Put Duffy or the the Adventurers Club cast or The Horned King at D23 or along the marathon course, they'll be slammed. That doesn't mean either would support a new E-ticket. You can cater small stuff to the super fans, but anything like this needs to be four-quadrant.

Eh…maybe not if it’s just a reskin. And even nothing but super fan engagement would be an improvement over Supercharged.

Back to the Future is infinitely more well known than any of the things you mentioned. It is a draw beyond just Universal parks fans.

Back to the Future came out in 1985. I was born in 1991. Back to the Future is one of my favorite movies and, unless I truly fail as a parent, it will be one of my daughter's favorite movies as well. I was at California Adventure today and there were scores of kids screaming at Lightning McQueen. Kids that were born more than a decade after Cars was released in theaters.

Which is all to say: Yes, agreed. There are plenty of movies that have broad appeal long after their initial wave.

It's not just that it's a great trilogy of movies with iconic elements and broad appeal - that alone doesn't sustain a property's place in the minds of the general public. Universal also does a fairly good job keeping Back to the Future in the cultural conversation through regular physical media and theatrical rereleases, featuring it in LBE in various forms (including the musical), and offering plentiful, evolving merchandise.

I refuse to accept the insistence from some here that Back to the Future, Jaws, and Ghostbusters are actually niche properties no one cares about and aren't still like the biggest multi-media franchises ever.

I mean, every media property is bigger than the one beneath it.

But, I also think, there’s a difference between size/profitability and relevance. Gone With the Wind, Dr. Zhivalgo, and The Sound of Music, when adjusted for inflation, are still in the top ten for most successful films ever (Gone With the Wind remains at the top). That doesn’t mean any of them are showing up in a theme park anytime soon.

BttF is probably the most likely to return. It has a narrative weakness in that it’s “future” is a decade in the past, but the time travel conceit gives lots of wiggle room to ignore that. Ghostbusters is less likely since its attempts at re-establishing relevance have been met with either derision or apathy to diminishing returns. Neither are good, and probably worse than just being old (see BttF).

Jaws is a weird case for one reason: Shark Week. Sharks have largely shifted, culturally, from terrifying enigmas to borderline meme critters. You have Baby Shark, Left Shark, Sharknado… Jaws simply wouldn’t have the oomph it did fifty years ago. And, I think, if you even TRIED to make a serious Jaws reboot it would fall flat because sharks just aren’t really that scary anymore.

I agree on the BTTF & Ghostbusters piece, but sharks are still seen as a menacing creature. They certainly haven't lost their "edge" by any means. During Cinesational, once the Jaws section gets going, there's a large audible "it's Jaws" from the crowd... a lot of them being the younger crowd.

I don’t think anyone thinks the classic monsters are scary anymore either.

They have had some folks from the Adventurers Club on the course! Mic'd up and providing much needed motivation.

I just think there is a tendency to overcorrect on the percieved popularity of these franchises because they are some of the strongest fan demands in regards to UDX. I think it's good to be cognizant about those kinds of echo chambers as they form, but we also have to acknowledge that we're not talking about Total Recall or Pumpkinhead here. BTTF, Jaws, and Ghostbusters are big IP that would be very popular if added to the parks again.

I believe the same about the consistent second-guessing of Wicked / Oz.

Also, some properties very naturally lend themselves to theme park application.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, though an incredible movie, does not (unless Disney wants to dig back up with Russia pavilion plans for Epcot!).

I don't get why folks keep thinking about the future in BTTF when everyone just wants to go to the PAST of Hill Vallye 1950s. I think that's the way to sell it now & post BTTF The Ride.

There’s room for both. Honestly, there’s even room for the Old West. They should probably stick to 1955 and 2015 for the ride, but IMO the land should contain elements of every time period from the films.

I feel like Galaxy’s Edge proved people literally could not care less about a land being “canon”, we just wanna see all the iconic set pieces from the films.

I mean… the Hill Valley of 1955 is great for movie or show… but kinda boring for a ride. The original BttF ride highlighted how important the “flight” aspect of the Delorian is an attraction, and 1955 can’t really do anything with that in the way 2015 can.
