Looks like it has a ton of personality, charm, way more features than I expected (positive!) and what they've teased of the soundtrack is friggin' killer. All in all it makes me wanna' snag a Switch 2 for this, this looks like one heck of a game!

I just had an absolutely crazy idea of who’s developing Donkey Kong Bananza.

Because of leaks we know a game was cancelled at Nintendo that was supposed to involve singing as a core mechanic. We also know this game included bigger characters that helped in combat with the female protagonist. We know Nintendo has a mantra of not letting good ideas die.

What if the studio that made this cancelled game changed it around so that it was no longer a completely original IP, but instead now starred a character they previously worked with to great success. This cancelled game was called Harmony and was cancelled in 2017. It was in development at Retro Studios. The reason it’s taken so long for them to release something is because this is the game they’ve been working on and just like the devs of Mario Kart World they realized they just couldn’t realize their vision for this game on the original Switch at some point. They were then handed Metroid Prime 4 in 2019 so that also extended things a bit. It’s also entirely possible that Bananza is a joint venture with the 3D Mario team which is why its art looks so reminiscent of Mario Odyssey.

I think I’ve cracked it.

Eurogamer is reporting this afternoon what we all suspected all along and that’s that the upcoming epic Donkey Kong Bananza was developed by the development team behind the sublime Super Mario Odyssey.

I personally subscribe to the rumor that this is a smaller spun-off portion of the Odyssey development crew, and the larger portion of the team is still working on 3D Mario to release in a year or two. That makes a lot of sense to me, and the person who said it originally apparently is pretty reputable.
