My first HHN was in 2017 in Orlando and I loved every single second of it. As I left that night I had two thoughts.

1. I am going to come back every single year (A promise I have kept to myself even during COVID when things were hard)
And 2. How cool would it be to see Five Night's at Freddy’s at Halloween Horror Nights.

Here I am eight years later and my greatest wish has been officially achieved after years and years of the will it won’t it.
Welcome home Freddy and co.

Edit: Also please have actual Mr Cupcakes in your food booth this year XD

I'm really puzzled at why they didn't do it last year. Seems like they could've used that magnitude of an IP to minimize the pre-Epic attendance lull?

Could be something as simple as "negotiations took longer than expected and big animatronics take a lot of time." Logistics rule everything.

Yeah, by many accounts Universal absolutely tried to get this last year. It's not like they weren't trying. Sometimes things just don't work out, until they do. Whatever the case, it's pretty moot now since it's finally arrived.

Piggybacking off of this - i would love to truly know how all of those IP deals are worked out. Is it always Uni reaching out to the IP holder? Or is it typically vice versa? Mix of both?

I want a documentary on this lol

Same for how theme park projects are created.

It’s a mix. I’ve heard of some IP owners who reached out to Universal (I’m not mentioning who in case they’re still negotiating for the future). I know Universal has sought out specific IPs themselves.

This probably will require its own thread - but the whole process is so interesting to me. Even down to the specifics of "who" at Universal contacts "who" at the IP holder. Sending emails? Phone calls? How long are these talks typically?

It's all very interesting and a lot of it will probably never be known by the common folk!

It all depends on the specific IP. Internal IPs (like Classic Monsters) is a different process than external IPs (like, say, the Shining). Personal relationships can change the process as well (WWE went through a different process than Jason, for example).

Formally, rights are negotiated between lawyers as they develop the contract. Most major media corporations have a rights office dedicated specifically to negotiating these exact things. Officially, contact initiates through them. The process will typically involve a pitch (after which terms will be agreed upon, including merch), design approval, and a rights-holder review and approval of the near-complete project.

Universal, the parks, still retain its free-willing spirit of the aughts on the A&D side. And it is pretty integrated with Hollywood. So, lots of back doors exist.

I remember a quote from Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls, talking about working with the different Disney subsidiaries as "like having a friend who swaps out their head every few years".

Sometimes projects can be figured out with one head that can't be with another. It's part of why LotR was a no-go for so long and now is one of the top contenders for UDX expansion. Friday / Jason Universe is another example of that. Sometimes, you just need the right people to meet at the right time.

Can confirm.

I've worked with some licensors in the past, and all the different teams can want to feel like they're the "ones actually in charge".

We've pitched very specific concepts and got them approved only to have them completely reversed by a different team further down the line. To the point where the second team didn't even seem to understand what the whole idea around the project was.

Underlining this further, you often have to go through layers of approvals that aren't even necessarily across different departments. You may pitch at a lower rung of the ladder who acts as a filter before getting sent higher up, and then higher up again. You can make it all the way to the top, have the enthusiasm of a bulk of a company, and then lose it all because the principal is in a bad mood or doesn't get it.
