I don't think anyone is calling it a bold creative decision. I think most of the defenses of this zone are really just arguing that this is another spooky IP at an event that has had a couple of wonky IP choices clearly driven by execs for the last 15-20 years. I think it's fair to question this choice and have some skepticism, but some of the reactions to the announcement of one scarezone have been ridiculous. Even if the zone is bad, it's not going to ruin the event lineup.

At the end of the day, UO is a company that's looking to maximize profits. Worst case scenario, it's a one for me, one for you kind of approach. Creatives might get what they want in terms of original houses (and IPs), but that might come with having one property that is commercially viable. I don't see that as a bad thing. It's not as if we're getting a Today Show scarezone or The View haunted house.

I think a lot of HHN fans need to start having a moment where they realize that we’ve done it. We’ve done the grails. They’re almost all gone. We’ve done multiple Evil Dead’s, Texas Chainsaws, Halloweens, Elm Streets, Trick r Treats, Killer Klowns, Jasons, Saws, etc. We’ve driven into movies, we’ve done games, we’ve seen incredibly niche TV. We’re finally getting Hellraiser. Many of the ones left are either in rights-holder limbo or held up in other ways. At a certain point, it’s time to either get weird with the IPs, get incredibly niche, or drill repeats into the ground.

This isn’t the first “weird” IP and it won’t be the last. If your focus is on worrying about Universal chasing the bag, that’s your prerogative. Have at it. Hold that fire in your heart lol. But I’m here for giving the weirdness a shot each and every time.

Not saying Marty is like this, but I've noticed a certain level of parasocial relationship to this event that adding Fortnite is some sort of PERSONAL affront to their sesnabilites. It's a halloween event, not a wedding.

I think this specific post is two AI-generated images, but I have seen some very real ones that have definitely been acting that way.

While my gaming days are more or less over, I know nothing about the game, I'm willing to take in this zone as original and try to appreciate the design for what it is. Will I know what it relates to or what's going on? No. Will that really matter though? No. If the design is good and it has the Halloween feel, why should I care? I learned a lesson last year with Hatchet & Chains. I thought at first glance that it would be kind of silly. It ended up being one of my faves. Same thing with Terrifier - didn't want to watch the movies as the whole gore thing isn't my gig, and I was told it was close to torture porn. Hard pass. So, I didn't watch the movies. However, I LOVED the house! The character of Art the Clown speaks for himself whether you saw the movies or not. It wasn't hard to understand. After that experience, I've learned it's not wise to underestimate what Uni can pull off with any property. Sometimes it's an epic fail (see Crypt TV or even the last Chucky), but sometimes they can really surprise you. Wait until the event, experience it all and then judge. Otherwise, you're just selling yourself short.

I think that’s a fair way of looking at it. I still don’t love the choice, and I don’t think questioning the direction is unreasonable, but on reflection I was probably arguing more from emotion than I realised.
My opinion has softened. If it ends up being a genuinely creative take on Fortnitemares, I’ll happily admit I was wrong. If it doesn’t, then at least I’ll be criticising the execution rather than the announcement.

I know what Fortnite is and I know why it’s so popular, so my only curiosity is how the zone is going to work. My closest frame of reference in my time attending the event is probably Anarch-ade from 2019.

I’m picturing there being a Battle Bus mini stage show like the Cat Lady house, Fortnitemare characters roaming, and lots of vibrant game graphic colors being used in the lighting.

I think it might go for more Horror Vibes then this but I think at times it will be a party, and the most similar thing I can think of is Screambreak

I’ve said similar in the past, but, it can be said again this year too: if you’re *really* against this inclusion but are still planning on attending you can avoid this zone. It’ll be a longer walk but you can navigate the park in a way that bypasses it entirely. Personally, I only know of it as a video game that once featured Sabrina Carpenter but other than that have zero idea what it is but hopefully it’ll be enjoyable!

As an adult that plays Fortnite, who has a handful of friends aged 30+ who also play the game, I find the discourse around this exhausting. The idea that Fortnite is a "kids game" is so outdated at this point. They have Art the Clown in the game. Like come on lol.

Something I haven't really seen anyone mention - the whole game is based around characters running around with guns shooting each other. Like, guns are a huge part of the game. I know Universal has started to shy away from featuring guns at the event, so do we expect that to be part of this zone? I know they mentioned it being a "battleground", but if the characters aren't shooting each other then how exactly are they battling?
