As much as I think Universal is money hungry, I don't think this is it -- to try and get ONE DAY of early entry people to get Express seems like a silly move when the very next day, the info will be widespread to anyone looking for it. Honestly, it's probably logistical fall out from EPN -- what mazes need the extra prep time, employee travel to locations, makeup, etc.. THEY probably still don't even know.

That's true to an extent, but I don't mean internet people who trail the event extensively, I mostly mean obfuscating that info from general guests who come once or twice a year and don't know any better.
You are right that that wouldn't be the only factor and that natural growing pains are also a big part. Although things tend to open in the same order every year, they probably don't wanna be on the recieving end of complaints if something opens later than the time they listed, which I imagine probably happened here and there back when it was free, if you don't list what times things open, nobody can claim you ripped them off when it opens late.
