Somehow looks worse than Supergirl. Also, for a movie whose main draw is RDJ, they really aren't communicating that Dr. Doom is RDJ in the trailer?

I Hope this year is a sign that the whole era of movies like this is dying.

I watch this trailer and...
9ba6b820-380c-47ea-81b0-2e3d78c899f3_text.gif

If you told me ten years ago that we were going to get a “Doctor Doom vs. the Avengers” movie from the MCU team, I’d be unbelievably excited.

But everything I’ve heard about what’s happening in this movie is deeply questionable (if not outright stupid and insulting), creatively.

With a budget of $400 mil, and Dune competing directly against it, if this movie ends up with average or sub par reviews and below typical BO returns, you’d have to think they re evaluate the Marvel business moving forward. If a movie this stuffed with characters both new and old can’t attract an audience enough to be a billion dollar blockbuster, no future film will (save for maybe Spider-Man).

That said - I’m still hedging on this being a $1-1.5 bil success. The question just becomes is it a success enough that they don’t backtrack from Secret Wars (which I believe has still not entered principal photography). A movie that will most likely be even more expensive as the ultimate transition film for the MCU.

Trailer is meh

But all the theaters are sold out near me in the premium theaters so it seems like it will still do well

I hope it’s good but they it’s hard because their is little to no real set up vs the stones being their since phase 1 and civil war being a huge event that leads to the infinity war situation

Although I continue to not be a fan of RDJ's casting and how the whole thing feels like it will just be cameo fest, I'll still be watching. I hate the fact that they put tickets on sale 5 whole months early, because who the hell knows where you'll be or what plans will come up.

Also, I understand the pessimism when it comes to Marvel but lets be real: Dune 3 will absolutely not come close to winning this release date battle LOL

2 indie horror movies made more than Moana and Star Wars combined.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but I feel like the tide has been shifting on the CGI-cash-grab IP films.

I don’t understand the lack of hype on here. Can someone help me understand why this is getting crapped on? Besides the usual “I’m tired of superhero movies” reason?

God these muddy visuals after watching The Odyssey, it's like having a fine wine and then going back to stuff from a gas station rack.

Betting they used AI to help Downey with his accent (I'm ok with this). Hopefully, that's the only thing they used AI for.

I get your point, but I wouldn't use the Dwayne 'Moana' Johnson movie and the Mandalorian movies as examples LOL

What should I use then? Masters of the Universe? Supergirl? Minions 3?

SW begins filming next month I think. If not then, then early September. It'll be filming for 3-4 months by the time Doomsdayc comes out. Nothing Doomsday could do would stop it from releasing. 1B is a disaster for this. It's gonna have a floor I'd say of 1.7

The fact this has been out for 95 minutes and hasn’t been posted yet really says a lot about Marvel right now.

That said - this looks so epic!

None of those movies are great examples because none of them compare to a major event movie like the Avengers.

I loved Obsession, (Backrooms not so much), but using them to say the tide is shifting isn't that accurate. We could spend the rest of the day listing the reasons why stuff like Moana and He-Man flopped, but the new Spiderman won't have that problem.

The box office is in a weird place right now. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what's a hit anymore. Moana flopped, but Lilo & Stitch didn't.

Spider-Man is almost certainly going to put up huge numbers. Meanwhile, I'm genuinely shocked Minions isn't doing better, because it's actually really good.

I think Lilo & Stitch not flopping has a lot to do with the original movie being almost 25 years old LOL

Yeah, maybe

I'm honestly shocked it flopped THAT hard - but that's for a different thread.

In general, I think it's a combination of the previous MCU Phases not generating any momentum or excitement for what his movie is going to be (in contrast with the Phase leading up to INFINITY WAR, which was all about teasing/setting the stage for that) and a general lack of real interest in much of the post-ENDGAME Marvel product. Bringing back Evans and Downey also threatens to weaken ENDGAME's finality in retrospect.

And for myself, I know quite a bit about this movie's rumored plot, and if accurate, it sounds incredibly dumb to me.

Just read the leaked plot synopsis for Doomsday, and it sounds mostly accurate to what we see in the trailer. There are, of course, moments in the trailer that are not referenced or mentioned in the plot leak, leaving enough room for the leak to potentially still be fake. Didn't hate what I read, as it sounds to me, if it ends up being true, to be a perfectly acceptable and fun film. Will be interesting to watch the final product and see how much the leak nailed or didn't nail.
