One year later and I think I may have figured out the plot for this house!
Upon burial and descent into Halmouth, death doesn't take you, instead your body is hunted down and ripped apart by the flesh eaters for as long as it takes until they finally get you. Upon your corpse being torn apart and becoming one with the flesh-like architecture, your soul is then processed into the afterlife, where the hunt continues as your spirit is broken apart.
You get to walk the stairways that lead to the proper afterlife and even get to walk right upon Death's door, but there is no escape from Halmouth. Once your soul is properly tormented and eaten away at, you return to your reborn body as a flesh eater, and the cycle continues. That's why there's cocoons of the flesh eaters, it's torn-apart bodies assimilating with the flesh in the ruin and becoming a flesh eater itself.
