News came down yesterday that Universal is ending Express on Hagrids beginning 7/1/26. Lucky that we will be at Portofino for the first phase of our June vacation, so I'll make sure to get a ton of rides in before Express ends. Some speculation that there was guest dissatisfaction from both stand by and express guests. I fully understand the stand by issues, times did jump a lot. But I monitor these times daily and the only times I saw long express times was Saturday afternoons after 4:00 PM when the Premier AP's flood the parks and Hagrids especially. Saturdays are always crowded with AP's so that's to be expected. Even when I have hotel express, I don't spend a lot of time in IOA and USF on Saturdays because I know that the express lines get longer than normal after 4:00 PM.

Getting packed and ready to leave tomorrow. The grandkids finished school yesterday and they'll stay overnight so we can get out of here early tomorrow morning. After a night in Brunswick Georgia for a stayover, we'll drive to Orlando. The girls think we're just going to Cabana Bay for the entire vacation, but we're surprising them with the first part of the vacation at Portofino. They will be so amazed. They are always appreciative and never demanding. Their parents are poor, so the only time they're able to experience what the world has is when we take them somewhere. We try to broaden their experiences all year round, and occasionally with a special vacation like this. When we took them to WDW two summers ago for a long vacation, the oldest one exclaimed "When I'm older and make lots of money, I'm coming back here".

Universal will be just right for them now. At 13 and 12 the park is a perfect fit. After the start at Portofino, we'll move to Cabana Bay for eight more nights. I'm sure they'll love Cabana too. It has a lot to offer for teens. They want to go to Epic too. They're both big fans of Nintendo and HTTYD so those will be the first two lands we visit. Hopefully Mario Kart will be running more reliable. Lately it seems that MK and Ministry take turns being inoperative during the early part of the day.

They'll love those Hotel Express Passes at IOA and USF. They experienced a lot of long lines at WDW (which has gotten better since their trip since Disney cracked down on the widespread Disability fraud), so those short lines when they're at Portofino will be a nice surprise. So we'll be riding the Universal D/E ticket attractions mostly during the first part of the trip and we'll leave the shows & short line attractions for the Cabana Bay portion of the trip. This is a nice long vacation, so we'll slow it down for them. No ride commando stuff. Lots of pool and other fun stuff. This will be a very different feel for them compared to WDW. I've told them there will be no hectic and a lot of lovely relaxation.

See you all in a few weeks. I always go dark while on vacation. No overt high tech distractions allowed. :) :) :) :) :)

Sounds awesome!

CBBR used to be our "homebase" but we haven't been there for a few years due to the pool to room ratio.

If you haven't been, the new(ish) milk shake shack in Bayliner Diner is awesome. Get some shakes at the end of the day, grab a round booth, and melt into those 1950's commercials...

Have fun!

Back from our two week Universal vacation with the granddaughters. We took them to WDW two years ago for a shorter ten day vacation. Vacation with kids is certainly a different perspective than our usual adult vacations of just me and Alene.

A Tale of Two Girls........... Scarlett is 13 and the more daring of the two . Her sister Layla is 12 and doesn't care much for coasters, though she'll give some of them a try, but only once, never twice. The only exception is Slinky at DHS, which she loved, and forced us to wait in line three times, each well over an hour, at DHS in the hot hot hot Toy Story Land sun and concrete.

The girls are a lesson for theme park management. Namely, you need a diversified attraction line up to satisfy your guests, especially families. Layla loved USF, especially all the simulators, but didn't care for Epic because, short of Monsters which she loved, there wasn't any other rides she liked or wanted to ride. Scarlett 'loved' IOA and USF, and liked Epic. Both of them liked Universal better than Disney, especially the Hotel Express passes, hotels, boat transportation, and pools. Even concerning attractions/rides they liked Universal better, especially Scarlett just loving the indoor and outdoor coasters, as much as Layla hated the coasters she tried.

Next: Portofino Bay Surprise

Portofino....La Dolce Vita (The Sweet Life)....

We arrived from the overnight in New Brunswick around 11:00 AM. Alene and I played the hotel subterfuge perfectly. As I said previously, the girls thought the entire vacation would be at Cabana Bay. But, searching the hotel costs weekly, I was able to take advantage of some great rates at Portofino, our go to hotel that we've been to over 120 nights. We took the exit off of I4 that passes right by Cabana Bay. Loudly, I asked Alene to check her phone to see if the room at Cabana was ready. She said, 'nothing yet'. So, I told the girls that I was going to drive over to Portofino, the crown jewel hotel for Universal, so they could see where the VIP's and wealthy people stay. I also told them that the guests there get unlimited front of the line passes to all the rides at USF and IOA. When we turned onto the Portofino entrance road there was lots of ohs and ahhs coming from the back seat. That is really a beautiful entry with the lagoon and piazza in view. When we got to the hotel entrance, I said ,"We have lots of time. I'll park, and we can walk around the hotel grounds". We walked through the lobby, down the stairs to that fabulous piazza, and then to the balcony overlooking the fab family pool, dominated by the ruins of a Roman aqueduct. Scarlett and Layla's eyes were sparkling. Then I told them I was surprising them with the first week of vacation staying at Portofino. Instantly, the two biggest smiles I've ever seen on their faces.

We checked in (See the check in story on the Portofino hotel thread). The day hotel manager gave them a special greeting, and I bought them seasonal annual passes at the hotel ticket office. That is so quick and convenient. At Christmas I had given them Wicked and Gryffindor lanyards. Now, they knew what they were for. They put their hotel keys (express passes) on, and we were off to USF while we waited for our room to be readied. We got on the water taxi, and Layla exclaimed, "This is awesome". Their eyes were gleaming through that ride past the great landscaping and the reveal of CityWalk and USF. We rode DM Minion Mayhem, Race Through NY, Transformers, Simpsons in quick order. The girls loved all the screen rides, and rode each of them 7 or 8 times during the vacation. We then did Mummy and Gringotts. Scarlett loved them. She is really into high thrills and coasters. Layla, who doesn't like coasters, gave them a try but she said once was enough and never rode them again. The girls loved those express passes, walk on every time. Two years ago when we took them to WDW, before Disney cleaned up the disability pass fraud, the lines were mostly long in the heat. No lines at Universal were a stark difference. We had a late lunch at Mels' and then our room was ready.

We took the boat back to Portofino and the management had given us a complimentary upgrade to the larger Villa room with a private patio adjacent to the beautiful Italian Formal Pool and gardens. Our reservation was for the much less expensive standard garden view room. To our amazement, this was the same exact room that Portofino gave us as a complimentary upgrade during our past November vacation. And in the room was a huge Basket of Cheer with treats & snacks, and a nice signed welcome note from VIP coordinators Matthew Rogers and Alexa Perez.

We unpacked and the girls wanted to go to the pool immediately. We went to the pool and the four of us were the only ones in the pool, with a handful of guests lounging on the chairs. Scarlett and Layla then proceeded to make You Tube videos in the privacy of what was almost a private pool. During this stay, that pool would be like their own private oasis.

We also went to the Family Pool and they did a water slide for the first time of their lives. Evening on the piazza with two excellent Sal's pizzas, and a gelato for the girls, while the Italian singers sang. And Alene and I had a glass of wine on our private patio to finish up the evening while the girls were on their phones bragging to their friends back home. ....A truly magical day.

Day Two Portofino: Late morning/early afternoon

We surprised the girls with room service breakfast. We ordered their favorite breakfast foods. When the cart arrived, they were still in bed just awakening. They had no idea what was going on since the only other time they were in a hotel room was when we took them to Disney two summers ago. Talk about a surprised look on their faces! The Portofino room service is very elegant and impressive. We've done it occasionally in the past. They got dressed and we ate at the outside patio table,

Then off to IOA. Rode Cat in the Hat first to start easy. Alene and I like that ride, but the girls didn't. They thought the Seuss characters were creepy. Next up was Hulk. We all rode that. Scarlett loved it, Layla said never again. We've never rode Storm since we rarely do fast flat spinners, but we thought the girls would like it. Nope, they thought it was meh. They said the Kennywood flat rides were all better. Scarlett had a hat on, and she got a ton of autographs from the Marvel characters. The day before she had gotten an autograph from the younger good looking Marilyn Monroe. The next day she bought a Spiderman hoodie and wore it constantly in the hotel room. Then we rode Spiderman twice. Both girls loved this amazing attraction. We walked through Toon Lagoon. On another day Scarlett and I would do both Dudley and Popeye twice. On that day, Lyla would go to USF & CityWalk with Alene. Layla doesn't like water rides. We all did Kong. Universally loved by all four of us.

Before the vacation, Scarlett debated whether she would be brave enough to do Velocicoaster. When she saw it going through that winding rock formation, she was hooked. I rode it with her while Alene and Layla sat on a bench in the shade (Epic take note, shade exists in the other two parks) :lmao: ...She absolutely loved Velocicoaster. She had the biggest smile during and after the ride. She immediately said it's the best ride she's ever been on at WDW, Kennywood, and now Universal. That would never drop from the number 1 rating for the rest of the vacation, and she rode it two additional times during the trip. Then we walked into Hogsmeade and rode Forbidden Journey. The girls loved it. Then we all rode Hagrids. Scarlett wanted to do it a second time so the two of us got back in line. Express waits were only around 10 to 15 minutes. Stand by was only listed at 60 minutes and barely extended outside the ride building. We finished up with Seuss trolley and then boated back to Portofino. Scarlett loved IOA. It was a bit too tough for Layla (12) though, that's because she's not a coaster person yet.

Afternoon/Evening Second Day at Portofino...

Hot afternoon and the girls, und us, wanted pool time. We spent some time at the Formal Pool and then we went over to the Family Pool. I ordered dinner at the pool, plus Alene and I had a Pina Colada, frozen of course. It was hot hot hot. After they ate, the girls spent some time in the hot tub/jacuzzi. They loved that.

It was around 7;00 PM so back to the room for a shower. We went down to the main Piazza (there's quite a few throughout Portofino), and the girls had a gelato again. Around 9:00 PM Scarlett said, "Can we go to CityWalk", So we hopped on the boat, CityWalk bound. The girls shopped at the huge Universal store and they really like the Festival booths too. I had given the girls a few hundred dollars each to buy themselves and friends gifts. Layla is really into Anime now, so she bought a couple of shirts there since there were a bunch of Anime clothes booths. The girls loved all that bright neon at CityWalk. It's so alive.
