Confession time: I've never been to USH. In all my trips to LA I've either 1) never had access to a vehicle or 2) only spent time in south LA/between LA/SD. I have an upcoming Escape from the Cold trip for late February to LA and I'm staying in Downtown LA for several events. I had one full day available and have decided to do USH and the VIP tour that day with some friends. Any tips or advice? Places to get dinner in CityWalk?

IMO, Vivo is the most underrated restaurant in Citywalk. Woodford Reserve is their well, and cocktails are in the $14-16 range last I checked, better than anything you’ll see in the park and even many of the other restaurants.

With VIP, you won’t need to really plan, as you’ll get priority access to everything.

There’s a tiny little Irish pub (more like an indoor stand, think Bar Moonshine) marooned amidst Despicable Me and Pets, a holdover from Baker Street. The drinks aren’t anything super special, and the hours are weird, but it’s an in-park spot to get a real cocktail.

Most characters roam the upper lot and emerge between the Animation Store and NYC facades. Many are given a lot of room to improvise and interact with one another, and the performers are terrific. If you enjoy that sort of thing, it’s worth lingering or doing a loop every now and again.

shhhhh………

if you’re staying downtown, just keep in mind traffic can be ass on weekday mornings. if you’re close to a metro stop, taking the red line can be more convenient but it’s a long way to hollywood from union station. that said, it’s nice to avoid traffic and not have to designate a driver if you take the train.
