So far the best theme park rides I have been on have been IOA Spider Man for the Universal parks and for Disney Rise hands down.

In fact on a trip to LA last year, my family and I first stopped at DLR. I was able to talk my parents into going on Rise. They were hesitant at first since they don't usually care for theme park rides, but they were extremely glad they got to do it. My dad even said Rise was hands down the best theme park ride he's ever been on.

I’m gonna throw a wildcard: Timber Mountain Log Ride. For the kind of ride that it is, the time it gives you; the emotions it brings and the vibes it has, it’s easily one of the best water rides in the world for a reason. It’s also a major comfort ride for me.

Have you noticed the Cyberdyne logo that's still there on those doors? That was left over from the Terminator 5D show.

But yeah this is a....woefully executed copyright infringement ride. It's literally just Minion Mayhem with some unneccessary flux capacitors rising from the stage. Like why?

I wonder if Universal knows about this themselves. If they do, that park should be lucky they haven't pursued any legal action against them.

Anyone else feel that storytelling can be a little overrated at times regarding parks? I hear common complaints about Forbidden Journey and Orlando’s Mummy in that their stories suck, but both are fast-paced thrill rides while the former is meant to be a celebration of the movies and the latter accurately reflects the hokey silliness of the Mummy movies.

I believe pacing, spectacle, and cohesion are far more important than storytelling for most rides.

The story of IoA Spider-Man is probably the most generic story you could possibly tell with the character, with no interesting twists or quirks. If the narrative were to be adapted into a comic or a film, it would be laughably basic and one-note. But the visual and tactile spectacle, incredible pacing, and thematic cohesion from scene to scene make it one of the best attractions ever built.

Attractions like Battle at the Ministry, Zootopia: Better Zoogether, or even haunts like Orlando's UCM: Eternal Bloodlines sag under the weight of their own narratives. Themed attractions have a limited amount of time to get across a story, and the primary audience does not hold deep storytelling as a priority compared to familiar iconography and plain fun factor. Simple narratives often give room for rides to stretch and show off really cool setpieces, as opposed to long stretches of characters giving exposition that most of the audience isn't interested in.

Rides like FJ falter a bit with cohesion. Spider-Man leaps between setpieces in similar ways, going from underground wastewater systems to rising above the NYC skyline in a matter of seconds, but the subtle invisible line connecting each location from scene to scene is done so perfectly you don't even notice the transitions.

FJ will go from daytime to nighttime in a flash, have Harry and Ron hanging out between classes less than a minute before being involved in a massive Quidditch match, and ending with the entire extended cast cheering on a few non-Wizards who didn't do anything. Narratively, it's nonsense - written down, it's almost dreamlike in its' inconsistencies - but it also wonderfully captures the spectacle and iconography of the series in a well-paced tactile manner, so it's largely okay.

It could be improved, but in worrying too much about cohesion, you might write yourself into a corner; like Ministry, where you spend the first third of the ride stiffly explaining away why Umbridge is here. You don't need to do that. Hagrid lost a dragon, here they are. Look, it's Quidditch! It's Dementor time now. You can actually just commit to whatever, and most people will go along, so long as it's suitably cool and fun.

The fun thing is that all three of those above components are storytelling. It's just that theme park attractions require a different pen than a show, game, or comic would.

Ironically, if it had the basic plot of Hagrid’s just about everything besides the Quidditch scene would fit perfectly. Idk, having a narrative that makes some sense (however basic it is) should be considered, if dark rides are a form of storytelling.

I agree, and it is a mark against the ride for me as well. I just think its' priorities are straightened out more than something like Ministry.

I also agree that Hagrid's basic plot works really solidly as a throughline tying different setpieces and rollercoaster tricks together. and I actually think once you get past the slightly overlong preshow sections, Gringotts has probably the best narrative of any non-Cirque Potter headliner.

I really believe the best case scenario is to tell a simple but involved narrative that accounts for those cohesive elements, while also not allowing any of that to scrimp or rule out those big wow-moments that a big impressive theme park ride needs. It's why Rise of the Resistance is an all-timer. I'd argue the same for Expedition Everest and Monsters Unchained. A good number of narrative twists and turns throughout, but always leading with spectacle and physical motion first, and always tying back to the simple elevator pitch narrative core.

Whenever I ride Ministry I try not to think about how much money and effort went into all that time we spend just listening all that stiff expository dialogue.

Peak Theme Park:
-ToT DHS
-Rise DHS/DLR (surprised this one hasn’t been mentioned yet, I love that ride, makes you feel like you’re in the movies and it’s a nearly a 30 min experience)
-Indy DLR
-Radiator Springs Racers DLR
-Pirates DLR: The bayou, setting, going off into the abyss and falling off the world, the pirate grotto, the town scenes and then the burning inferno and our miraculous escape
-MIB
-Spider Man
-Monsters Unchained
-Hogwarts Express: Folks this is the best HP ride, ultimate wish fulfillment, and straight out of the movies, just perfect.
-Jurassic Park River Adventure: Cheezy promo videos, puts in a scene from the book cut from the movie, does the plot and every single set piece you would want to see after watching the movie
-Phantom Mannor-I love the HM dearly, but giving it an actual plot and making it integral to the land and other rides there puts this on a whole new level.

I think some of these aspects of storytelling are at their best when there are narrative gaps that allow the guest to insert themselves into. Sometimes that’s the best storytelling these theme parks can do. It allows for large scale inclusion, and potential draw for people to come back and continue re-inserting themselves into timeless properties.

Mine would be pretty close to that with only Spaceship Earth out of a top category.
