Honestly, the thought of Pigeon Forge a moment ago has given me an idea for a whole thread. I hope it takes off cause I'd love to learn about new crappy tourist traps from this community. :lmao:

It's a very nice park! I last went in 2022, and it retained a lot of its' more charming small-park vibes and infrastructure, while also being surprisingly sprawling and filled with great new attractions.

It is definitely leaning towards being a total coaster park. Unsure on how you feel exactly about coasters, but if you're into them, the lineup at Dollywood is honestly really great. Lots of variety, and a great sense of levelling (like a kid building up in intensity from Big Thunder to Space to RNRC) across each one so everyone can enjoy at least a couple.

I'm not a foodie, especially at theme parks, but I've heard they've got some nice stops for that too.

I gotta say though, that Pigeon Forge area around Dollywood is like if the tenants of 192 in Orlando decided they were being too tasteful. :nervous: Definitely some fun stuff over there, but man, it is so tacky and tourist-y over there haha! I kinda love it.

My coaster days are behind me. I've rode so many over the years that only the heavily themed outdoor ones like Hagrids or VC interest
me....or any old wooden coasters, which to me, are the best. But Dollywood's' live entertainment is what Alene and I will enjoy....and
you can't beat the ambiance of the Appalachians. I live in another more northern area, in the foothills, about 15-20 minutes from the
mountains, and they never cease to amaze me with their ambiance and beauty.

Never been there, but I think we'll visit within the next two years. They've taken a real run of the mill small park and completely
turned it around, while keeping a lot of the stuff, like live entertainment, that the United and Six Flags park systems abandoned.
And it's a much shorter drive from where I live than Orlando, and it's basically the same hilly mountainous terrain that I love, since that's
like my own backyard. Get a cabin and spend a week touring the area and stopping at the Vanderbilt mansion in the NC mountains nearby..

It is a great park. The theme, the entertainment, and the rides are all really nicely done. The setting is beautiful in the mountains, and the rides are enjoyable and not too aggressive. Plus, as you said, you can drive to Asheville and go see the Biltmore, which I think is basically a must do. Seeing it in May when the flowers are out is breathtaking.

Over the past few years we've been averaging about a trip a year to Dollywood. My wife has family in the area so we go see them, and take the kids to Dollywood. The mix of attractions cant be beat for a family, plenty of things for the smaller kids to do, whole family attractions, thrill coasters for the teens/adults, and shows and exhibits galore. And the train, the sound of that train rumbling through the hills will stick with you long after you leave. To me its as quintessential an experience as turning the corner and seeing the castle at MK, or walking through the Hogsmeade gate and seeing Hogwarts.

I really think its a far better whole family experience than anything Orlando has to offer. This sounds like its going to fit right in on the whole family level experience.

Going in October for the fall/Halloween decorations was really nice. Though no haunts (which I don't mind at all), the decorations and lights were awesome. The only funky thing is the layout. Due to the terrain, they basically have you walk in a loop and so there isn't an easy way to get from Big Bear Mountain to Lightning Rod. I want to go for the Christmas lights one time. I can definitely see a trip next year to hit this new ride which looks like a lot of fun.

We went during Christmas Last year, the train loop was decorated, lights everywhere, Christmas themed shows, it was really well done.

We stayed at the Dream More resort and it was decorated as well. The resort also had activities for the kids throughout the day, like cookie decorating with an Elf, writing letters to Santa, Ornament painting, etc. Hit the park in the morning for some rides and shows, back to the hotel for the kids to have some down time doing a relaxing activity, then back to the park after dark for the lights.

Having to walk uphill both ways to get anywhere does take a toll on you, but if you plan ahead and keep you day headed in one direction its not too bad.

I'm going in October for the second time. My third visit in three years.

Last year Dollywood closed on the 31st for three days - then opened with all the Christmas stuff up and running. I loved seeing both on one trip.

This year they are closing from Oct 28 to Nov 1. I head back home on the 6th so I'll be able to see both again.

Did not realize we'd be getting a rocking boat so soon.

How exactly is this opening in the Spring when the showbuilding wasn't even enclosed a month ago?

Probably depends on definition of "spring". I don't anticipate this opening before June but hopefully I am very wrong.

Again, still seems awfully early when the showbuilding wasn't enclosed a month ago. Maybe regional parks just do things differently then Disney or Universal.

I’m in Dollywood this week. The show building still isn’t enclosed. You can see some track and what looks like the beginnings of rock work. It looks so small. I mean it’s a big building but seems small for such an ambitious ride. It’s been crazy crowded - both the last day of the Fall Festival and the first day of Christmas.

I think that they are also doing a $5 ticket special for the first week of November which was expected to drive crowding.

We did an unexpected trip to Dollywood this last weekend! I have mixed feelings.

(Kid and his wife live about 90 miles away, and they had comped tickets because her mom is a teacher in the area).

I haven't been here in about 20 years and, man, things have changed. :lmao:

Such a weird dichotomy between wholesome country restaurants, Dolly exhibits, family shows, and... coasters, coasters and more coasters!

Lightning Rod is freaking great. Reminds me of Iron Gwazi but I'm not sure if it is just because of the look or not. It's fast! In fact the park is a lot like Busch Gardens in that it has like one-of-each type of coaster. ThunderHead also rocks. Wild Eagle was surprisingly fun. The rest I have done before in other places.

Pretty fun but I'm glad I didn't shell out for a hotel stay or bother to rope drop. Lines were long so we ducked out for an early dinner and came back to shorter lines after 6.

They did have a nice fireworks and drome show at closing.

6 out of 10. :)

Just got back from our trip to Tennessee which included a couple days at Dollywood. We went opening day (Friday) and on Sunday. The park was very crowded on Friday and our travel partners were, ah, not quite up to the challenge of getting on the road in time. Add in traveling with a couple of one-year-olds and that none of us had the appetite to shell out $600 to skip lines... I tried to keep my expectations in check.

Anyway, between the two days the only coasters I missed out on were Firechaser Express and Mystery Mine (which is still closed, though it's testing). We didn't expect the new ride to be open and it doesn't appear to be that close. There's a lot of track lying on the ground outside the show building, which has (understandably) not been fully enclosed.

IMG_3537.jpeg

Lightning Rod is awesome. I got to do this a couple of times and it's one of the best coasters I've been on. Thunderhead is similarly very good, surprisingly so given its age. Wild Eagle was a lot of fun and offers great views of the park and even Tennessee Tornado was smoother than I expected.

Fire in the Hole is an absolutely bizarre ride. If you can go in blind... do so. I didn't know what to expect and it's very weird (this is a compliment!)

Otherwise, the vibe of the park is immaculate. The location is lovely, the food we had was great and everywhere you go Dolly's music follows. It's really great. It's clearly a very good family park, but probably more so for kids 5 and up. There was very little for the girls to do, and even the rides without height requirements didn't allow any lap sitting (which is allowed on virtually every attraction without a height requirement at Disneyland).

IMG_3465.jpeg

It's also pretty clear to me that they oversell their skip-the-line pass. Hotel guests get a limited-use version of it, which I imagine is part of the problem, but they also struggle with proper line merging by asking the grouper at the station to scan passes before assigning rows.

And, one last gripe, they have a parent swap system ... but it requires you to bring the kid in line with you all the way up to the boarding area. On some of these rides, it then requires you to lift the kid over the coaster to transfer them to your partner. This is... stupid. But they're clearly not going to pay a ride host to stand outside the entrance nor are they going to pay someone to enforce a merge point and a grouper. That is lame. Not Six Flags lame, but lame nonetheless.

Anyway, we had a good time. It strikes me as a great season pass holder park because there's so much to see and do without ever getting in line for a ride.

No! We did not partake in any of the Pigeon Forge activities, though the boat ride was what I was most tempted by. We did a couple breweries, a distillery tasting and spent a day at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (which ripped). I have a hunch we'll be back in a few years when The Baby is no longer A Baby, and more of this kind of stuff will be back on the menu.

Agreed, Lightning Rod is awesome, and Blazing Fury ("fire in the hoooole!") is downright bonkers. I love them so much. :lmao:

Might have to make a trip out to Dollywood again in the near future to check out Night Flight Expedition.

Dollywood is such a fantastic park. Lighting Rod is insane, family coasters are loads of fun, Blazing Fury is a classic I love going on several times, Tennessee Tornado has got to be the smoothest Arrow looper I’ve ever been in, the food is great, ambiance is amazing…so much to love about this park.

Oh and the nearby mountain coasters are great too!

The 35-second loop they play in the queue is incredible. It walked so Cranky Kong could run*
