Alan Rickman was one of the greatest actors of all time so very hard act to follow.

Pappa is a great actor. Interested to see how this turns out.

John Lithgow is a very solid choice imo, only negative I can think of is he isn't British.

My concern is that he'll be 80 this year. And they are talking about possibly 10 seasons. Even if they cut it to 7, it's still pushing it.

I just think he's such a weird and bizarre choice for this role. He's not even British! And like @fryoj said... he's going to be 80 this year. So idk. I won't be watching this show anyway I just find this so weird.

Love the actor but...rather him be British and you;d think they would have learned not to hire older men for a 7-10 year role

Yeah among other things I would really rather not have John Lithgow, legendary star of stage and screen, spend what could be the last ten years of his life being Dumbledore in a second-string remake.

That's just such a bad choice for the reasons outlined above. I find it very difficult to believe they'll be able to churn out a season each year since no major show has been able to accomplish that this decade.

I'd say a lot of it being the same sets year to year will help. They can be continuously filming as well. It's not like you have to wait till a season is complete to see if there will be a next one and there shouldn't be much waiting on writers.

And, I admit I don't watch network tv any more, but don't they still have shows that have weekly episodes that have new seasons every year?

This series is much larger in scope and generally complex than a medical procedural or family sitcom, which are the (increasingly rare) types of shows that reliably deliver a season a year. The effects alone will require a lengthy runway, and you're underestimating the amount of writing that will need to be done. A better comp is something like HBO's own Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, which... has massive, year+ breaks between seasons.

It's a valid concern.

Even Lithgow thinks they're going to be able to film the ENTIRE series in under 10 years!
I just can't see it. SEVEN seasons in SEVEN years. That's just A LOT.

Lithgow is quoted as saying, "I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party," and i was like "Dude, nah - you'll be in the ground!" (sadly).

Unlike GoT the story is complete. So while there will be a lot of writing to do for the series the main plot line is complete, and there's a whole bunch world building/lore that's been added since the first time the books were released. Not to be dismissive of the creative process, but there is a decent amount of plug and play because they're not having to spend time on figuring some things out because it's not created from scratch.

If they can get get a decent lead time in preproduction a number of things can be done on a decent schedule. I don't think it'll be as fast as they seem to imply though—a year and a half sounds plausible.

A more apt comparison would probably be Percy Jackson, which is looking at a 2-year gap between the first two seasons.

Granted, the writer's strike probably prevented them from getting a head start during post-production on the first. But I agree with Clive that the visual effects will be the biggest holdup. Especially since the VFX sector is already getting overworked to exhaustion.
