey asked if people wanted the Weeknd to return.
I'm sure everyone answered yes. I'm guessing it was unanimously yes.
If uni asked, and people might have said a strong yes. I can see it return definitely

It’s important to remember that licensing rights for HHN (anything really) is transactional and situational. Last year, (rumored) HBO wanted Universal to help market TLOU as it was coming put to help put eyes on the series. As a result, the licensing cost for Universal was agreeable. HBO needed Universal in this agreement.

TLOU is a hit now. HBO doesn’t “need” to market TLOU. That means the asking price for Universal to use the IP will very likely increase. But how much? Is it worth it for Universal? Hypothetically - if Universal could license three more varied but smaller IPs for the cost of TLOU would it still be worth it?

It is never as simple as “we almost had it before.”

After doing some reading, gonna change up two of my IP predictions:
  • The Horrors of Blumhouse (M3GAN + Exorcist) - Of course, there's the Reddit AMA where they casually confirmed she'll have a presence at HHN this year. Combine that with all the talk of FNaF more likely to be a house next year than it would be this year, and you get another HoB, combining M3GAN with the upcoming Exorcist reboot. I would say Insidious 5 instead, but Sony is distributing it.

  • Saw X - All the talks of Universal likely not wanting to work with WB this year after one (maybe even two) dropouts last year makes me think Universal will go to Lionsgate to talk about potentially bringing Saw X to the event. Saw has already had two houses in the past and Lionsgate seems easy to work with. What would you do for the house though? The first was based on Saw VI, Games of Jigsaw was based on the original saga as a whole, so what to do for a 3rd one? I think it'd be rather simple: Jigsaw and Spiral, with a final scene acting as a teaser for Saw X, like they did in 27's house for Jigsaw.

What if Horrors of Blumhouse did feature Insidious, but it's just a "best of" for chapters 1-4? Is Universal not able to work out an agreement with Sony for chapter 5? I feel like they could get chapter 5 fairly easily.

How do we know Universal doesn't want to work with HBO/WB? Sure, they lost 2 IPs, but I don't think that would instantly kill the relationship. Saw feels like a given to me, so I agree with you there lol.

Also, TLOU is not just HBO. Its HBO, SKY, Sony and Naughty Dog who each own a set of licensing/ancillary rights. So with that many hands in the point, its also gonna get messy.

Sony/Naughty Dog are essentially the same thing though as Sony owns Naughty Dog.

That and if the rumors are true WB offered Evil Dead Rise after pulling TLOU, I can't imagine Uni was thrilled having them pull out at the last minute. And for me it would be completely understandable if Uni chose not to go after either of them this year.

Naturally, it's all moot if they actually land one or both of them, but if they don't, I can't say I'm surprised.

Oh no, that's really tricky. I guess I shouldn't expect it so strongly. I hope we get it. But, I'll keep my expectations lower.

A Second Season seems pretty much a definite as long as viewership doesn't drop off a cliff, so there's still always a chance if we don't see TLOU this year that it comes in preparation of Season 2 or something like that, which probably wouldn't come out until sometime in 2025.

Whenever the question is asked what my #1 wishlist property is for HHN, my answer has been for a decade and continues to be TLOU and I don't think anything will ever change that until it finally comes to the event. That could be this year or 20 years from now or it may never happen, but that will always be my answer until i'm walking through a TLOU house.

Oh… I’m actually under the mindset it’ll show up sooner rather than later now. But, I agree that 2024 feels a touch more likely than 2023. Assuming season 2 is late 2024/early 2025, then a house next year re-energizes interest and allows a potential “season 2 sneak peek.”

It's an interesting way to look at it because like you said, HBO doesn't "need" Universal.

Netflix didn't "need" Universal for Stranger Things, but it was worth it for Uni because of the draw of the property.

I'm interested to see how the rest of the season shakes out as far as popularity, because the more popular it gets the more it may become worth it for Uni. Fingers crossed for this year, as I don't know if I'll be able to attend next year.

I know this was asked previously, but would Universal really NEED to go through HBO? Theoretically the house could be based off the game, and they could just go through Sony/Naughty Dog? I mean, there doesn't seem to be enough of a difference between the game and movie that would be noticeable in a house.

The big question here would be, are there going to be any iconic scenes that occur in the show that people would expect to be in a house, that don't happen in the game.

On top of that, they would have to tread a line very carefully around likenesses. Anything seen as presenting something akin to its look in the show, rather than the game, is ripe for cease and desist.

So, Joel and Ellie would have to look more like their game counterparts. Logos, sets, etc would have to be carefully designed to make sure they don't step on toes.

Is saving a chunk of cash really worth hurting a relationship that could bring other popular properties?

For sure - but like I said, the show is looking to be so accurate to the game that there may not be a noticeable difference to people who haven't played the game.

Even the clothes Joel is wearing in the first episode are identical to the opening segment of the game.

Who knows though, I may just be grasping because I really want it at the event lol

Honestly. That might make it even more difficult. That could result in Uni arguing that they're adapting the game, and Warner saying that it's too close to the series. In actuality, they'd both be correct.

Did they not? Maybe not numerically, but a Netflix property appearing at the same event that featured New Line, Warner Brothers, Blumhouse, and (natch) Universal properties gave Netflix the same legitimacy as those content creators. Suddenly, Netflix wasn’t “just” a streamer; they’re creating IPs that can be licensed beyond itself.

Netflix needed Universal, contextually.

I didn't really think of it this way.

I'm definitely grasping at straws in hopes of TLOU coming, lol
