Following the blockbuster success of the Wickedfilm adaptation duology, composer Stephen Schwartz and writer Winnie Holzman are returning to the Land of Oz, with a new protagonist in mind.

In an interview with The National, the English-language newspaper of the United Arab Emirates, Schwartz revealed that the pair are currently working on a follow-up film to both The Wizard of Oz and Wicked, centered on Princess Ozma.

Who? Any confidence on this if it’s not based on other source material?

Unfortunately, I imagine they will not adapt this, for the expected reasons.

Without diving into book spoilers, Ozma is a lost queen of Oz, and her return as a “savior” character is referenced throughout the original and Wicked books. She appears plenty in the original books.

Out of Oz Book Spoilers
Within the Wicked franchise, Tip (Ozma’s male side) becomes romantically involved with Rain—Elphaba’s granddaughter. At the end of Out of Oz, the transformation of Tip back in Ozma actually triggers Elphaba’s return and allow her and Glinda to run off together.

Read the article. The same guy who wrote the songs for Wicked (including the new songs) is writing the songs for this.

He wrote the music for the musical Godspell, including the song “Day By Day” which peaked at 13 on the US Billboard charts. He also wrote the music for Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame and Pocahontas. He’s been nominated for six Tony’s.

Dude can write.
