Bringing Evans back speaks to an extreme lack of confidence on Marvel's part.

100% agree

Besides Falcon (which is only in one movie and a TV show)

Most the characters did not get a chance

Thor was not liked until his 3rd solo movie and like 5th film he was in

Dr Strange was not loved until after Infinity war

I didn't care for Captain America until Winter Solider then he was my favorite character

Its just a joke how the old MCU gave characters time to grow and now its.....ohhh Shang Chi don't make a billion....no more movies or tv shows for you

They played their hand very poorly after end game and this sucks....now we are just back to where we were 4 years ago

I'd argue desperation rather than a lack of confidence.

But we already knew that with the RJD/Doom casting. Evans coming back is actually the least unsurprising bit, IMO.

Agreeing with @Brian G. that this feels more like desperation than lack of confidence. But when you look at the past five years and the success ratio of Marvel Studios, you can see why they would feel the "need" to be desperate.

COVID + Bob Chapek + Disney+ kind of was a trifecta of screwing over Marvel Studios, in the result of mismanagement and misdirection as a result of bad moment after bad moment. Pair it with Shang-Chi, Wakanda Forever, Volume 3, MoM, and Deadpool/Wolverine being the only successful films (and Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, Thor, Thunderbolts, and Captain America all floundering, and Eternals being a car fire); it makes it all the clearer that this is a red alarm button moment.

Seen some speculation they might've taken the budget from Avatar 4+5 for the sake of Doomsday and Secret Wars, and I can see it if this is them having to do a "do or die" moment.

lol

Call it what you will the point is Moonknight, Shang Chi and other characters got screwed

I love Ironman 1 but many early MCU films were not the best of the characters and we just need more Cross overs as well so people wanted to learn more

Why was Moon Knight not in Thor 4, a movie about gods? No idea but Dr Strange for no real reason showed up in Thor 3 but it was a good thing because people liked the film and liked strange in it for a moment so they were invested in seeing strange more

Shang Chi should have been in a few films....least of which Captain America 4 would have benefited from the character

Also the MCU ust has the problem now of being like Star Wars and scared many times on just going on in on what makes it great, Captain America 4 was like Disney PG version of Winter Soldier, zero backbone to do anything real but make a fake spy thriller

Anyway in the end this movie I'm sure will be good, it just sucks that Shang Chi, Moonknight and Miss Marvel got screwed because the head of the MCU have no idea any more how to make good films, how to make films connected in exciting ways and sucks nostalgic is going to save the day over setting up Doom as a really good villain

My guess is they are planting the seeds for the young Avengers.

Look, Phases 4 or 5 are plagued by a variety of issues, but many of their problems have nothing to do with the nonsense you listed.

This is just sad, imo. I have literally nothing else to say. MCU, it’s over y’all.

This is probably why the whole point of Secret Wars was to serve as a soft reset for Marvel. Here's hoping they get a fresh start post SW.

There are 37 movies in the MCU - I think the general public is just over it.

The quality needed to stay consistent at a bare minimum or exceed expectations post Endgame to keep a following.

The quantity of content needed to stay the same at a maximum to make it feel special. The moment they decided to do Disney+ shows is when it trended towards becoming a forgettable IP.

The studio originally trained the audience that “everything is connected”, but they made the homework assignment manageable for general audiences by giving them 2-3 movies a year max to follow.

By adding in shows that were “take them or leave them” plus having both the films and shows quality waver and not be very inter-connected, this lack of interest was bound to happen.

Chapek and Feige misread the room. They thought they could replicate what came before but on a larger scale, yet not have their movies and shows intersect much at all for years until a Secret Wars type event. They needed to understand they caught lighting in a bottle with this original game plan. The originality of having all of these solo films play into one another in a mostly cohesive way but be entertaining in their own right is so difficult to pull off for over 20 films in 11 years. It’ll go down as a historical Hollywood moment where being in a Marvel film was like, what the cool actors do.

I think GA attrition was definitely going to happen regardless. But they needed to shake up the status quo to keep the fans more invested and they fumbled that hard.

I’m sure Doomsday and Secret Wars will make all the money because come on, it’s NOSTALGIA. Bringing back the primary Avengers, plus extended universe characters like the X-Men, Deadpool, other Spider-Men, etc.

But to many of your points, it reeks of desperation and a company that needs to squeeze every bit of profit out of sinking ship so shareholders aren’t pissed.

This. The interesting thing isn't that the public is finally moving on from X-Men inspired superhero movies. It's that the phenomenon somehow lasted close to 30 years. Any point in history other than the late 90s/00s, even a 10-year run would've been remarkable. Pop culture is by definition supposed to have a shelf life.

Ya know, if Disney wasn’t so greedy and arrogant thinking they could crap out endless slop on Disney+ and theaters after Endgame, with not much of a plan for the longterm, they wouldn’t be in this position they are now. They only have themselves to blame.
