See, I think OBAA deserves Best Director, but a part of the film kind of mentally felt really *off*? If that is a good way of saying it.

Leo didn't really do his best in comparison to other roles from the past decade, the film tonally played a off-beat filter that didn't quite sit right, and while it deserves the technical credits for the directing, Sinners feels like a stronger package for a more consistent film overall.

I'm gonna give OBAA another shot tonight, but I don't quite feel sold on OBAA winning when I think Sinners justifies itself more.

I usually can’t stand Leo…I think his acting style equates to just doing “more” in an outdated 90’s way. OBAA was my favorite performance of his because he dialed it back so much. He nailed the quieter parts of being a paranoid stoner, and was more realistic to me than Jordan Belfort, Calvin Candie, Hugh Glass, etc.

The off-beat filter was the consistency. That was, to a great extent, the point. It was intentionally surreal.

I think Sinners has a good chance of getting best screenplay (assuming Hamnet does snipe that). And I don’t even think Michael B. Jordan is as sure a lock for Actor as people assume (mostly because I found his performance of both twins to be indecipherable from each other—I was never sure which twin I was seeing at any time).

Hamnet’s in Adapted which One Battle has locked up. There’s really nothing standing in Sinners way for Original since Sentimental Value didn’t pick up a BAFTA win.

Actor is a total crapshoot this year. If Jordan didn’t have SAG, he’d probably be 4th or 5th, but momentum matters during final voting when the race is so fractured.
