I saw people on this thread calling Flight of the Hippogriff a kiddy coaster but calling Big Thunder Mountain a family coaster that appeals to families and thrill seekers. They are both the same height and speed. The only difference is you bought into the marketing that it contained higher thrills even though it just contains more painted concrete.

FoH goes 28 mph and BTMR goes 36. Space (WDW) goes 27.

BTMR does have more thrills. It’s close rockwork, tunnels, and more emphasize and heighten the speed. The track layout makes it feel more out of control. It’s the design, and why I think the design of this new coaster will give major thrills while being more accessible.

This whole family friendly thing is quite moot at this point:
1) We have no idea what the ride is going to be like
2) It's up to the park to define what they mean by it. I don't think Universal will be building a wacky-worm here...

Arguing that anything less than a 120ft+ multi-inversion coaster won't be thrilling is crazy. TH13TEEN is deemed a family-coaster but I found it pretty thrilling yet with a lower-height restriction. Taron looks insanely fun for a family-coaster.

I would be overly satisfied with that Taron coaster as a replacement. I've never seen it b4 Absolutely awesome!! Who considers that a family coaster?

Close to the ground and in tight quarters adds so much to a coaster experience. That’s why I’m not really worried about what’s coming. If it is based in a forest and low to the ground it should feel a lot more thrilling plus better themed.

I still think you all are putting too much stock in the word "family"

Wikipedia. Enthusiasts. Me :D It has a lower height restriction than your typical B&M coasters.

Yes and no. It’s going to be a much tamer coaster than DC and I honestly think it will be me Thunder Mountain than Mummy.

People keep yelling for more dark rides and less clones then want to clone mummy/gringotts for this ride. If it’s the Mack coaster with the dark ride elements, I really don’t see how anyone can complain.

I think most people consider Hippogriff a kiddie coaster because of it's stats and the fact that it's a minute long. BTMR is on another level.

I never said it did
It’s just an opinion, based on raising 2 kids. I KNOW what my children, and their social group, considered a kiddie ride, and thus beneath them. They would 100% consider that Mack coaster to be a kiddie ride and would have zero interest in riding it, and that’s even though both my kids grew up with HP and had me queuing at midnight for the books lol

From what I’ve seen of Arthur I would put it on a par with mermaid or phantom manor, or maybe even ET. How many 12/13 year olds do you see having a ball on those?

I’ve never said it had to be a scream machine for the Potter crowd. I’ve said that to round out the area it needs (imho) to be far more thrilling than that Mack coaster.

Sounds like the kids need to go to Six Flags...

Good...DC didn't hold a candle to the likes of Montu...Something like Mummy and Thunder Mountain would be great...Mummy even has a couple moments of air time..

My guess is this will be less thrilling than DC and more thrilling than Mummy.

Coaster/ride tech has come a long way. You don't need the biggest hills, crazy inversions, and extreme fast speeds for a thrilling ride when you can just use certain effects that will simulate the same things especially in an enclosed space (Fans, coaster cars that have the ability to tilt upwards to great a sense of drag to induce g-force, etc). With proper planning and execution, this ride could be more intense than Forbidden Journey.

I would say a bigger thing to look at is the ride footprint and potential duration than anything else.

I am so hoping you're right because more thrill than mummy with the theming, I can live with that all day over dragon challenge. Put it like this, I'll only be upset if it's more tame than gringotts. I'm not worried about the theming one bit lol. I love gringotts!!

I'm not so sure. Take away the concrete from BTM and it's a very mundane coaster.

that and it has THREE lift hills...how many successful coasters have that many lift hills for such a short ride? I really like BTM, I'm just saying if it were in any other park, that would probably be a nitpick.

I wish they would replace those chain lifts with lims. The clack of the rollback stops is deafening in those tunnels. Otherwise, when all the effects are working, the lifts are pretty cool. And if we could get the explosion on the 3rd lift like Disneyland has, that would really help.

I love the sound of the clanking when you going up the lift hill. It's that loud it has to be intentional surely?
