So something that I’ve noticed hasn’t really been discussed yet is the lack of IPs featured in the scarezones. Should we view this as a concentrating sign that HHN is losing some of it’s luster with other companies and perhaps even Universal Pictures? In 2019 there were six houses based on IPs and two scarezone for a total of eight IPs that year. This year there are only three IPs features at the event. Don’t get me wrong, I love originals just as much as every other Horror Nights fan, but I feel as if IPs are important for the financial state of the event, as well as its status as the country’s premier Halloween event. I’d hate to see it become a smaller event with a smaller budget, and am worried this is a concerning sign.

I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all but I do think we may be pivoting back to more originals and less IP’s, like the old days. I hope at some point that’ll include pivoting back to doing new icons (not this year, I don’t have any hope of that anymore). We used to not have IP’s or not so many. It was successful and the country’s premier Halloween event for years before IP’s really took over. The icons and the original creations and the production made it stand out before IP’s did.

I also don’t think we’ll ever not have any IP’s but maybe continuing to be less IP’s and more originals.

I think it seems like there are less to work with for sure. Disney owns so much, more than they used to now that they own Fox (why AHS can’t come back now) and they’re not gonna let use their stuff. WB also owns a lot of great horror properties which we’ve gotten in the past but we haven’t in a while once they started their own event. I don’t know if we’ll be able get them or not. Hopefully they can work it out with Netflix, but it’s definitely getting to be less properties they seem to be able to get.

There are actually 4 IPs. It's usually a 5/5 split, but evil dead dropped out, so we are left with 4

A thought occurred to me that since the MIB tent is not being used will Springfield still be a S&S location? As it usually let out to the MIB tent and the ST houses opened a little later.

Didn't the second S&S location last year exit out to Beetlejuice and The Haunting of Hill House, the two parade building houses?

Both right. You could go into lines for Beetlejuice or Hill House or you could go past those lines and hang out in Sprinfield which had Carey open first before the other tents.

Well, if Evil Dead wouldn't have dropped out we would have had an even 5/5 split. If anything, I can see them moving forward with an even split.

That said, I think next year we'll probably see Stranger Things and possibly TLOU, so HHN 32 could be IP heavy.

I am surprised to see zero IP zones though!

I actually did some math about IP houses earlier because idk I’m a nerd lol.

Going from 2012 this is the percentage of IP houses to original houses, I wasn’t thinking of scarezones.

2012: 71%
2013: 62.5%
2014: 62.5%
2015: 55.5%
2016: 66.6%
2017: 55.5%
2018: 60%
2019: 60%
2021: 40%
2022: 40%

This would look very different if they didn't lose Scream in 2015, Conjuring in 2017, and Evil Dead for 2022.

And.. I think Game of Thrones in 2019? Was that actually a thing?

Wouldn’t have changed for 2015 as that was replaced with an IP (Purge), but yeah you’re right with the others.

No. This is a reach.

They got The Weeknd, guys. That wasn’t an easy get. Neither was the OG Halloween. Vertical integration will make working with certain companies whose properties were previously accessible (i.e. 20th Century Fox) difficult to impossible. Beyond that, I assure you many IP holders are happy to work with Universal when presented with the right opportunity.

This is why I think there's more than a good chance Simpsons stays around in the parks - IT'S FREE MONEY BABY!

While I don't know what the proper way to quantify it would be, I'm sure the ROI on IP-scarezones is significantly less than IP-houses. Why go through the licensing and legal work for something that wouldn't significantly boost your overall product?

So I bet its more of a situation where HHN shot-callers don't feel the need to integrate IPs into the scarezones unless there's either a great idea on the table, or some sort of marketing/synergy opportunity at play (ie. Zombieland: Double Tapped).

Random little thoughts and ideas for HHN 31.
1. Have a boris meet and greet by his facade in New York. Random? Absolutely.. perfect photo op for fans and others who have genuinely no idea who he is? Sure. Reminds me of the jack photo booth near jaws in 20.
2. The new prison original… shadybrook or hellgate? Or something entirely new? Maybe A Boris case at one of these locations? Maybe body collectors? - it’s a reach ( but fun speculation)
3. Opening ceremony vibes for the year? Would be a cool “calling all trick or treaters it’s Halloween night” vibe with some “Traditional halloween” characters following up behind them on stilts etc.
4. Worried about a lot of Originals and lack of IP effecting event? Maybe it’s a way for universal and HHN to see if having the original content will still bring the crowd with positive feedback after? Especially after the praise from wicked growth even from the GP. And how they can move forward like this maybe for next couple of years till Epic Universe?
- Just some thoughts and hopes and speculation!

My first thought was more along the lines of Hellgate, but I honestly hope it’s neither. I could do without any more “Uh oh! Angy/crayzee bois broke out of their cells, oops!” houses at any haunt event for the foreseeable future.

2. Rumor is Hellgate. I have nothing definite yet.
3. If what I heard about the lagoon show is true, I bet it's something like that. Something wholesome and retro that gets turned dark and disturbing.

Considering Hellgate wasn’t received well by the public back in 2004, that would be an interesting choice if they went a similar route now. :_:
