And Universal just continues to improve this park, and reward it for it's excellent attendance (and profit).

Also today marks the opening of dragon quest attraction which had its early premiere last night. Through use of projection mapping, AAs, blow ups (because you actually hit things) and giving you physical weapons to fight, early reactions were great.

Movie theme park Universal Studios Japan in Osaka attracted a record number of visitors in fiscal 2016, with new attractions based on Japanese animation "One Piece" and the "Jurassic Park" film series the main draw, operator USJ Co. said Friday.

The company is projecting total visitors to the amusement park on Osaka's seafront at 14.50 million in the current business year ending this month, topping the previous record of 13.90 million visitors in fiscal 2015 and setting a new high for the third consecutive year.

Shows based on smash-hit manga series "One Piece," which started in July, and a roller coaster associated with the "Jurassic Park" movie series that began operating in March 2016 proved popular, it said.

USJ also attributed the rise in visitors to commemorative events last summer to mark the 15th anniversary of the theme park's opening.

A time-limited attraction based on the role-playing video game "Dragon Quest" also started Friday, with visitors able to battle monsters using weapons from the game.

A new area featuring Nintendo Co. video game characters will open by around 2020. Tokuhei Murata, an executive officer of USJ, said the operator hopes to increase the number of visitors by 2 million to 3 million through this and other projects.

Could this be similar to what we're rumored to be getting, though? Their show incorporates the Black Lake, so ours will obviously be different, but I wonder if ours will implement the same type of backstory involving Dementors.

USJ rewrote visitor record while Tokyo Disney resort saw drop in 2016 | The Japan Times

And the good news won't stop coming for USJ especially knowing they are trending upward while their main rival isn't as much. Also the fact they keep attributing this to new attractions and events bodes well for USJ keeping cool, jump summer, and HHN and may finally make sense to come stateside.

Add in Nintendoland, plus a strong Universal Cool, HHN, and Jump Summer attraction line-up during the olympics. That park will be undefeatable. Plus 2021 being their 2oth anniversary which they went wild for their 15th with huge events (How many parks have one of the biggest music groups perform everyday of the summer for the guests for free).

Also @Yukendoit how'd you enjoy Dragon Quest the Real?

Just for reference, this would make Tokyo Disney the most attended theme park resort outside of the USA, even with the small drop. What's crazy is that USJ is actually the second most attended outside of the USA. Didn't expect that.

whats more impressive is TDL is pulling 30 million with two parks yet USJ is still just one park pulling nearly in the same numbers

USJ reported 14.6M (up from 13.9M)
TDLR reported 30.0M (down 0.6%)

In what Universe is USJ pulling "nearly the same" numbers? Tokyo Disney Sea pulls in nearly the same attendance numbers as USJ and it isn't even the highest attended park at TDL.

Clearly things like Potter have helped a lot and Nintendo will be huge for the park so it has a bright future, but in no way is a singular park pulling the same numbers as TDL. Let's not forget TDL has some big expansions on the way too.

TDLR includes both parks which means if people are park hopping (they do), park attendance is practically the same. Tokyo Disneyland itself doesn't even pull in 30 Million per TEA, they pulled in 16.6 million. With Tokyo DisneySea pulling in 13.6. USJ is in a smaller city yet holding strong with 14.6 million. So yes, USJ is pulling nearly the same numbers when take the two parks and divide the attendance.

Secondly despite every screaming Potter, the biggest factor for the increase per USJ themselves started when they started to do the temporary overlays during COOL. Then add Potter which caused another jump, then add in Nintendo which will add another jump.

You're really stretching. No one said TDL itself brings in 30M. And since when do we take the TEA numbers seriously? Because you like what they have to say?

I guess i'm just confused at what you're trying to say because if USJ had two parks, most people would park hop there too. There is no difference.

How am I stretching? The TEA numbers have to be close to accurate because last time I checked 14.6 million on TEA and USJ Co also saying 14.6 Million came to the park was the same number. USJ is trending upwards and for the past two years TDLR has been trending downwards. If Tokyo Disneyland two parks combined are pulling 30 million, how does that break down. Maybe somewhere close to 15 million each. Or how did TEA break down oh yea. 13.6 and 16.6 which would still be ~30 million combined matching what OLC said as well. If USJ is close to ~15 million than those two are as well ~15 million.

The number USJ pulls is impressive because its not a traditional theme park and has way less tourism/local population to rely on. Each other month there are articles about it breaking attendance and selling more than TDL. This park its not sexy like TDS. People don't see pics of USJ and scream oh my god its so beautiful like TDS or TDL. Almost everything it does in temporary. Every 6 months half the park is different. They can't rely on nostalgia like Disney to keep people coming and they had to work with so many other people to get properties in their park. TDS and USJ both had their 15th anniversary yet one grew while the other fell. I'm sorry you don't find that impressive for a park smaller than USF.

The park hopping aspect was to show that most that TDLR hit their ceiling. That the traditional theme park model isn't working for them. Yea they have the Nemo overlay coming out this year at TDLR , they had special shows, and all these things for the 15th anniversary at TDLR but it meant little. That substance is more important than brand.

I never said it wasn't impressive, but your argument that it's more impressive than TDL is without merit considering that it has yet to pass TDL in attendance and is barely ahead of TDS.

Just because TDL has two parks does not make the numbers mean less. You said most people park hop so that takes away from the meaning of the 30M. If USJ had room for two parks, would they not park hop there simply because it's Universal?

Because you can't tell if someone is spending a full day in the park or just flip flopping between both parks. Also if USJ had two parks people wouldn't park hop as USJ doesn't even allow re-entry into their one park unless you have an annual pass.

I see it as okay, if people are switching between parks why? Both TDLR parks are bigger (not by much but still) and can handle way more capacity than USJ but they also have more attractions. In the end, attendance for TDLR with the park hopping should be much higher than it currently is.

This is one of the stupider disagreements i've ever been involved in on these forums.

14.6M ≠ 30M. I don't care if TDL has two parks, there's no way you can claim that is "nearly the same". As you said, you can't tell how many people are there for a full day and who is park hopping. The vast majority of guests don't park hop no matter the park all over the world. TDL and TDS have enough to do to fill out 4 days easily.

Why does everything have to be a competition though is my larger question? Can't we just be a fan of theme parks? USJ is performing great and TDL is easily the best Disney resort. Both have lots of expansion coming. Let's enjoy the great things the parks have to offer instead of always diluting it into a battle of "who's got better numbers".
