Dark Universe - General Discussion Thread

I don’t say this to negatively talk about Epic Universe, but, for my BF I’m worried there’s truly so much downtown an issues with this park I’m wondering if we wait for a trip. Not trying to be dramatic, I just feel every month there’s something major going on. It’s not appealing, but, maybe I just read forums daily too.

I truly never expected to be in summer 2026 and still regularly hear about many/most of the Monsters Unchained AAs being down frequently.

For various reasons, my upcoming trip in November is locked into place, but if I wasn't already committed to November, I'd be seriously thinking about postponing (again).

I really hope my group and I get lucky when we visit. I'm not going to say the ride is the whole reason I'm visiting the park... but it's easily the thing I'm most invested in seeing.

AA's can be tricky, especially if they are a lot of movement. Heck, Disney has trouble with Kylo Ren and even having the laser cannon effects working (for different reasons on the cannons). The pre-show AA's for Monsters are great but, if they have errors, the entire preshow loses its steam. It's really a no-win situation for Universal. They use screens and are met with sarcastic or scathing comments. They use AA's and have the same thing when the robots break. Maybe Universal needs to upgrade the maintenance or robot technician teams. It's just a lot of moving parts to have all work perfectly.

On the other hand, when guests are paying close to $200/day to visit, they aren't paying to see statues.

Having posted a week or so ago about a day with lots and lots of animatronics down, I should in fairness also say that later in the week was much better. Several runs with almost everything working (although Drac was in limited movement mode for my entire trip, and likewise the hunchback bell). So @Cup_Of_Coffee @belloq87 you may well be fine on your trips, it’s a bit of pot luck I think. But it seems they are trying, and haven’t just given up on things.

You put on the best show you can each day. Same for theater as it is for theme parks.

I'd venture a guess that if you were to go on the ride, there's a 95% chance that everything will be fine

Yeah, across 2 trips (August and October of 2025) and 6 different park days, i have yet to see the animatronics on Monsters at 100% as that dang finale Drac eludes me. However, even on the days where stuff wasn't working the best in the morning (pre-show down//T-posing Victoria//Static Wolfman), I found that all of those things were fixed as the day went on. So, all in all, if your first run is rough - just try it again in another couple hours and i'd say you have more than a 50% shot that the stuff will be back up.

Ministry on the other hand... i had a buddy who was there last week and said Ministry shut down 3 different times he tried queuing for it and he never actually ended up getting on it and they only had the ONE day there. To miss out on a marquee attraction on my only day there would definitely bum me out.

It’s important to have perspective, for example Wilderness Lodge is on day 7 of an A/C outage and now Kidani is having issues. Things happen.

Theme park trips are so dang expensive I get the urge to try to wait till things are perfect. In general, I struggle with "all or nothing thinking" (as my therapist used to say) in many aspects of life. I've been trying more recently to let things be imperfect and embrace the grey areas.

To be fair, I think I still would've had a mini breakdown if Stardust was closed or not dueling when I was there, so I can't act too enlightened. But I never saw Monsters Unchained run perfectly (the Frankenstein that grabs the electricity nodes was down, which doesn't seem that common from all the talk I've seen here), and I still think it's the best dark ride of the modern era.

Downtime is the tradeoff for ambition. Maybe there were a couple moments where they could have developed a more satisfying b-mode, but I'm glad they took big swings with this ride.

Yeah - I think the issue is, this stuff happens like @Parkscope Joe said.

You could wait a year for Monsters to be "better", but maybe in a year it's COMPLETELY down for a 2 week refurb - rather than just having 1 or 2 AAs down. Maybe in 6 months, Monsters is fine but Stardust is down.

Speaking of - how come Disneyland got their cannons working on Rise yet Orlando can't seem to. Weird

I was thinking about your other comment regarding when a ride is down all day. To me, this goes back to the lack of capacity. At Magic Kingdom (a fully mature park), if Pirates is down all day, you have other rides to enjoy. Now, I will be disappointed if it happens (and it has) but I have enough other rides to make up for it. If Monsters goes down, Epic loses a foundational ride with great capacity and doesn't have enough to soak up the disgruntled masses. Plus, it anchors the entire land and then Dark Universe is just a forbidding walkthrough with a low capacity coaster. One ride makes up 9% of the total ride count but Monsters' capacity is probably a higher %.

I agree but this conversation is in discussion about figures being down not rides.

The Monsters Unchained AAs can go up or down several times each day but I've had more luck with them being up more in the mornings rather than later in the day. The good thing is the wait is rarely over 15-20 mins so it's not hard to do a few runs on the ride at different points of the day. I don't think stressing about how many of the AAs on the ride are working is the biggest thing to worry about when visiting the park. I'd prioritize getting on Ministry or rides in Nintendo if you've just got one day in the park and no express.

We had real good luck with Monsters the previous Sunday. With only three rides open for most of the late afternoon due to a very brief '10 minute thunderstorm'(lightening in the central Florida area standards, I guess, kept all outdoor rides and Dragons show closed down for three to four hours and the Arcanus show is closed until July), there wasn't really anything to do, so we ended up riding Monsters six times for the day. Not necessarily a bad thing since the ride is 'great'. As far as I could discern, most everything was working well.

Note to myself. Isn't there lightening almost every Orlando summer afternoon?

Disneyland management is willing to put in the money, downtime, and effort to fix it. WDW management is not.

Yeah, that was the exact precipitation forecast for 11 of our 13 days. ........ They closed the hotel pools down just about every day for two to three hours, even though it only rained twice. I guess if there's lightening somewhere in Central Florida, it's a shut down. Universal should never build another outdoor attraction at Epic, at least until they get 9 or 10 indoor attractions.

It has to be 15 mins. without any lightning strikes within a 10 mile radius of the resort. Same at Disney.

Just got a notification from Weather.com that today's light show should start in about a half an hour.

Edit: second notification says the 3 o'clock light show has been canceled due to technical difficulties. But the 5 o'clock show should go on as scheduled.
